When I saw PA Bakery advertising mini King Cakes for Mardi Gras, I was genuinely thrilled. A…read morereasonably sized King Cake felt like a dream come true -- all the fun of the tradition without committing to feeding an entire village. I immediately pre-ordered two mini King Cakes at $5.50 each (total $11), already imagining the moment I'd get to gloat when I found the hidden baby! The mini King Cakes were actually quite generous in size. Easily enough for 3-4 people...although I personally demolished mine in one sitting and have zero regrets. Now for the part that caught me off guard. The plastic baby -- arguably the entire point of a traditional King Cake -- was perched on top instead of hidden inside. I was fully anticipating that moment of excitement that comes from discovering the baby mid-bite, because that's kind of the magic of a King Cake tradition. Without that element, what I ended up with felt more like a very festive brioche-style cinnamon roll wearing Mardi Gras colors than a King Cake. To be clear, it tasted good. The cake itself was soft without being dry, had plenty of cinnamon-esque filling without tipping into overly gooey territory, and was generously finished with frosting and sugary crystals. Flavor-wise, no complaints. But if you're marketing something specifically as a King Cake, the expectation is that the baby is hidden within. Otherwise, it changes the experience entirely. For food safety purposes, there are plenty of creative alternatives -- an edible marzipan baby, a clearly oversized non-choking-hazard version, sticker on the box, etc. -- but the surprise element is part of what makes a King Cake a King Cake. Overall, not a bad experience -- just not quite the Mardi Gras moment I was hoping for. Next year, I'll probably seek out a bakery that leans into the full King Cake tradition...because if I'm chasing the thrill of finding a tiny plastic baby in my dessert, I want to earn that victory properly. If the baby isn't going in the cake, just let me know up front so I can manage my expectations (and my Mardi Gras excitement) accordingly.

Picture this: it's a mid-May Sunday afternoon, I'm headed home after an absolutely elite adventure…read moreday, and my adventure buddy casually asks, "Hey, do you like macarons?" Excuse me? Of COURSE I like macarons. Don't be ridiculous. And just like that, an unexpected side quest to Sweet Velvet Macarons was born! I had absolutely no idea this place even existed. Tucked into a suite on the backside of a multi-story building, Sweet Velvet Macarons feels a little bit like finding a secret dessert portal hidden in plain sight. And let me tell you, it is WELL worth finding! Their Sunday hours until 5pm made it the perfect stop to squeeze one more sweet little adventure into the day before heading home. The moment we walked in, I was blown away. I genuinely don't think I've ever seen that many macarons in one place before in my life. The space itself was bright, cheerful, smelled like pure sugar happiness, and the staff were incredibly friendly and excited to help first-timers navigate the overwhelming amount of deliciousness. Now here's the detail that absolutely won me over immediately: every visit comes with a FREE sample macaron! This is both generous and emotionally dangerous because narrowing down one sample flavor when staring at that display case felt like being asked to pick a favorite child. They had classic flavors, rotating seasonal flavors, double-stuffed flavors...my brain nearly short-circuited trying to decide. Eventually, I settled on the Double-Stuffed Blueberry Maple Pancake macaron to officially pop my Sweet Velvet Macarons cherry. And OH. MY. GOD. This thing was incredible! The shell itself had that perfect macaron texture, slightly crisp and sticky on the outside while staying soft and airy inside. But the real star was the filling. Sweet Velvet does NOT play games with filling quantity and I deeply respect that! The double-stuffed center was creamy, rich, super flavorful, and honestly one of the best macaron fillings I've ever had. As someone who generally prefers frosting-to-cake ratios approaching complete imbalance, this absolutely spoke to my soul. Naturally, there was no way I was leaving empty-handed after that experience. I grabbed two more macarons to bring home and continue the flavor adventure later: the Lemon Bar and the NY Strawberry Cheesecake. They packaged them carefully into the cutest little transport box imaginable and the total came to only $5.50, which honestly felt super reasonable for specialty desserts this good. Both flavors were fantastic, though the Lemon Bar edged out the Strawberry Cheesecake slightly for me thanks to the powdered sugar coating that made it taste even more like an actual lemon bar in macaron form. Overall, this place was such a fun surprise! Amazing flavors, friendly staff, adorable presentation, and genuinely outstanding macarons. Now that I know Sweet Velvet Macarons exists, this little hidden sugar sanctuary has absolutely been added to my return list.

The reason for the 3 stars is as follows: The pancake batter has too much baking soda. I got a taste without the Nutella and strawberry and I could taste the bitter baking soda in the background. I couldn't finish eating the mini pancakes. I was disappointed that they lacked that delicious Mexican vanilla flavor in the batter. I hope that they consider adding it and scale back on baking soda. I ordered two waffle sticks with dulce de leche and marzipan and strawberries. The sticks are about 4" long and 1.3" wide, each is $5.75 not worth the price. Ordered a Mexican hot dog and that was the best dog I've had in a while. It was a fair price for the size and toppings that comes with it. I'm not much for jalapeños but eaten all together it was amazing and not too spicy. It was like a pickle with a kick! This location was easy to find but the parking lot was mostly filled since there are a lot of other happening businesses on this strip mall. Yum Yum has a soft colored decore and it was very clean. Hope they make those small changes to the batter so I can go try those mini pancakes again, and give more stars.

Second visit in a month. Third flavor tried. That should tell you everything…read more This time we went for the Strawberry Cheesecake Swirl Bundtlet ($6.75) -- classic white cake filled with creamy cheesecake, swirled and drizzled with real strawberry glaze, and topped with their signature cream cheese frosting. Moist, rich, and just sweet enough without tipping into sugar overload. We shared one for dessert, and it was the perfect size for two people who want to feel slightly virtuous about splitting dessert (don't worry, we still scraped the frosting off the container). The shop is tucked into a quiet strip mall but strategically placed near Capital City Mall, Trader Joe's, and more -- meaning it's almost too easy to "accidentally" stop in. Flavors change weekly, so there's always something new to try. We've had three now and still can't pick a favorite because they've all been stellar. Friendly staff, dangerously good cake, and a raffle for free Bundts (yes, we dropped our business cards in). We'll be back... probably every week.
