We've tried so many group swim classes over the years at various rec centers, and nothing really stuck--until we found Ms. Carol. In just five consecutive days, my kids made more progress than they've made in years! My son went from plugging his nose just to go underwater to gliding confidently and even jumping off the diving board -- no floaties and no nose plugging! My daughter Olivia mastered gliding and incorporated arms for the freestyle. It was amazing to watch. Ms. Carol is incredibly encouraging and skilled. She teaches out of her own heated pool, and her approach is direct and effective. She's the best swim teacher around. We loved learning to swim with Ms Carole! When I stopped by to meet her she was very up front with me about her philosophies and passion on learning to swim as well as expected behavior from her students. My daughter had taken a few other swim lessons elsewhere so she was very comfortable in the water and going under. I think this was a large contributing factor to our swim success as Ms Carole did not need to spend that time trying to get her comfortable with going under - and we could focus more on honing her skillset. One call out for new parents is that we are asked to leave the lesson. I hung out in the driveway and could still hear everything during the lesson. My recommendation would be if you have a child who is always looking to you for direction - its best to leave so they can focus on what Ms Carole is saying instead. You can always check out the last 5 minutes of the lesson - but I found it helpful to remove myself from distractions. We were really pleased with the progress we made over the summer and my 4 y/o daughter can successfully jump in the water and make it back to the edge from the deep-end. read more

We had an absolutely horrific experience utilizing Carole. I feel it's important for parents looking to entrust the safety of their children learning a life-long necessary skill to be warned about her abhorrent instruction style and unethical business practices. When my husband contacted Carole about putting our daughter in her program, they spent time on the phone, discussing my daughter's anxieties and fears around swimming. We'd been to several corporate swim schools with little luck, and Carol assured us that she could teach our daughter to swim in two weeks. Additionally, Carole expressed strong feelings about the kinds of swim schools we had used and stated that none of them know what they are doing. She even went so far as to say that 'many' of the instructors from these places seek her out to learn how to adequately teach children how to swim. Her testimony was compelling, and even though the drive to her home, where lessons take place, was over 30 minutes for us, we were committed to trusting her and trying her program. Carole did share with my husband that the 'only rule' she had was that there was to be no crying in swim lessons. We had already expressed that our daughter is both highly sensitive and has an anxiety disorder, but we told her we would be supportive and work with our daughter to attempt to make her feel safe, even though she did not know Carole and that this would be a brand-new experience for her. Additionally, Carole expressed that she understood how to work with a child like ours. My husband told Carole that our daughter still didn't know how to blow bubbles in the water in order to put her head underneath, and Carole assured him she would teach that skill. We were explicit about her abilities including that she didn't know how to go underwater without plugging her nose. We visited Carole's program two days prior to our anticipated start date. When we met Carole, she was scattered and disorganized, and did not remember the day and time we were supposed to start lessons with her. She had no problem, however, asking for payment in full prior to even having a conversation about whether working with her was a good fit. She expressed how full her program is, alluding to the idea that if we didn't pay that day, we would lose our spot. She does not have a single form that states her policies, including that she does not allow refunds. Additionally, when she met our daughter, she immediately grabbed her with a hand on each side of her head and gave her a large kiss on the forehead. This was alarming since we had met her only seconds before, and we had already told her about our daughter's temperament and unwelcomed physical touch like this is highly alarming. Upon the first lesson, Carole had forgotten who we were when we arrived, even though we had just met her two days prior and gave her a payment by check in full. She was asking me and all the parents present if they could change their days and times of their children's lessons, as she had overbooked herself. We worked these lessons around our jobs, so there was no way I could make that change. Upon starting the lesson, Carole neither assessed our daughter's swim level, nor did she provide any form of trust or safety as a brand-new instructor. She immediately instructed my daughter to go to the bottom of the pool and sit. Our daughter immediately panicked, as she still needed to learn how to blow bubbles before going to the bottom of the pool. We had already shared this information. Naturally, our daughter started crying and looked absolutely terrified. She told Carole this, and said over and over how scared she was and that she didn't know how to do what was being asked of her. Rather than pulling our daughter aside to teach that skill, Carole grabbed our daughter aggressively and started yelling in her face that crying was not allowed. When my daughter continued to share her fears, Carole told her that she was just whining, and that she absolutely could blow bubbles and that it was 'easy.' This behavior only made our daughter more anxious (as being told not to feel something, as with any human being, -- child or adult NEVER works). Carol proceeded to spend the entirety of the lesson (with other children in attendance) berating and demeaning our young daughter. Her behavior was so egregious, unacceptable, and inappropriate that I immediately knew we could not return the following day. When my husband contacted Carole to discuss what happened, Carole responded flippantly with, 'Well, I am not for everyone.' She made no attempt to understand the needs of our child, nor was she remotely accountable or apologetic for the way she treated our daughter. When my husband asked about getting a refund, as clearly this was not going to be a good fit, Carole refused and said she doesn't offer refunds. I have never seen such horrible business practices, and I hope her dangerous and unethical program is put out of business. read more

Our daughter has been going to Ms. Carole for the past 4 years and our son has been going for the past 2 years. Prior to Ms. Carole, our daughter had attended multiple swim sessions at another swim school with little to no progress because she was terrified of water and the teachers never pushed her. Ms. Carole is the type of teacher my daughter needed. She pushed her out of her comfort zone (against the will of my daughter) but made so much progress with her in the two weeks we were with her for the first year. She pushes all her students to be their best and celebrates their accomplishments. My daughter is now swimming laps and comfortable in any pool, even in the deep end. I know my son will be just as strong a swimmer too as we continue lessons for him with Ms. Carole. We would recommend Ms. Carole to anyone, especially those with kids that would otherwise refuse to get in the pool/get their faces wet. Horrible experience all around. I placed my 4 year old in Ms. Carole's swim class. Day 1 (Monday) was apparent my child was not ready and was scared and unwilling to put her face in the water. She began screaming and crying which resulted her getting kicked out of the pool. I was made aware ahead of time that Ms. Carole does not tolerate crying and screaming which I definitely understand her rule, however her lack of communication with me left me feeling unsure if we were able to come back since she made it so clear she does not work with screaming. I called her Tuesday morning and she spoke with me about parenting and told me that I needed to be firm with my child and let her know who the boss was and we would try again that day at 4pm. After driving 40 minutes one way we arrive to find class was cancelled due to pending rain. Her excuse for not texting me to let me know that class was cancelled was because she said she doesn't put kids on the schedule until she receives payment in full....I calmly stated that we had given her a check for the full amount the day before along with our registration form. She apologized and asked us to try again the next day. Well Wednesday did not go any better for my child, (Who Carole called the wrong name the entire class) she was scared to put her face in the water and after a while began crying and screaming which again resulted in her getting picked up by Ms. Carole and kicked out of the pool. I let Carole know that I was going to pause sending my child until Monday the following week as I felt that taking a break and going to the pool with her mom and dad over the weekend would help her feel more comfortable in the water. Over The weekend we learned that our child is just not ready for swimming yet so we decided to hold off until she's ready so that way we don't force her and traumatize her and result in her resisting swim lessons in the future. When I let Carole know of this plan, I asked her if she hadn't cashed our check yet if she would hold off and I would pay her for the registration fee + the price of the 2 classes we attended. She told me she would not do that and cashed the check. I reached out again and asked her to kindly reconsider refunding us for the unused classes and she said she does not offer refunds. My only choice was basically to drive 40 minutes each way to swim lessons every day that my child hates and watch her scream and get kicked out day after day?? Not happening. What frustrates me most is that a NO WHERE on her website or in the interview phone call OR registration form does she state she doesn't offer refunds on classes not used. This is just bad business and a horrible person. Maybe collecting parent's unused paid swim classes is how she offers free classes to kids whose parents can't afford lessons. Not sure but I have nothing kind to say about this experience and I hope parents consider this if they have a child who is genuinely scared of the water. read more
