I don't want to sound like a sourpuss here, among all the glowing reviews, especially for a shop…read morethat is clearly independently and lovingly run. But, I do need to advise anyone who is unwaveringly accustomed to the Italian and Portuguese bakeries of New England (at least in the 1980s), and similar places, the pastries here aren't quite at that level. The pastries I tried were a little dense and shriveled, with a slight sour taste (which could've also been due to some uneven baking, erring on the overbaked side). In an apple filled item, the small amount of apples weren't quite soft and sweet enough, as well. Overall, the pastries were nearer to those of a very talented home baker than the polished work of a traditional professional pastry shop. Of course, for this specific region, this will be an enjoyable stop. With that in mind, I'm not surprised there are long lines; it must be very exciting to encounter a shop like this for the first time. There are very few other bakeries making pastries of this type, much less good ones. It's very, very hard to make excellent pastries. But, if you come from a land rich with bakeries, just set your expectations appropriately. Plus, there is the critical difference between New England and North Carolina bakeries: Would you rather have pastries that are sensational from sullen and unpredictably snappish people? ...or pastries that are decent and charming from laid-back and friendly people?

It's small and cute inside and they also offer outdoor seating. It's limited hours so make sure you check before you go. It's right around the corner from me but it's worth driving across town to try if you live on the other side!

This was my second visit. I had more time to look over all the sweets and bread this trip. When you…read moreenter there is a stand with big trays and tongs to put your selections on as you shop. You then take them to the counter and they box them up. There is a huge selection. Selling the baked goods by the piece is awesome as you can try so many different items. Everything we got was delicious. The person working the counter didn't speak English but was very nice. After I paid I saw they had homemade tortillas. An excuse to come back soon! I highly recommend this bakery.

My wife was moved to tears when she told the owner how much she appreciated it, and the owner simply smiled. While I didn't tear up, my mouth was watering at the sight of these baked goods. The bakery had display cases filled with different pastries, as well as several rolling racks full of pastries, including loaves of bread and cookies. We followed a large family's approach to shopping by grabbing one of the large silver trays and filling it with a variety of items. In the end, we ended up with around 10 items that only cost $7.00 - what a bargain, and they were delicious as well. Don't be intimidated to go in and get a lot of great treats. We love supporting local businesses. Even though the owners did not speak English, they were very friendly, and I was happy to use the "muchas gracias" that I know after my purchase.
