I found myself with about a half hour on a lovely winter evening before meeting friends for dinner in downtown Media. It was the holidays, so there was lots of pretty lighting, cheerful displays and lots of people out and about. So I took a stroll along State Street, the "Main Drag" of the town. I come across Earth & State, and think, yeah, this is my kind of place. You know, the store that has artsy, kind of funky housewares and such. I love these places. Earth & State is among the best that I've been to. Well merchandised, with a good selection but not so cluttered you can't move around much. There's an emphasis on handmade/hand fired pottery, however there's also lots of other items such as funny coasters such as these that had misheard lyrics. I think a few people thought I was insane I was laughing so hard...see if you can get this one: On a dark desert highway/Cool Whip in my hair. You're welcome. The staff were friendly but unobtrusive, they were busy but not overwhelmed, so I didn't have to wait long to complete my purchase. Now, here's the best part: Lion did some Christmas shopping for me there (he knows me SO well) and yep...misheard lyric coaster and a tea towel that says "I'm just a girl, looking at a salad, wishing it were a cupcake." Have known / shopped this place since 2005, which is well near when they first opened. Great place for gifts! Almost all the thank you gifts, and hostess gifts we give come from this store. I appreciate that they always take a lot of time and care to beautifully wrap gift items in plenty of tissue padding inside an earthy gift box, with multi-color raffia ribbon, and a bold "Earth & State" tag on it. They also add a business card inside the box, and in some cases, a write-up on the artist whose work you are gifting. Their bags match the boxes, with the brown paper, bright raffia ribbon, and store logo tags. They treat all gifts with this care, regardless of price, which is a very professional touch. They also offer gift receipts, which again, is a great touch, and is very high-tech among small businesses (in my experience, at least). Earth & State also offers wedding registry services, yet another plus. (We received a number of wedding gifts from this store, prior to them offering the registry.) All in all, I believe the owners put their heart and soul into this shop, and that they work hard to make it a nice experience, and a soulful part of Media. They offer a price range below much of Turning Point's inventory, and items more personal and locally-sourced than 10,000 Villages, or Kuta, or Qunicy's. They are definitely a nice anchor to the Media shopping experience. I took a star off for a recent frustrating experience, which I will explain, but overall, this store would otherwise deserve 5 stars. Several weeks ago, the first night of the Media Film Festival, I called to ask if they had anything in stock similar to a pottery piece we'd purchased years ago. The owner was familiar with it, and said she could order for us. (I really appreciated how well she remembered things, and all based on a brief description.) That was great. I placed our order over the phone with Heather, and asked for the name of the artists, price, etc., all in my notes, so I could remember info about the item ordered. My husband and I actually went into the store the next day, and spent quite a bit, to get some items for personal use, as well as additional gifts. I identified myself to the Heather, who immediately remembered the order, and reconfirmed she'd call as soon as it came in. Seven weeks later, we never got a call. No missed call, no message from Earth & State. I have no idea what happened, but it was disappointing. After so many weeks with no reply, I gave up. Ended up buying something else. Just wish I'd gotten a call to let me know what happened. read more

I stopped in Earth & State to look for some last minute gifts and I couldn't be more pleased with the store as a whole. The selection is unique and the workers are so nice and helpful. I love that they support artists both local and far! Nothing is particularly inexpensive per se, but I believe that the quality is worth the extra expense. The women working the register even offered to wrap my item and did it in such a way that was much better than anything I'd throw together. Earth & State was my introduction to Media, PA, literally. Drew, the owner, introduced me to the landlord and I pretty much never left. I adore this shop. It has everything you never knew you wanted or needed. Drew and his wife are EXTREMELY knowledgeable about the products in their store. If asked, Drew can give you a little bio on the artist who created every item you intend to buy. As far as I know, everything in the store is fair-trade. Drew is a HUGE advocate for Fair Trade items. So, I really like Earth & State. The stuff is a bit expensive, but that is pretty expected and understandable for a place that sells this sort of stuff. I like that a lot of the work comes from local artists. There is a GREAT selection of dishes. I've bought several bowls and mugs from here and would always check them out first for more. The owners are pretty knowledgeable about their products- who made them and where they made it- which is a nice touch. I like things that clearly came from another person. Earth & State was like visiting Leonardo DaVinci's man cave. Everything is affordable and yet, still fair-trade and unique. Each piece has a local story, an inspiration, or a connection to a beautiful place far away. The shopkeepers seem pretty involved in keeping Media the positive, creative, and growing place it is. They founded it after being inspired by the thoughtful gifts given to them when they wed. When we visited, our daughter was greeted by high school kids who sang her happy birthday. It wasn't her birthday, but she didn't seem to mind that they were just checking off a task from their bounty hunt. I'm proud to report we helped those kids check off 3 other things, including sharing a harrowing story of risk and bravery! read more

Earth and State is my go-to for gifts. They have unique, artsy, earthy items that you don't find any where else too often. The people, who get the gifts, are always in love with it. They have items for all ages: from babies, to the college bound, to my parents' 45'th anniversary, to my friend's wedding present. And they ship, too!! And it doesn't cost much to ship ($10 was mine). They'll wrap it up, nicely, so it doesn't break during shipping and it arrives beautifully. The staff are always willing to share the story that goes with the item, too, as far as where it was made and by whom.
