I find the quality of Sylvan's plants to be excellent. I bought a Janet Blair rhododendron from Lowe's and the same plant from Sylvan's for about the same price. The Lowe's plant withered for a few years and died while the Sylvan plant thrived. I am never going to buy another plant from a Big Box store; I go to Sylvan's to get my larger plants since they are so much more healthy. read more

I went here at 8am on a Saturday with high expectations from friends and family claiming how great this place is. My mom and I were both extremely disappointed. The location is already a hike for us, and not an easy drive, then add how unorganized they were! The "check-in" person circled a very confusing map, then sent us on our way. We were not comfortable asking for help as she was extremely condescending and rude the first time around. She rolled her eyes at legitimate questions as if we should already know the answers.. since ya know.. she isn't actually there to work.... We found our first tree with ease (at a price that shocked us $$$$), but the 2nd and 3rd kind were still not found after over an hour of turning tags and checking the names she said to look for. THEN after giving up on those we went to look at flowers and were left wanting more, again. We couldn't find black eyed suzies despite waling up and down every perennial aisle. We will not be going back, as we found a different nursery that was not only easier to get to, more easily navigated with more pleasant employees, they ALSO had much more reasonable pricing. For the price she'd have paid for one oak tree there she was able to get an oak and a weeping cherry. If I could give it less than the one star I would. read more

Sylvan Nursery - Huge let down. - Nurseries & Gardening Near Me - Westport, Massachusetts

We built a new home and purchased over $3,000 worth of plants from Sylvan Nursery. Unfortunately, about 1/3 of them died. The plants were handpicked by Sylvan and planted by a professional company. All the plantings were installed in May and were perfect through the Fall and Winter. However, by spring, many were dead. In one area, we planted 8 zebra grass plants, but only one came back. In total, we lost approximately 15 plants. We emailed Sylvan and sent photos of the plants along with our invoice, but there was no response. We called a few days later and spoke with the person who took our original order, and we were told there was nothing they could do. This company may have a lot of stock to choose from, but they do not stand by their product. You get a better guarantee buying plants from Home Depot or Lowe's. If you are a homeowner, I would strongly advise against purchasing from Sylvan Nursery in Westport, MA. read more

Huge selection and excellent quality plants-- trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals. Well organized yard and system EXCEPT the check process is inefficient and cumbersome. We didn't so much mind waiting in line to check in and then again to pay but it took a very long time (at least 45 minutes) for them to go pick up the plants that we had tagged and left near the beds, as instructed. They do not want customers to bring items to the the office with, even though we were buying only two perennials in one gallon containers each. read more

This is our third visit to this place... between all 3 visits, we spent approximately $2,000 in plants. Although they have a lot of different plants, shrubs and trees, the customer service from the ladies in the office, leaves a lot to be desired. I understand a bad day, but as I mentioned, this was our third visit and, during all 3 visits they were rude, condescending and less than polite. They offer the service of a "consultant" to answer any questions you might have, and when you do ask a question to any of them, they make you feel like you are ignorant and a bother to them. I gave this place 3 chances, we had 3 unpleasant experiences. Today's lady, with an extremely arrogant attitude, was in her mid to late 60s, had a brown hair bob and wore bangs. I will end by saying that we did ask a question to a very pleasant male worker who was out on the grounds gathering plants, and although he couldn't answer our specific question, he went out of his way to find us help in a very contrasting way than his office colleagues. They are not the only place which sells nice plants in this area ..... we will not be returning. read more

This is THE place for trees, shrubs, and perennials. I understand the frustration of people who gave Sylvan low ratings. No one told them how Sylvan works before they arrived. Overwhelming. Seems geared more to landscapers than homeowners who shop for trees and shrubs only occasionally. It's huge and hard to find things. No one around to answer questions. I also found the trees were too big for me to fit into my car. I went to a more consumer-oriented nursery (Russell's) and got exactly what I wanted. read more

Beautiful place. I wish I had come when I had more time and earlier in the season to explore. I purchased a blueberry bush. They had a large selection and large variety of plants. Even this late in season (mid-August) it was obvious their plants had been well cared for. The sales staff was extremely helpful and knowledge about their plants; how to plant and care for them. They also provided me with written instructions. I plan to check them out again next spring to see all that they have to offer. I have been looking for blueberry plants for a few weeks and by far this place had the most choices and healthiest looking plants and most helpful staff. read more

This place has a great selection of trees and shrubs--unrivaled in the area. It is, however, overpriced and the staff seems to actively seek out how to be as unhelpful as possible. The ladies behind the desk are brutal. So if you have a lot of money and self respect to burn through in the pursuit of a great Himalayan birch tree... check this place out, you'll love it. I go to Sylvan sometimes because they have species not easily found elsewhere. I give them 2 stars, not 1, because of the selection of rare items. This is a business that is decidedly unfriendly. Even to wholesalers like myself. I was treated horribly initially since they didn't believe I was a legitimate business. Not much better once they saw I was a true business...They also carry NO refunds or guarantees on anything unless you pay full retail. This is OK if you're a wholesaler that transmits a specimen loss cost over to the customer. I find it awkward to be nicer to the company employees than the other way around. I'm using them less and less and getting my wholesale discount at other places I found. I hope they're listening to these posts...maybe they don't care. I agree with the other negative posts...ALSO, their prices are outrageous on many items. Best to go to nurseries during sales for you retailers out there. You'll be happier. read more
