Decided to try their lunch menu, which is quite the deal, if you get the rolls. Not all the rolls are available, but there are enough to please most folks. The addition of an appetizer and salad or soup makes it an even better deal. The bento box special looked reasonable as well. The three of us got the 3 rolls special and it was quite enough. They were tasty but nothing over the top special. Our server was quite nice and checked on us often. I think that the food was about 3.5 stars, but the service easily pushes it to 4. We'll try it again sometime and see if it's worthy of being in our sushi rotation. read more

Get ready for a superlative review. If you read many of my previous reviews that is a rarity. This unassuming but popular eatery in downtown Shawnee pulls all the stops. In my opinion the decor and ambience is not fancy but the food is deliciously prepared and proffers excellent service. Our usual waiter is very friendly as well as efficient. He is the waiter that should teach all waiters. Whether you order sushi or teriyaki the food is spot on and you do not have to pay an arm and a leg for your bill. I came here around 11:45am for lunch. This was Review Of The Day last week so thanks Kent! The parking lot was small but I didn't have any issues finding parking. There were not a lot of people eating here but that was fine to me. There was a sushi bar as well as 2 flat screen TVs suspended from the ceiling. I looked at their menu online before I came over and the menu was the same as posted online. It made it easier to decide what to order. I ordered the lunch special for $8.39 and chose the Chicken Teriyaki. It came with a crab rangoon and choice of salad or soup. I went with the Egg Drop soup since I haven't had that for years. They did have miso soup but I usually ordered that and wanted to change it up. I also ordered the Dinosaur Roll $6.95 because that was one of the popular rolls ordered. It was a few minutes before the crab rangoon, soup, and chips (I think?) came to my table. The Egg Drop soup was pretty good but it was also hot temperature-wise. The crab rangoon was also hot on the inside but that was good as well. The Dinosaur Roll came out before my Chicken Teriyaki. The Dinosaur Roll was delicious and I would recommend it if anybody liked soybean paper wrap or want to try it. I'd prefer the seaweed wrap though. The Chicken Teriyaki came with a mound of rice, mushrooms, peppers, onions, broccoli, and chicken. The amount was enough for one person and it would fill someone up (it did for me). Great deal for $8.39 for all of that food (minus the Dinosaur Roll). I would recommend coming here for lunch because the lunch special deal was the most bang for your buck. Hadn't eaten there in years. Stopped by today for chirashi sushi lunch- on a Tuesday, which is not supposed to be optimum for freshness, but instead I got great service, pleasant people, and perhaps the freshest tasting sashimi I can remember having (I ate it with very little seasoning.) It's back on my regular list. In fact, I can't remember why I quit going , unless it was merely price. The waiter I talked to said he had been working there 11 years and ate there every day. It's off the main drag and Nieman in Chonee, but you walk in in they've got the sushi bar with four or five chefs ready to go.Everything is fresh and flavorful and nicely arranged on the plates. read more

Good sushi rolls with the saucy frills. We enjoyed the all you can eat experience and the staff was very attentive. We went on a Friday night and was seated immediately. We had a group of six and all of us received our food at in a timely manner. The miso was a nice and light starter with the small salad. As the rolls came out the quality and presentation were consistent. It wasn't sloppy for all you can eat. Beware if you order too much that you can't finish and have leftovers you get a surcharge. This is to make sure folks don't take advantage of the service price. We enjoyed our meal and so did our friends. We will be back to try the other dishes. The shrimp tempura roll with all the frills was delicious and a favorite. The sashimi was good. Most of the fried rolls were a hit except for the cheesecake roll. Please do not let the appearance of this place fool you! If you think at all like I do you, you might be a little leary about eating sushi in Kansas City. From the outside, Sushi Mido looks like it might need a facelift. Inside, the restaurant is clearly old and is dimly lit. I'll tell you what though, this is hands down the best sushi in Kansas City. Known for its "all you can eat sushi", Sushi Mido serves up some of the best rolls in KC. Not only that, but their crab rangoons are out of this world, with a healthy portion of crab, cream cheese, and onion inside each shell. The all you can eat option is right around $25 but before I was going to do that, I just wanted to order a couple rolls to see if that would be something that I would get in the future. Definitely try the dinosaur roll and the spicy girl roll! They do not disappoint. Although this restaurant is out of the way for me, I will be returning in the very near future with an empty stomach to take down some all you can eat sushi. Found this gem tucked away in Shawnee and not sure why it took me so long to come check it out. Food is so good- quality AND quantity... and there is all-you-can eat option too! Service is great guys! The owner did table touching and it was nice of him to apologize in advance, he said that they get really busy most days and peaks where the food could take time to be served. My family and I visited yesterday for Mother's Day. They were busy, but not super packed. We were seated right away. All four of us got the unlimited sushi for $25 each. BEST DECISION EVER! We decided to get 3 sushi rolls apiece so that we could sample different ones and then order more if we were still hungry. Out of all the 12 different rolls there was not a single one that wasn't delicious. Our server was also great. She kept our glasses refilled, checked on us throughout the meal, pre-bussed our table. Sushi was delicious but the reason I'm giving them a lower rating was the service. I understand they were busy but everything took them so long. Also, our waiter while he was very outgoing said a lot of inappropriate stuff to us and we were all genuinely concerned for his well-being. Quite honestly he seemed to be on something and wasn't consistent with us. This sushi joints all you can eat menu does not include any sashimi or nigiri, only rolls. They have a ton of yummy rolls to choose from and the rolls don't contain a lot of rice. One of the choices on the AYCE menu is a spider roll (aka soft shell crab roll) and it's delicious. Check them out, but go early! read more

I know what you're thinking: the quality can't be as good as a traditional sushi house, but Sushi Mido is as good as any place in Kansas City. And I'm OK with your skepticism. Heck, I was reluctant to write this review because I worry if too many people come to this place, they are going to love it too, and I'm going to have to wait hours for a table. Every time I've gone, which was before, during, and after lunch and dinner rushes, I always see a steady stream of patrons and a small army of itamaes creating delicious sushi. They have a good menu of creative and flavorful offerings, but I always go for the all-you-can-eat sushi for $24.95 per person. That option comes with two of the following sides: two crab rangoons, edamame, ginger-dressed salad, hot-and-sour soup, egg drop soup, or miso soup. I love their ginger dressing and have been trying to replicate for home use--it is a great balance of tangy and fresh--they should sell bottles of it. When ordering, they give you a sheet listing all their rolls and grouped them into veggie, cooked, fried, and raw. As you can see in the picture, they have a very robust offering of rolls and it's always difficult for me to decide which ones to order. I can almost guarantee your eyes will be larger than your stomachs, so be mindful and respectful when ordering. To avoid wasting food, Sushi Mido recommends ordering in rounds of two-to-three rolls per person. After finishing a round, you can always order more, if you are still hungry. There is a $0.75 per piece leftover charge for any unfinished sushi, which cannot be taken home. This is a good policy and prevents gluttony. I will give a hint through: when you are eating, start with the fried rolls first, because (in my opinion) they are the most difficult to eat near the end of the meal, when you are nearing capacity. After ordering, the itamaes take their time making their beautiful rolls, so be prepared to wait. After all, good things come to those who wait. And when your food arrives, you won't be disappointed; the presentation always impresses me and the rolls are always packed with colors and flavors. The fish is of high-quality and tastes delicious and the vegetables are crisp and fresh. It has always been a great experience; the servers are helpful and knowledgeable about the rolls. Fresh sushi with variety for all pallets. Raw fish, tempora, and deep fried rolls. If you prefer Asian food and not sushi this place has a selection for you as well. I give this 3 stars mostly for the wait. Because you can get all you can eat sushi for a very reasonable price you wait quite a while to get your rolls. Plan how many you will eat in advance so you order all your rolls at once. There is a charge if you don't eat all the rolls so come hungry. This is a great place if you are just getting into sushi and aren't sure of your favorite tastes. It's small restaurant and parking is limited so plan to carpool if you double date. read more

It took quite a while for our second round to be delivered, and we definitely filled up in the time it took for the second round to arrive. The strange combinations made the menu feel limited. I enjoy getting edamame, egg drop soup, and a variety of different rolls. Some of my favorite rolls to order include the batman, volcano, samurai, tornado and rainbow.
