McKie Recreation Center - Weight room 2021

    McKie Recreation Center

So far so good! It's 2021 and we're slowly recovering from the panorama (yes, panorama lol). Inside…read moredining, theaters, and gyms are opening back up. The McKie Rec Center is no different. I recently moved into the area and heard about the weight room. I paid for a 3 month membership, which was $45 dollars. I believe this includes access to all Cincy rec centers but will need to test that out. The 45 bucks gives me access to the basketball court and the weight room. COVID SAFETY: For now, you have to call and schedule a time to go into either facility. They are keeping the number of people very low so I appreciate that since the weight room is fairly small. You must call and book a time on the hour for the hour. My only complaint is there isn't an online portal or email I can send, I have to call, and if you know me - I HATE calling anyone haha! Oh well. It's a great alternative for me when I'm not feeling like running outside. It's walking distance and opens up at 8am so I can get my morning burn before the day starts. Glad to have it available!

I think the Cinci Recreation Commission facilities are a great benefit to the city and fully…read moresupport their inclusion in the city budget, etc. Unfortunately there are a lot of things competing for the same funds, and certain communities draw the short straw. And, unfortunately, McKie suffers from that. Most of the equipment is old and beat up, but in working order. They are not open weekends, but they are open late enough on weekdays to get in a workout after work. McKie also lacks a few amenities that some of the better funded CRC centers have such as a running track. Now, those are a few of the negatives to get out of the way, and unfortunately they are things the folks at McKie just can't do anything about. Now, the good things. First off the people are really great. Everyone is very friendly, and not because they are looking at you like a walking commission. I have seen people being trained there, but I'm not sure how that is set up, definitely not in a high-pressure way. They have classes in martial arts and I think I've seen some women walking around with yoga mats. And the other big tradeoff for the gently used equipment is that an adult membership is only $25 a YEAR!! A main charge for the center seems to be the programs for area youth. I know there are regular and structured basketball times, and I've seen younger children occupying the front room doing arts and crafts projects. Also, in the summer, McKie hosts a number of day camp activities as well as swimming lessons. The front room also hosts community organizations such as the Community Council and acts as a jumping off point for things like the Great American Cleanup. So, as I mentioned, the CRC community centers are asked to do so many worthwhile things, and do them on a shoestring budget. The only reason I give this a 3 star review here is because if it had a bigger budget, I need room to go to 4 or 5.

My only real gripe is the pre-class experience. I am used to getting to a yoga studio early to set…read moreup my mat and just take the time to center myself. With this studio, the teacher often arrives just a few moments before class is set to begin. I was not previously warned of this, so I had arranged time to get there early just to sit around and wait. Once the class actually started, I thoroughly enjoyed Amber's teaching style. It is hard not to love her passion towards the Rocket system. Well, it is hard not to love the Rocket! It is a genuinely fun practice. I left with my spirit feeling lighter and like I had worked every muscle in my body. I will say that the Rocket is probably best suited for someone who already has yoga experience under their belt. I would recommend taking a beginner's class or getting some general Ashtanga classes to get an idea on alignment and whatnot.

I can't believe I'm the first one to Yelp this place. I'm afraid I won't do it justice!…read more Previous to entering the Yoga Ah studio, I had taken 1.5 yoga classes in my life. Yoga was too -- still for me. I ran x-country and swam in high school, went to Nationals twice with the ultimate frisbee team in college, gave a girl a bloody nose in a white-collar boxing match, played tennis, snowboarded, surfed, etc. but could never get into yoga. Then I started my OB/Gyn residency. I started getting white hairs, my blood pressure rose exponentially, I was exhausted but couldn't sleep and my weight yo-yo'd like never before in my life. The choice came down to finding a shrink or trying some yoga. Thank God I did the latter first. Not that there is anything wrong with shrinks. I may still need one of those. But for now, I have re-gained some control of myself through my practice of yoga. Now, more about the studio. It's on the second floor of the building that use to house Slim's. It's a small and modest studio which can feel luxurious when there's only five of us or cozy when there's 15 of us. Any more than 15 feels slightly cramped, but still doable. There are orchids in bloom all over the studio and the sweet but never overpowering smell of incense. And it's warm, so warm -- especially nice during those harsh winter days. In the corner there are yoga mats to share in case you don't have one or forgot yours. And there are little cubbies and hooks for your shoes, bags and jackets. Very cute. The teachers. Amber is the one who originally started the studio and her and D probably teach most of the classes. They are very different teachers but both are very good. One caveat -- I've never seriously taken yoga any where else so I just may not know any better but I can't imagine better yoga instructors than the two of them. And Amber is so great about making sure every new comer feels welcomed. I was nervous my first few times but I totally melted under her smile. They also apparently have this great teacher training program but I'll let some one else who has more experience with that talk about it! I also love the other people in the class. Everyone is very friendly and so welcoming. It's unbelievable. And the same people keep coming back week after week so it's fun to see them again. And it's also fun to watch them progress and work with their energy. It truly is a community. Rocket yoga. Developed by Larry Schultz in the 1980's. But again, I've never known any other so I'll let someone more knowledgeable expand upon it. But I think it's amazing. The changes I've seen in my body over the last few months have truly made me appreciate my yoga mat. But even more importantly, some of my attitudes and my perspectives have also softened and relaxed which have made my life much more manageable. All in all, Yoga Ah has been a much-needed addition to my life. I am grateful for having stumbled upon it. Practice, all is coming. Namaste.
