You can't miss the HUGE colorful mural on the outside in the parking lot, but the RE itself is on the right side. Conveniently located by a 3 bus stop as well. I was in the market for some postcards and other papercraft supplies and brought some scrapbook paper I knew I wouldn't use with me to donate as well. The staff was very nice and organized. After seeing the true breadth of all of the various materials sold at the RE, I will definitely bring more miscellaneous craft stuff with me to donate next time. Have to make room for new stuff! I was able to purchase some postcards (they were 50 cents each or 3 for $1), a container to hold some of my other materials, and a set of Dublin stickers, all for $15 flat. Cannot stress enough how AFFORDABLE stuff is. In general I would say go in to look around and not want anything too specific, especially on a busy day like a Saturday, because it was a bit crowded. But they had materials truly for all typees of crafts: fabric, knitting, sewing, painting, papercrafts, jewelry, woodworking... as well as larger materials. Really affordable and hope to get the word out about this place! There are two gender-neutral restrooms located in the lobby of the building as well as part of the shared space.

Tons of cool signs, country home items... crochet (knitted ? don't know the difference) .. hand made items .. soaps (lego ones were my son's favorite).. candles... home decorations.. to name a few. There are few spaces out front on the street but best bet is to park in the lot across the street. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Very receptive to my son. Picked up a couple of really cool items. They have seasonal stuff so I will need to stop by often. I'll definitely be back and you should check it out.

It sounds like they have a great life traveling and buying cultural artifacts to share and sell in Philadelphia. I used to go here when it was in Olde City in 1997....at that time they had "First Fridays" of each month in which all of the galleries opened up and artists held openings with wine and appetizers...miss that....Philadelphia has changed. I bought and learned about Retablos from the owner and have been collecting them ever since...they are usually a painted wooden box divided in two levels..one telling a religious story and the other about daily life. The painted boxes have two doors on the front that fold open to allow the viewer to see the story inside made of sculpted figurines, flora, fauna, and other scenes. Today the art form has evolved to tell stories about folklore and life in rural Peru, Bolivia, and other countries. Their history began when the herders of animals could not make it to Mass so they brought a prayer box on their route to pray. This Folk Art form is truly amazing.....especially in Latin American Countries...where they are often used to make cultural and political statements. See Indigo Arts Gallery Commentary and On-Line Store... http://indigoarts.com/galleries/peruvian-retablos I also have always appreciate the fact that they owners of Indigo Arts host maybe even sponsor..but invite artists from other countries to show their work and spend time at their gallery showing their work through a gallery opening and "meet" the artist.

I'm shocked the owners and insurers allow guests to mingle with these items during events, particularly since I thought of absconding with a sculpture or accent piece quite a number of times during the wedding, and I'm sure others did, too. The acoustics were actually not too bad, despite all the carpets, wall hangings and sound-absorbing decor. They may or may not have a dedicated caterer for events, here; whoever provided the food for the wedding did a phenomenal job, especially with candy-sweet seasonal beets and tomatoes, a curry of shrimp and okra, and a wide selection of perfectly made / maintained hors d'oeuvres.* Bar-tending and serving staff were really nice, excellent at doing their assigned jobs. Not sure if they were employees / contractors of Material Culture or the caterer, but they were great! The one and only downside from a guest's perspective: Are there really only one pair of bathrooms for the entire venue, which must be rented out for something like 200 guests per event? It's possible there were more, but we didn't personally find them. If you have very old guests and very young ones, that's kind of nuckin' futs. ---- * OK, curiosity got the better of me and I looked it up. In addition to furniture like cabinets, benches, chairs, and tables, one can find rugs, lights/lanterns, books, statues, busts, and other odds and ends. The space is quite large, and the selection varied. Kudos to the curator as one can spend quite a bit of time combing through all of the many treasures. Pieces can trend toward the more expensive side; however, deals are to be found, and while we were there, there was a 30% off sale. The staff are friendly, and my transaction is quick and efficient. While on site, I purchased several wine bottle snuggies that were styled after Chinese-style clothing. They were $3.50 each--a bargain. They'll come in handy when I take wine or other such bottles to social gatherings in the future. Overall, a great experience. Amex is accepted here.
