The place is quite small but charming and eclectic. I wanted to sit down and stay awhile but 4 people were hogging a space that could have sat 10, which was half the available area. Why do people do this?? Anyhow... I stood at the counter and chatted up the owner about the local coffee industry while he was busy making all the drinks ahead of mine - great guy and I'm sorry I didn't get his name. By the time I got my drink, the one and only 2 seat sidewalk table had opened up, which was a good thing since he made my cortado in a ceramic cup. I sat outside and waved at strangers passing while sipping a perfectly crafted beverage with beans roasted by Rochester Coffee. Hopefully next time I visit, I can find an interior seat and continue our conversation and enjoy the art and the vibe.

I ordered and paid for my cortado and grabbed a seat at the bar so I could people watch, and on a Friday morning there is plenty of movement to keep you entertained. The space has a steady hum of locals, tourists and market wanderers all blending together, which makes it an easy place to settle in for a few minutes as the day really starts up. The coffee arrived looking more like a flat white than a cortado, but it was rich, tasty and definitely a darker roast without the burned flavor you get from the Green Siren people. It was a solid cup (technically, paper), warm and comforting, paired nicely with a half hour of casual voyeurism as the market spun up around me. Once the cup was empty and the morning scene had played itself out to my satisfaction, I headed down the hill to view the Steamboat feeling that the detour had been worth it. I was a bit confused when I arrived at the address because there was a church in that location, but I soon saw the signboard on the sidewalk wit Brew Haha's name. I cautiously entered and found they have set up a space in the church's lobby. I ordered my new favorite beverage - an iced Strawberry Matcha and enjoyed it on site. The space is pleasant with comfortable seating, tables for working and an outdoor sidewalk deck. Although I was never approached about my religious beliefs - or lack of...it just felt odd to be in an environment where religious signage is on display and pamphlets and artwork are prevalent on the walk to the restroom. I'm sure it's a nice perk to have a coffee shop on site for the congregation and a built in customer base for Brew Haha, but that environment is not my cup of tea or matcha.

So the reviews that act surprised or give lower ratings for that reason are silly gooses. The ambiance is outstanding! It is a whole vibe. You are surrounded by books, some of the tables have pew seating, there is a kids area, they sell T shirts cheap ($7) and used books at an amazing deal. New books are priced as marked with regular retail pricing. I was shocked at the number if new hooks they had. The crowning jewel for me was they have natural house made (or local bought) syrups so you are not getting a run of the mill commercially based anything. I expected that to limit their menu but it didn't! I had the caramel crunch chai, hands down best chai I have ever tasted. I wanted to chug it. My friend loved her drink that had winter mint! When asked about their source for coffee beans, I was told "we get em from someplace in Arkansas". OK!?? Their first Yelp review was in 2008, but Bridget's review from last week mentions their new paint job, so I assume that's what drew my attention today. It does look vibrant from the exterior and stands out on a fairly rundown block although the interior could use a facelift also. The space is huge with multiple display cases for pastries, breads, cookies and cakes. Several coolers for cold drinks and a small coffee station. I took a few treats to go, since there is not seating available. My chocolate filled churro was delicious and my wife enjoyed her cupcakeish treat. I was disappointed that they did not have my favorite Mexican dessert available - Tres Leches Cake. Maybe next time.
