It was difficult to persuade a formerly independent person to agree to around-the-clock are but the staff sent to help her have been great. Even as her dementia has progressed, the caregivers are wonderful. Duties include dressing and undressing, bathroom assistance, cooking meals, laundry and some very light housework. She had gone through the same procedure that my grandmother just went through, so in many ways she was more informative than the doctors in her ability to explain everything in simplified layman english. She was super friendly, had an uplifting sense of humor, and was very gentle. My grandma loved her! She got my grandma all set up to receive fresh medical supplies and monitoring equipment sent right to her door, and scheduled a nurse to come over and check in on her twice a week. I will keep this post updated as we go, but Oxford seems like they really have their act together, and I don't foresee that there will be any problems with their services.

Oxford has, for a very long time, been a "bad word" in home healthcare in this area. I have known…read morepeople that have worked for them and they treat their employees just as poorly as their clients. I have yet to meet one person from this company that had "bedside manors". Most are brash and not very friendly. Once you sign up for ANY of their services, many OTHER services are tacked on that you will probably not need and are most defiantly NOT ordered by your doctor or anyone but them in fact. Trying to cancel service with Oxford is like trying to cancel a magazine subscription. You can call them over and over again, but the staff assigned to your case will continue to call and leave messages that they will "be three today" with a FIVE HOUR window of when or more. Remember, this is AFTER you've canceled. There are MULTIPLE numbers that will call you, most of which are private cell phones of the staff going to the homes. Calls back are often ignored or go straight to voicemail. Calling the main office gets annoying as well, because you are tossed from extension to extension of countless individuals NOT AT WORK RIGHT THEN! You have NO idea how many "breaks" and "days off" the management get in this place, it's insane. Oxford's main goal is to put as many charges on you or your insurance as possible and BUG YOU constantly even after you've canceled. Even the "assessment" is garbage. It's just more of the same recording of pills and telling you things you already know: "You seem to be up and awake today." Are you asking or have you become captain obvious? Do NOT use Oxford! It's like working with politicians. You NEVER get a straight answer and you will have to work your tail of to cancel the service. Oh, and anything that happens to NOT be approved by insurance that you didn't need anyway.. ya YOU will get charged for that.. not your insurance. STAY AWAY FROM OXFORD!

Low and behold, now I am being charged and have to pay back for this service when VA had been carrying for him with his lung cancer. I did what they told me, not ever going thru this before. My father was a resident in the Maple Wood Alzheimer's Special Care facility for the last five…read moremonths of his life. This facility was absolutely wonderful for him! He had previously spent a few weeks in a different high quality nursing home, but he did terribly there due to his desire to constantly be on the move and becoming overstimulated by the noise and activity. He actually was expelled from that facility due to his restlessness and interference with other residents - such as going into their rooms and bothering them. Since all of the patients in Maple Wood suffer from similar cognitive limitations, his behavior was not as disturbing to the other residents and he enjoyed the quieter environment. He loved to walk the hallways and could stop and sit in readily available and comfortable seating. [By regulation, chairs are not allowed in the hallways of most nursing homes.] The staff were WONDERFUL. They obviously cared for dad and did their best to keep him nicely dressed and groomed - which was not easy due to his resistance to "help" and his penchant for "borrowing" other peoples belongings. The food was also wonderful, which resulted in his gaining weight (he had been anorexic) shortly after moving in. When dad began his terminal decline, the administration and staff gave us the opportunity of involving hospice and he passed away peacefully in his room with family members at his side. I never fully relaxed prior to dad's living at Maple Wood. I always had concern in the back of my mind that he would get himself into some sort of trouble and would either harm himself (accidently) or that I or my sister would have to drop everything and run to his rescue. Once dad had moved to Maple Wood, I was able to fully relax when I was away from him, as I knew he was safe and being cared for better than I could!
