I've been told all my life getting a mammogram sucks, so I went into it with some trepidation. But when I arrived, the calm happiness of the receptionist put me at ease. She got me checked in and returned my ID and insurance cards quickly. I was called back shortly thereafter, shown to a changing area, and provided a hospital gown that tied in the front. I was told to remove my clothing to the waist, put the gown on and sit in a waiting area. I was amused to be sitting there among 4 other middle aged women wearing the same gown - all with the same level of wrinkles, lol. Hey, I wouldn't want to iron those things either. Soon, a [mammogram tech?] person came to get me and led me to a room with an unappetizing looking mammogram machine. The thing is huge. I sat and answered a series of questions about my (and sometimes my families') medical history, then we got down to business. This is truly where the 5 stars comes in. I had to get up on that machine and hold odd poses while the machine squashed my boobs. While not painful, it was super uncomfortable. The tech had to get me settled on the machine properly which means she had to handle my bosom often and my person sometimes. When I say she was the most gentle with me, and super reassuring the whole time...it's so very true. She made me feel very at ease with a procedure that is cringy AF. And she talked to me the whole time, which made me feel better about having my top half exposed while I clung to a machine. Leaving was a breeze. The tech walked me back to the closet where my upper clothes were and wished me a nice day. Hoping I don't have results where I'm required to come back in for a similar procedure, but if I DO have to do that, I'm secure in going back to Women's Imaging at Mercy. No photos to attach this time, lol, duh.

Then told me the Ultrasound I was having would leave an "estimated" $143 left to be paid after Insurance and how was I going to be paying that today. I told her I have $0 copay and my Cigna was an 80/20 plan and I get an EOB (explanation of benefits) after it's processed and I'll pay the balance. She said even though it wasn't processed yet and the scan wasn't even done yet I would have to pay the estimated responsibility. I said I get paid tomorrow can I pay half today $72 and the other half tomorrow. "No, absolutely not, You have to pay the full balance and if insurance covers more of the procedure we'll credit you back the difference". I said you guys can't work with me at all? She said "yes, you can apply for Care Credit card to use". So I cancelled and left. Now they are texting and emailing me several times a day about rescheduling. Advanced Radiology is complete sh*t show, their front desk staff is rude, they are NOT patient friendly. They will not work with you and don't care at all about the people coming to see them. When I called to talk to them about what happened I spoke with women in Pakistan that barely knew English. I was transferred twice and they didn't understand what I was telling them. One said the $143 was my copay. I told her my card said I have $0 copay. Please do yourself a favor, if you need imaging done, stay away from Advanced Radiology, especially the one at Franklin Square, they are beyond awful.

The man is a fantastic doctor. He tends to err on the safe side of things, which, at a high risk pregnancy center...I don't blame him!!! The ladies at the front desk are amazing. I think at first, they were a little cold but once you got to know them (like me who went 3x a week for practically my entire pregnancy!) they are actually very sweet and caring. Quite honestly, I don't blame them for being that way at first, they are swamped with pregnant people all the time. I mean the waiting room is always packed, and lets face it, pregnant people get irritated rather quickly. Sadly, you don't get to see Dr. Atlas every visit. He has many other doctors nurses and sonographers working for him that do all the leg work, he basically looks things over and tells you if everything is OK. Since I got to know him so well, he came in and checked on me if he wasn't very busy, even if everything was fine. He worked very closely with my OBGYN (http://www.yelp.com/biz/hoffman-and-associates-baltimore#hrid:VTohqOA-OXFkpupsUs7j3w/src:self) which I really like. I didn't have to repeat things and I was never concerned that they didn't get reports. One thing that I really like about this place is that if you're really sweet to the sonographers and you're in the right room (only a few of them have the right equipment to do this), they will give you a 3D sonogram of the baby (if they have time)! Usually you have to go to a separate place for that and pay $100+ so, that's pretty awesome of them. These people hold a special place in my heart, they made having my children possible and made it a great experience even though I was having a difficult time. When I was admitted to the hospital for delivery, both times Dr. Atlas came to my room, checked on me and just sat and talked on his break like we were friends. The nurses called upstairs to ask all about the babies. They're just good people and they know what they're doing! I was going to write I'd trust them with my life, but I actually did trust them with my life, and the lives of my children, and they went above and beyond!

Do not be fooled by the Hopkins name. As much as possible and suitable in your situation, please…read morelook into and meet with specialists at other centers before starting treatment here for your high-risk case. When it came to the critical PATHOLOGY department and its wholly dependent MEDICAL ONCOLOGY department, the breast center at JHH did not match community hospitals' care let alone what one hopes for when coming to an academic research center. Having gone through all steps, there are errors and systematic gaps at every step of the pathology system at JHH from the top-down, from multiple leaders' scientific attitudes to clerical and administrative errors and delays, which lead to harm. If leaders prioritize 'just-get-it-done' and checking-off the minimums over thorough tissue sampling, best practices, details, and accuracy, errors are bound to happen, and it's all for nothing. Both pathology and medical oncology departments flouted national standards of care pertaining to certain tests and treatment plans that other hospitals did not. There were errors and lower standards than expected from post-op tissue processing to testing to diagnosis. They actively inhibit pathology send-out for a second-opinion by making medical oncologists neither free to offer it to a patient nor to initiate that as the MD as some outside institutions require which causes diagnostic gaps leading to preventable, very unfortunate, and unforgivable delays in starting post-operation medical therapy-- delay in initiating systemic therapy directly affects survival rates. A directorial level MD of the hospital-wide surgical pathology department was dismissive and only quickly shifted to agreeing to send-out materials when they were told there was two months of delay in sending out unstained slides and all materials as formally requested by patient which made it impossible for the second institution to conduct critical diagnostic verification that would prevent wrong treatment. Research institutions track their times to consults and treatments that this center does not seem to track or ensure. The dynamics between the specialties at this center are also strange, dysfunctional, unprofessional, and seemingly inspire fear and lack of agency among MDs with less seniority. Sadly these issues irreversibly harm women. First steps matter a lot-- you learn this only after going through it all for the first time, coming from outside the medical sphere as a layman. You have one shot to stop the disease if you detect cancer early. Cancer cannot be addressed without utmost seriousness and attention to detail for every process-- each successive process hinges on the previous, leading to life or death, endless suffering or freedom from suffering. It is worth going two hours away to other leading centers for the sake of saving life and sparing suffering because of missteps made at the first hospital where you receive care which perhaps should not be Hopkins. With all due respect for Hopkins MDs' time and effort, it felt as if the hospital and some specialists cared more for projecting super-specialization and advertising/duping vulnerable new patients through the website than thinking of the woman when they look under the microscope. If all JHH breast center MDs don't stick their necks out to challenge existing processes, less-scientific dogma, and attitudes to create drastic improvements, they will simply continue to pass the buck and responsibility to other specialists at the patient's expense. For instance, speaking of entrenched dogma that is pushed at this center, exercise is a scientifically unproven treatment plan-- at best it is a complementary therapy, refuted by studies as a cure and thus deplorable to prescribe as the sole therapy to helpless patients who depend completely on treatment MDs authorize. Early detection means nothing if it's not top of mind for specialists to ensure greatest care for details in order to safely prevent metastatic disease for a cancer such as breast cancer which is far more curable than many other cancers.

I decided on UMMC partially because I have several family members who work here, but also because I'm a sentimental mush like that - I, myself, was born at UMMC and I'd like my daughter to be, as well. With that said... ...these folks are incredibly sweet. The technicians here are very thorough and will do scan after scan after scan to reassure you that everything's going okay with your pregnancy. These folks specialize in high-risk, all right - I'm 43 years old and a first-time mother (a diabetic, yet!), and there's probably no one more high-risk than I am. The genetic counselors here will give it to you straight, no sugar-coating, and I have to admit that I was frightened out of my wits at first - but when the tests came back, and all was clear, I was MUCH relieved! I think that if there HAD been something wrong, though, this place would be able to handle it with no issue whatsoever. The ladies at the front are very nice and they often ask after you, how you're feeling, etc. Appointments are prompt and efficient, but you never feel like you're being rushed to leave - on the contrary, they'll cheerfully answer any and all questions you might have. This office is VERY busy. I've seen tons of women in there with their pregnant bellies, just like me. :) I have complete faith that my baby will be perfectly all right during labor and delivery, thanks to the folks at UMMC. Recommended highly!
