Small little Columbia County Park co-managed with Suwannee River Water Management District- this…read morepark has a boardwalk out to view the falls, picnic tables, a playground and a historic building- a church. Parking lot is small- can hold maybe 20 cars, this park is north of Lake City and right off I10. I had read about this little known waterfall recently and when we stopped at a gas station for a pit stop, I saw the sign and off we went! Directions: Travel north on US 41, pass under I-10, turn right on NW Falling Creek Road; travel 1 mile. The park is on the right before crossing the creek. The boardwalk splits at one point for a loop that leads parallel to the creek, while the other (clearly marked Falls with an arrow) leads to overlook the falls. It's only a quarter mile hike in and you will hear the water before you see it. Rusty- dark color water flows down the creek, the limestone rock worn from the water. The forest around is lush and green. The only critters we saw was one turtle, spiders galore and a butterfly. We heard birds- but I didn't spot them. Tiny little pit stop gave me some great photo opportunities! I recommend bug spray if you are heading out!

Rum Island is a park maintained by Columbia County. It offers access to the Santa Fe River for…read morelaunching boats (canoes and kayaks are especially popular) and access to a small spring for swimming. This spring is right on the river and will "brown-out" (become overflowed by dark river water and made less-appealing for swimming) when the river rises or when the natural flow of the spring decreases. Much of the time it is clear though and because the admission to Rum Island is free, it's a popular spot in the summer. I've free-dived the spring and it's often a bit dark but you sometimes can see a lot of fish. Though the county has provided a walkway and boardwalks leading into the spring, they only furnish Port-a-Potties for restrooms and there is nowhere (aside from your car) to change clothes and no showers. That said, let's be grateful to Columbia County for providing it at all. The name comes from the fact that the actual island which is in the river (and can be reached via canoe or swimming) was used apparently during Prohibition as a bootlegger's hideaway. Because it's now a county park, you cannot drink rum or any liquor here now, alas. Several families living on the long, twisting, road to the park have dogs and cats that may be in the road, so please go slow and be careful so you don't hit someone's pet.

March and April have always been our favorite months for a quick overnight stay and when the Museum was open we have stayed longer. Dog poop bag stations are well stocked unlike other State Parks, but I am still concerned about their budget. Almost sure it is the best State Park of Hamilton County Time to make reservations, there are months that bookings are almost impossible since kayaking and canoeing are popular sports on the River

There were already a good amount of people and the parking lot was almost full, but there was still plenty of space for people in the springs. There isn't a lot of space to put your belongings as there aren't really any large open spaces, but people pretty much just put their stuff where they can. You can either enter the springs via some stairs that take you right to the deep portion, or you can walk around the springs and enter at a shallower section. If you do go in at the shallower section, be aware that there's quite a strong current that can be difficult to fight against to get into the deep area. I would also recommend chacos or sandals of some kind as there are a lot of rocks in the shallower end that can be very slippery. The water is VERY cold, so be prepared for that, but know that it will also feel amazing afterward and soak any body aches/pains away. The springs are one of the most beautiful swimming areas I've seen--so much beautiful nature surrounding it. If I could go there WITHOUT the loud crowds of people, it would be the most absolutely perfect spot to relax and spend a day. Even with that it was fantastic and I would 100% return.

We stayed at the adjacent river camp and had an amazing two nights. The public put-in is a little…read moretough to find, about a mile and a half down a rutted road from the river camp. But there's ample parking and a large sand beach, easy for launching your craft. The trip down the stairs to the beach is a little irksome to manage, but not very bad. Note that we left the river camp with several Lone Star ticks attached to us -- so please do yourself a favor and use DEET, wear long pants and avoid brushing up against any tall grasses or bushes.

The park ranger was extremely nice. She was very friendly and helpful. The cabin was clean and cozy. No internet, TV or cell phone service. We brought our own bed linens, pillows, food and board games. Springs was beautiful but crowded. We did not go in for a swim. Very few practice social distancing and very few wore face covering at the local stores. My husband was told to remove his face mask as it's like strapping a muzzle on his face. What?!?!?!?! I was flabbergasted by her comments. I should've done my research prior. Oh well, lesson learned.

This is a must see if in the Thomasville, GA area! I've never seen live oak tree branches of this…read moresize. They estimate the start of the tree around 1685. In 1936, it was registered as the 49th member of the National Live Oak Society. There's a brochure on the back of the oak tree statistics plaque with information on the Big Oak Cam. You can call a number and it will take a pic of you in front of the tree. You can then go to their website and download the photo for free! Kinda cool! Would highly recommend! Such a cool historic landmark.

I knew this bridge had been closed to traffic for a very long time but when I pulled up…read moreafter a long detour into the sticks it was news to me that it's now closed off to pedestrians as well. I could have used a heads up on this one as getting on the bridge as advertised was my whole reason for coming out this way. I had a whole backpack of spray paint leftover from Krog Street Tunnel in Atlanta. And all the pictures I had seen of people traipsing over this colorful bridge with impunity only made it worse. I got the best pictures I could from behind the fencing and they were disappointing. Fortunately there's a bit of graffiti under the bridge as well and it's not all mindless toy scribbling like much of what's on the forbidden bridge is. And there's some oddball abandoned house right there that's all tagged up and a weird disused basketball hoop. And some nature trails. Think those should technically be in a review for the adjacent park though but I've got too many reviews on my queue so I doubt I'll get to it. I walked as far as the next bridge over the river, an off limits train property bridge but the trails might go a lot farther. Not really sure.
