I have been living at Sutton Plaza since end of April and love my apartment and location. The staff are really nice and accommodating. There are leasing agents/property manager available during all days other than Sunday. Norma and Ian have both been very kind to me. But during the evenings and weekends, there are front desk staff/guard monitoring who are coming in and out of the building, which is great and makes me feel very safe and secure. I seriously need to learn their names since I see them everyday lol But both are very nice and accommodating.
Since moving in, they have made several improvements to the building. Each floor was updated with new paint and tiles near the elevator. The entrance is currently being updated, making it look like a construction site. But I don't mind since it's helping spruce up the place. I occasionally telework a couple days a week and hear a little bit of noise from the updates of apartments, halls, but nothing too noisy where I should just go into work. The downside to this building is that there is a really small gym, with little equipment; two treadmills, elliptical, bikes, and some other machines. nonetheless, I am still happy for that because it provides the essentials I need for now. And they don't have a rooftop or anything fancy. But overall, the staff and maintenance crew are always around, cleaning up the place and responsive with requests. I am thankful the halls do not smell or are dirty. Most apts in DC, you can hear tv's playing and people talking, and smell the food people are cooking, which I am thankful it does not stink! One extra thing I do want to add is that when I moved in, my sofa did NOT fit in the elevator. I have a sofa with sleeper. So the movers could have said no, they are not carrying it up several flights of stairs, but luckily they did, and I tipped them very well. Just a caveat for those who are looking to buy furniture. Make sure you measure your furniture and the elevator. I bought my sofa a few months prior to moving into my place so I am happy the movers weren't jerks.
My apartment itself is about 470 square ft. Probably the smallest apartment I have ever lived in. But again, I am sacrificing space for location and price. And that's the price of living in a VERY nice part of DC. Previously, I had an apartment in Arlington that was close to 650 sq ft with lots of closets. I had to get rid of my dining room table since it didn't fit into my new place. I also have some of my seasonal stuff in my friend's storage unit who lives next door in the Radius condo building. If I didn't have that, I would have to get rid of more things in my place in order to fit everything. I love having all utilities since I don't have to worry about several bills. I also love having a washer/dryer in my apartment too.
Location is probably the best part of living at Sutton Plaza. I work across from Metro Center so it's a 15 mins walk to/from work. A 20 mins walk to the National Mall, a couple blocks from 14th street corridor where there are several restaurants and bars. Whole Foods is 4 blocks away, Trader Joe's is about 7 blocks away and Giant is about 6 blocks away. And three major metros to include Convention Center, McPherson Square and Metro Center. Moving into the city has encouraged me to walk more and not worrying about drinking and driving. I don't even bother going to other neighborhoods of DC because everything is at my fingertips where I live.
When it comes to parking, I requested to be put on the waitlist to purchase a space. I just received my space recently after one became available. Street parking is available with a D2 parking permit, however, it can get a little tricky finding a spot. About 80% of the time, I was able to find parking within a two block radius. Other times I would have to park several blocks away which was a little annoying. I limited driving my car because I was worried about finding a parking space if I came home too late. And the first week I parked my car on the street, I noticed marks all on my bumper. It was NOT pretty and I wish people would be more respectful when parking their cars not to damage other people's property :( But I guess that's the risk you take when you park on the street. I went out and bought a bumper guard to protect my car which helped but annoying to look at.
With all things considered, the rent price is very reasonable and I came in knowing all of the ups and downs so I can't complain too much. Probably one of the least expensive complexes if you are looking for a one bedroom, all utilities and w/d in unit. I plan to stay here until I meet my forever man and move into the 'burbs lol. Also contingent if they raise rent dramatically each time I sign another lease. I recommend this place to anyone looking for a nice place to live in a very ideal location and for a decent price for the area. read more
