After reading the positive reviews about Sweetland we were inspired to add them to our list of orchards to visit. Unfortunately our experience was not what we expected. We had done our Yelpsearch about Sweetland ahead of time. We also checked their website and Facebook page. We made reservations a few weeks ahead of time as requested and were excited to make the trip to visit. The night before we had planned to make our trip, kudos to my wife for rechecking, we noticed they had changed their hours and would not be open. The good news is this saved us an hour drive for nothing. The unfortunate part is even though we had made a reservation on line, we received no notice about the change of hours. We did send an email to confirm their change of hours and thank you to the owners as they did reply to confirm the change. This change did not work for our schedule so we were not able to visit when we had planned. A few weeks later we thought we would try again. We made the trip south. Its a nice drive and as we turned down the road to the orchard we were greeted by a long line of parked cars. This was as busy of an orchard as we have been to. Considering they are outside of the metro area, this could be a good sign. We parked and made the walk into their orchard. No question this was the most scenic orchard we have been to. Not very large but a comfortable feeling. If you had a reservation for their tasting kits you were directed to one area. If you were just there to shop, you were directed to a different line. The lines led to a barn opening where the kits were handed out and where you could do your shopping. Personally we like to be able to go into a little shop to see the apples, cider and other goodies however it was a very nice fall day so we didn't mind standing in line outside. They don't have a lot of extra goodies. They have apples, cider, hard cider, then local some local cheese and meats. Sounds like they also had apple doughnuts however when it was our turn to purchase they were out of doughnuts. While we were disappointed, it turned out better that way. The young man that helped us picked out our apples and cider for us. He was helpful and friendly however again it would have been nice to do this ourselves. The apples were decent sized and good. The cider is probably the best cider we have had. Very fresh and flavorful. The hard cider was also good and refreshing. Overall a good experience. Could have been worse had we made the trip and arrived at a closed orchard. Really enjoyed the scenic setting on a beautiful fall day. I could see us returning to pick up some more cider again.

Piggies on the farm! Throw them an apple

Sweetland is one of my favorite orchards near the cities! We love going and reserving the hard apple cider tasting kit, which comes with pretty generous portions. Also you can add things into it, like hand pies (YUM) donuts (YUM) and local cheeses (YUM) and they box it up with a cutting board and knife so you can take it into the apple fields! Such a fun and chill time. We also got the apple tasting kit, which didn't seem super worth the price, as it was just 5 apples labeled. Lastly, they now have pigs at the farm you can visit! Super cute!

I have no kids, and personally do not enjoy, not even a little tiny bit, going to orchards with sticky cotton candy, pumpkin themed playgrounds, and live bands singing "The Farmer in the Dell" while I try and satisfy my midwestern girl cravings for some sweet apple picking. I wanna pick in peace! I don't want to wait in lines for apple donuts, and I don't want to use an overcrowded bathroom, and I don't want to park a mile away to get my face on some hard cider. So when Yelp told me I was near a small family-owned orchard on our drive through "SoMinn" we couldn't turn around fast enough. A leisurely drive to southern MN from the Cities is about an hour and some, and is always, always worth the trip. There were about 10 cars in their little lot as we pulled in (right outside of their farmhouse) and the owner's dad was ushering us into our spot, how sweet. We talked with him for a bit about the story of their orchard, how his kids bought the place 2 years ago and have turned it into a booming cider business. In fact, he and his wife move onto the property for 3 months each year to help with the process. As we talked, their border collie came to us wanting to play, followed by some very persistent chickens. They have apples and pears for sale inside their super cute barn, as well as a small selection of pastries, pressed ciders, cheeses, and dogwood coffee (they take credit cards too!). The best part, however, was their FREE tasting of all their hard ciders. The tasting wasn't rushed, and included a generous pour of each of their varieties (7 in total?) and their bartender was incredibly friendly and raved about the orchard and it's owners. My favorite was their Ice Cider (a liqueur) and the Scrumpy Original hard cider. Someone even brought in a fresh bottle to test as a group that they had just finished making a few minutes before - we all agreed it needed a little work, but how fun to be included in that! We felt like part of the family. This isn't a pick-your-own orchard, be we were encouraged to walk around and take an apple to snack on. They told us that they don't use pesticides of any kind (which you can totally tell by the way the ciders taste), and the grounds are tended to by hand, not by machines, so the ground is a bit uneven and wild, but that only added to the charm. We found some picnic benches scattered throughout and enjoyed the early fall afternoon, as should you.

I like to browse their web site to look at pictures and to get a peek into the whole orchard lifestyle. About time for a new post I think!

On the positive side, the strawberries were abundant, vibrant, juicy, and very easy to pick. We had three generations together for a fun family outing, including my 4-month-old and 1-year-old granddaughters, and we were excited to spend time outdoors making memories. Unfortunately, the experience was overshadowed by an interaction with an older gentleman who appears to have worked there for quite some time. After a two-hour drive, I briefly pulled over to speak with my daughters and figure out where we should park before unloading the children and heading to the fields. We were apparently stopped in an area where parking was not allowed, although there was no sign indicating that. Rather than approaching us politely, he immediately began yelling. I explained that we were simply trying to get a game plan together and that a softer approach would have been appreciated. Instead of de-escalating the situation, he continued to yell as I drove away to find a proper parking spot. What was most disappointing was that he then directed his yelling toward my daughters while they were standing with my granddaughters. The commotion upset my 1-year-old granddaughter to the point that she started crying, while my infant granddaughter and daughter looked on. Later, I shared my experience with another employee, who apologized for the earlier behavior. However, while we were in line paying, we witnessed the same gentleman confront another visitor who had parked in the area because she could not find handicap-accessible parking. He berated her, refused to provide his name when asked, and the interaction became so uncomfortable that she began recording the encounter on her phone. Ironically, a short while later, the very same gentleman approached me and apologized for his actions earlier. While I appreciated the gesture, he immediately followed it by explaining that "it's a stressful thing," which felt more like a justification for his behavior than a sincere acknowledgment of how his actions affected visitors. The strawberries were wonderful, and the farm itself has the potential to be a great family destination. The fruit quality and ease of picking made for an enjoyable outing, but customer service and the way guests are treated matter just as much as the product. Unfortunately, one employee's repeated behavior toward multiple customers significantly detracted from what otherwise could have been a very positive family experience.
