Sushi has gone down hill immensely in the last few years. Unless you are getting tempura sushi I wouldn't bother going here. The quality of fish as well as the way they prepare it, is not up to par. The fish is not cut properly and had to send fish back multiple times for them to cut the sashimi and they never got it right. Hope that they return to putting more time in effort into their staff in the future. read more

I mean ehhh yeah it's better than anything I've had in Lansing or Ann Arbor but cheese on sushi. Just not my thing the prices are pretty steep too 4.50 for a bottle of bud light. I spent almost 50 on 2 rolls and 2 beers. Now the waiting staff is amazing you get a good sense they actually enjoy working so that's good. I was also impressed with the speed that I got my sushi they weren't busy but I got some stuff that needed to be toasted so that's good. But the two missing stars are for intense price for what you actually get, and the lack of flavour I got two completely different types of rolls but they tasted almost identical. The rolls almost seems like they were having an identity crisis so they were like yeah let's just add cheese. read more

After many visits to Sushi Zen in the past as a diner, ordered take out for the first time tonight. I was very disappointed that when you order a dinner for full price, you don't receive any soup or salad (which every other restaurant provides with a full price dinner meal). Called back to ask if they had forgotten to put it in my order and the young woman was rude and hung up on me when I expressed my displeasure. All in all, I love Sushi Zen, but it's pretty cheap of them to not give everything that you are paying for with a take out order. Service is great and friendly. Atmosphere is great as well. Spicy tuna roll had a fish flavor ( usually hints towards not as fresh as it should be ) white tuna sashimi was fresh and creamy, hit the back pallet of the tongue nicely. Miso soup was off a bit, almost tasted like the beef broth burnt in rendering or it was sitting to long on heat elements. Salad was iceberg ginger - pretty basic. By far my favorite place to go for sushi. The staff is friendly and the service is impeccable, the restaurant is so clean, and the food is constantly outstanding. I went with a friend recently and we ordered the Shogun, Dragon, and Crunch rolls. The shogun roll had shrimp tempura and was topped with fish roe, the dragon roll was an avocado and eel roll that was tasty and surprisingly refreshing, and the crunch roll was a tempura roll with tempura shrimp. All of them were incredibly delicious, and the presentation was spectacular. Don't be fooled by the restaurant's location; it may look dingy on the outside, but a hidden treasure awaits on the inside. I can't wait for my next visit! read more

I don't know man..... My husband and I visited for dinner after many strong recommendations from fellow sushi lovers. I REALLY REALLY REALLY wanted to like this place. I don't know if they hyped it up too much, if we had unrealistic expectations or what, but something just went way wrong somewhere. We went in on a Saturday night, and we were met with a decent wait time of about 40 minutes. I was actually very surprised at how small the restaurant actually is, but it's a pretty good looking spot overall. The tables were laid out through the center of the restaurant, booths line the walls, and there is also a decent amount of seating up around the bar area. After our wait, we were seated at a table closer to the center of the dining area. I did feel like we were a little squished in, but luckily one half of our table faced outward into the center walkway which gave the illusion of more space. Now onto the meal..... Appetizer: Fire Cracker Appetizer. I think THIS is what gave us unrealistic expectations for the rest of our meal. This thing set the bar astronomically high. Like....it was.....amazing. Deep fried jalapenos, stuffed with spicy tuna, crab salad, and cream cheese. It was perfect. 10/10 easily. I mean, I'd go back just for that app alone! Entrees: This is where we started to lose it. We ordered the diablo roll, chicken teriyaki, another roll I cant recall...MSU roll maybe? and CAA roll (cucumber, avocado, asparagus). I just wanted it to be over. Our rolls were so bland, it was like I was eating air. As we began to work out way through everything, we just kind of looked at each other and wondered how in the world did we end up with this after starting out on such a great note? I REALLY enjoy sushi. I always end up eating with my eyes and have to stuff myself to finish the last bites (because anyone who eats leftover sushi is not to be trusted) and this time I found myself wanting to eat everything so it wouldn't go to waste. Plainly put, it wasn't good. Our experience is completely to the contrary of our friends and family that have been here and they can't seem to figure out what happened either. Maybe it was an off night? Maybe we aren't the foodies we thought we were and just don't know what good sushi is? Either way, someone missed the mark BIG TIME. We managed to power through the rolls and ended up just sitting there staring at each other, both equally confused as to what just happened in front of us. Our plates were cleared, our bill was paid, we hung our heads in defeat as we walked back out to our car in silence.... Would I give it another go? Maybe if I went at different time or ordered carry out. For as many positive reviews as this place has gotten and for as many times as this place has been recommended to me, this experience had to be a fluke!! My husband on the other hand isn't in a rush in the slightest to make a redemption trip. Hopefully one of these days we'll be able to make it out, but unfortunately I don't think it will be any time soon... One star for service, one star for cleanliness. read more

Maybe could have had a nice meal.. except for the fact we sat there for over 20 minutes without someone even getting our drink order. I know people can exaggerate.. but I am a former server and we had a strict 60 second greeting/drink order policy. So after minutes went by I actually started a timer... when I brought it to the hostess' attention, several minutes still went by so we just packed up and left. And the "manager" followed us out because my friend left her phone at the table.. she did nothing to make us stay or anything. She just kept saying sorry. This is my favorite sushi restaurant. I've been eating here for at least 10 years now, and they always deliver a quality experience. The chefs are well trained, and if you sit at the bar they can be pretty funny, if you tip them they all get excited and it's fun, and I've been given free things there on multiple occasions, just 'on the house' and its always these crazy off menu items. Overall, if you want a quality dining experience, sushi zen is the place to go. read more

Wife is Asian and know she sushi and finds the menu very redundant... guessing it is not Asian-owned, but at least the Sushi Chef is Japanese. I've been debating back and forth about this review for a few days, but in the end, if we're not giving honest reviews, then what's the point of Yelp? We found this place in a little strip mall sometime last year, and since then we've been hitting it every time we're in the area, always receiving excellent service and sushi. That was then, unfortunately that's not the experience we had this time. It had been a few months since we were in Brighton, we had to be in Ann Arbor in about an hour so we stopped for a quick bite of sushi like we had previously. When we walked in we were pleasantly surprised with a beautifully remodeled restaurant. The place was about 3/4 full, we were promptly seated at the sushi bar. Our waiter was there almost immediately taking our drink order, so far things are going well. Upon looking at the menu I found 60 some odd "special rolls" all of which had cucumber which makes the roll taste fresh, mixed with a combination of cream cheese, tempura, mayo, cheese, heavily applied sauces, and/or deep fried preparation, all of which overpower any flavor present in the fish. This made me a little suspicious as any time a sushi restaurant goes out of it's way to not showcase it's fish, it's a bit of a warning sign. But with our previous experiences here I just assumed that they were catering to what the locals wanted and proceeded to place our order with our attentive waiter, so far so good. Fast forward to 45 minutes later, we still haven't received our meal. Our waiter is apologetic, trying to take care of the situation, we're obviously not happy, but it's not his fault. He tries to get his manager to see what they could do to take care of the issue, but his manager and the owner were busy, and he wasn't allowed to make any customer service decisions. How can everyone in charge be busy? The restaurant industry is a service industry, if you're not there to serve your customers maybe you should find a different industry. At that point I was thinking, well, the place is poorly managed, but as long as the food comes soon it'll be ok. A few minutes later our meal arrives, only making things worse. Our rainbow roll, which was colorful, had very little flavor distinction between the various types of fish, same story with the dragon roll. The avocado in the eel and avocado roll as well as the avocado roll was turning brown, The eel, which is normally served heated was roughly room temperature, same with the other fish, it wasn't noticeably cold, but much closer to room temperature. Now on to what's usually the star of the show, the nigiri sushi, we ordered white tuna and smoked salmon. The white tuna was acceptable, but not super fresh, the smoked salmon, which would normally be the most flavorful thing on the plate was bland and flavorless. Overall, the sushi was no better than what you can find on any "Asian buffet". In the end, we ended up paying $60 for low quality sushi that wasn't worth half that. It makes me sad to see what's happened here, this formerly stellar sushi bar is now all style with no substance. I understand the remodel was expensive, and buying quality ingredients is a large expense. But, if the focus isn't shifted back to the food it'll close and be a great opportunity for another sushi chef that cares about quality. read more

It's nice that Brighton has a sushi place. But having dined here twice (once dine-in, once carry-out) I can say that Brighton does not have a "good" sushi place in Sushi Zen--and definitely doesn't have a Japanese restaurant there either. On my wife's and my first trip there, I ordered some sort of Korean-type dish; it was full of more vegetation than a typical garden, and had only a smattering of beef. The sushi was pretty decent, but nothing spectacular. My wife's tempura dinner was, again, passable. Our second trip (carry-out) was unplanned. I had a stomach bug, but had regained enough of an appetite by the evening to want soup. And what better soup than a good udon? My wife stopped by on her way home, and got each of us a tempura udon, and a tuna roll for me. First off: the tuna roll was excellent, and at $5, a pretty good bargain. I scarfed that down in no time. But turning to the udon, my wife and I were both met with horrible disappointment. Udon, as we know it (from quite a few establishments), tends to be a fairly simple soup--udon noodles, of course, plus scallions, maybe a fish cake, and little else. Sushi Zen's concept, though, would better be described as "cabbage soup, with udon noodles." I literally had to pause to consider whether I'd ordered incorrectly. I'd have some measure of forgiveness if the broth was good, but here too Sushi Zen falls flat. The broth had no traditional flavor whatsoever, and what taste it did have was colored (badly) by the abundance of that nasty cabbage. We both ate what we could (the tempura itself was fine), I drank some of the broth, but we both ended with half-full containers that ended up being tossed. So, with all of this said, and having only made two trips to Sushi Zen, why am I giving only two stars? It's simple, really. In this case, I have no choice but to compare Sushi Zen with other Japanese restaurants in the area (an area I concede to be fairly large, stretching from Novi to Ann Arbor to Howell). My "gold standard" is Happy Sushi; they strike the perfect balance, in my mind, of price and quality. In this case, Sushi Zen falls horribly short of any sort of mark. Their prices are far too high for the quality they're putting out, not just on their entrees but on their sushi as well. (While I found their tuna roll to be a good value, their other rolls are quite expensive, comparatively.) In general, they seem to be going for an upscale vibe, based on their prices and their ambiance, but they frankly don't have the food to back this up. If you're looking for good Japanese food in the Brighton area, I say, head down the street to Sagano, or travel a bit further to Blue Fin in Genoa Township. If it's strictly sushi you want, I'd head to either Blue Fin or to One World in Novi. But whatever you do, give Sushi Zen a miss. I know I will. read more

Sushi Zen is not only the best in Michigan, but can say, anywhere in the US. The food is always fresh and cooked to perfection. The selection is awesome. Love the fresh ginger salad that comes with the meal, along with the miso soup. Don't always know what to order as everything is delicious. And the desserts, homemade green tea or red bean ice cream that you can't find anywhere else. From sake to an incredible drink, what a place for a date. The service, waiters and managers are friendly and attentive. When I travel to Michigan, Sushi Zen is at the top of my list to eat. Love this place!!!! read more

After two attempts to get a decent meal I give up. I eat sushi at least three times a week and have never had such poor service and lousy food. On the first trip I had the chef's choice for lunch- the bulk of the meal was "sushi pizza"- imitation crab sandwiched between tortillas- yuck. So I gave it a second chance and have to say I didn't get to try the food because I couldn't get served. They were not overly crowded and I was in fact the ONLY person sitting at the bar. While waitstaff moved about I was given a menu and sat for 20 minutes without being acknowledged. Don't waste your time on this one- poor value, week food, and lousy service!! read more

Disappointed. Place looks nice and we were seated quickly, but that was the best part. We found inedible fibers in the salad dressing. After looking around for our waitress (We could see her in back rolling silverware, but she never looked out to see us.) for about 5-10 minutes, we finally got the attention of another waitress. After another 5 minutes, the manager came by and explained that they were from the fresh ginger and that it's common hete. Really? Your cooks don't know how to use a strainer? Then we got our meals. My husband got a mountain of undercooked tofu in a watery, taseless teryaki sauce. I got seven pieces of vegetable tempura with the tempura sauce bowl sitting in a mound of wasabi. Not worth $15.95. Service and food were both indifferent. I guess we paid the high price for the interior, because the food wasn't worth it. read more

I have been going to Sushi Zen since it opened more than 3 years ago. I lived in Ann Arbor for three years and was turned on to sushi by a couple friends. It is not an easy task to find quality sushi that is at its best. Then there is the task of making it taste good. Sushi Zen has created a solid reputation of acquiring the freshest ingredients treating them right and twisting them into a delicious roll. All the servers are hilarious and extremely helpful and I love that the owners are there regularly. Sushi Zen is the only place to get sushi in Brighton, and its food rivals that of some of the best sushi restaurants I have ever been to. read more

Sushi Zen is amazingly great, I am visiting for business and it is always good to find a great restaurant. This was recommended by a Brighton local and he was right in suggesting it for dinner. They have a large menu with many choices. I had the King Salmon, Kiss of Fire Tuna Roll and Cajun Tuna Sushi. Every bit was enjoyed. The meal comes with Miso soup and salad.
