Wow, this was a nice surprise. My friends live near Waterlooplein Metro station, and De Hapjeshoek…read moreis one of their go-to takeout places. If you didn't know it was there, you would definitely miss it. Plus, you would never think a joint in a subway station complex is any good, but this is a real hidden gem. Suriname is a former Dutch colony in South America. Consequently, there are a number of Surinamese restaurants in Amsterdam, but this takeout stands OUT. The overhead menu sign is all in Dutch, and so are the few items marked in the butcher/bakery-like display counters. Most dishes are not identified. I had no idea what to get so friends did the ordering. After we ordered I noticed a QR-code for the English menu. Whatever I ate, and we had at least 6 dishes, they were hearty, spicy and bursting with flavor. You probably can't go wrong trying several items. Don't forget shrimp chips. If you aren't doing takeout, there are a few cafeteria tables to sit and eat. Don't miss this place!

The only dish that was not a stand out was the Samosa. Highly recommend the Bakje Bami, Nasi (stir fried noodles with a wonderful and unusual sauce) and the Kip Ketjap (chicken in sweet soy). I want more of this, and will have to return to beautiful Amsterdam soon!

The windows are big and it feels like when you eating in a cozy living room. There is also a terrace where you can have you dinner outside. For only 35 euro's you can choose your own 3-courses dinner! The kitchen is French, but also have some Spanish and Asian influences. Next to the organic meat and fish, there are also delicious oysters as an appetizer, vetarian dishes and also incredible desserts which you definately cannot skip! For example the chocolate dessert which comes with 3 different chocolatemousse!

The front is a busy bar which had a hip crowd, a nice selection of gin (which I unfortunately food not sample). In the back there are tables providing an atmosphere more suited for conversation. Service was fast and attentive, and gave us a table for one hour (since we had not made any reservation). This was no problem since since and food came promptly. Food was reasonable in price and great tasting, although some would find the portions small. I found them just right. Get some home made French fries on the side if you are hungry. At the end the single espresso was really good. Recommended.

I came here with a few friends to try some Surinamese food in Amsterdam, as I heard it is one of…read morethe most well integrated cuisines in the Netherlands. Having never had it before, I was pleasantly surprised to see how many different parts of Asia seemed to influence this cuisine, especially given that Suriname is a South American country! There is satay, nasi goreng, goat curry, etc - stuff inspired from all over Asia but slightly different than you would get in their original countries. I ordered the chicken Longtong which is an Indonesian dish and a specialty of this place. It was OUTSTANDING and really filled me up too. I did not expect that especially given how nice and cheap it was - I had even ordered an extra side of Satay skewers which I then had to share. Service is nice and quick especially since you mostly just interact at the back stand to order, and then sit down. It was a bit crowded inside but the vibe is nice and we were able to get a table without waiting too much. One minor note is that our cards were not accepted here (visa, Mastercard), so make sure you bring cash! They did a good job of communicating this before we ordered so we did not have to waste too much time, and luckily we had just enough cash anyway. Overall, very solid recommendation for Amsterdam! Surinamese food is not to be missed.

We komen hier zeker terug!
