For an appetizer, we ordered the bruschetta, which was solid. It was served with a sprinkle of parmesan and a drizzle of balsamic. For my cocktail, I ordered their bourbon old fashioned. It was also good. My dining companion ordered a Bulleit bourbon Manhattan, requesting it served up with cherries. It ended up coming served with olives, which is an oddity we've only come across in Wisconsin. He decided to give it a whirl (rather than sending back) and I had a sip as well. We're both decidedly not fans. So...lesson learned on that one! For dinner, I opted for the broiled shrimp and brussels sprouts. The shrimp were plump and broiled to perfection and came with lemon and cocktail sauce. Delish! The brussels sprouts were steamed, which isn't my favorite method for cooking sprouts (would have much prefered oven roasted or sauteed). That said, they tasted fresh. My dining companion ordered their Wisconsin Jambalaya, which was an interesting mix of bratwurst, chicken, shrimp, and rice covered in a spicy wisconsin cheese sauce. I had a taste and thought it was great! Meals come with soup or salad and a dinner roll as well (which was soft and warm!). Our server was friendly and efficient with our meal nicely spaced. I have been coming to this restaurant my entire life. My family has held countless events here, my…read moregrandparents live right down the road, and I have the unique perspective of having worked for both the previous owners, the Plattenbergs, and the current owner, Bill. To be clear, my time as an employee was over 15 years ago; I am writing this as a lifelong patron and neighbor who has watched this establishment decline firsthand over multiple decades. The Chapparal has changed drastically over the last thirty years. Under the Plattenbergs, the restaurant was meticulously maintained. Today, the lack of hygiene is staggering. You walk in and it smells like a urinal. The bathrooms are absolutely disgusting--horrendous smells and filth that make porta-potties look clean by comparison. This extends to the kitchen. When I worked there, I saw dead rats pulled out of pots on rarely used shelves and a dead mouse in the bottom of a cooking pot. I have even been served sodas with bugs in the glass that I had to pick out myself. The food handling is just as concerning. On buffet nights, the food often sits out for 4 to 5 hours without being replaced. It is well known that Bill reuses buffet food for multiple days; if it isn't used, it gets covered, refrigerated, and put back out the next night. I have personally seen the same tray of food on the buffet Friday, Saturday, and Sunday because Bill refused to throw it away. Countless people, myself included, have complained of getting sick every time they eat here. Beyond the physical state of the restaurant, the management is unprofessional. Bill has a history of screaming at and belittling female employees in front of guests. Most recently, he did this to my mother, who is an independent contractor, screaming at her in front of the clients she brought into his establishment. He seems to enjoy screaming at women, though I doubt he has the balls to do the same to a man. Furthermore, if you book an event here, be wary of the pricing. Bill charges by the physical plate used rather than the person. If a child goes up and puts a single scoop of pudding on a plate, you are charged the full meal price (e.g., $13.99). If they do that four times, you are paying for four full adult meals for one child. This isn't a "one-time bad experience"--it is a documented, long-term decline of a place I once cared about. For your health and your wallet, please take your business elsewhere. People need to know what is actually happening behind the scenes at the Chapparal.
