Sushi Kuu is a fairly standard high end Japanese restaurant, of which there are MANY in Hong Kong. It is essentially Hong Kong people's favorite type of cuisine, so it's a really competitive space. The ambiance is quite nice here, so I would recommend it as a place to come after work with colleagues or with an SO or even your family. I've had a lot of things here and most things are pretty good, though fairly pricey, such as the sukiyaki, the sashimi, the sushi, the cod... the cod is probably my favorite. Recently, Sushi Kuu has seen the effects of shrinkflation. For those of you not familiar, this is kind of like inflation, however instead of increasing prices, they keep prices steady but shrink portion size. Personally, I would prefer inflation, but I kind of understand why they do this.

For starters the Tofu Salad is really worthwhile- a nice blend of east and west that includes pine nuts, micro herbs and diced avocado. The edamame is nice and hot, but there's enough for 4 in a single serving. The broiled sushi has a nice twist, offering salmon, tuna, scallop, yellowtail all with a simply seared top. The pork on rice is billed as black Japanese pork chop but is really just deep-fried pork with egg on rice- a staple of any Japanese restaurant. Fill up on sushi and order the rice in soup with salmon or plum. A great way to fill up.

We ordered a sashimi lunch set and a tempura set and man it was such a great deal! My sashimi set includes almost 10 pieces of assorted fish like yellowtail, maguro, salmon, imitation crab (don't care), but hey they put amaebi and toro on my plate too and that was quite a nice surprise! Not only the sashimi was plentiful and amazing, my set also came with the steamed egg, miso soup and some pickled vegetables! The tempura was pretty good too and I liked the fried fish, very flavorful and tender! The sashimi set cost around $220 and the tempura a little less than $200. The prices are reasonable for the portions and the quality! Very great deal! Just come here earlier and be prepared to wait.

One of the waitress approached us and apologized that they were busy and no seats available. She walked around and came back to tell us that there should be seating at 9pm, and so we told her, "no problem, we will be back then." We walked around the block and went to the mall to kill time. When we got back about 8:50pm, we waited another 15 minutes, which was fine. We could tell it was busy and every seat in the place was taken (they had group celebrating a birthday-- they offer birthday cake!) By the time we were seated, half the place was getting up to leave. Every staff member starts their sentence with "I am sorry.." which they have nothing to be sorry for!-- but just could be their way of being polite. The waitress who took our order was an older lady. She's the one who approached us when we first arrived, who seated us, and took our order. Her English was pretty good, with a very thick accent (of course) but you can understand her. If you couldn't she will repeat herself or try to say it in a different way. She offered many great selections!-- including which needs to be dipped into their special soy sauce and regular soy sauce. We had sashimi of: baby tuna, tuna, salmon, sea urchin, yellowtail.. and a few others I can't remember. And one tuna roll. Their wasabi is delicious! Everything is fantastic! They offer coke, sprite, and orange juice, along with different types of alcohol. The staff is always busy, literally hurrying along. They come over and wipe down the soy sauce drops that are on the table. They switch out your plates once they start to look a little too used, and always makes sure your drinking glass is full. One of the best services I've ever had! I did have to ask for the check, but maybe they do that so you can enjoy your stay and not feel like you need to leave. Our bill was just a little under $250 USD, but that was expected with all the sushi we had, and just what we were looking for. We highly recommend this place!

The yakitori here embraces the whole bird, from thigh cuts to more adventurous bites like heart and thyroid, all charcoal grilled. Each skewer has a distinct flavor and texture. We were impressed by how each cut tasted, it's different texture and chew, winning us over to the concept. There is a strong case for their Michelin star earned in 2021, from where we were sitting. Beyond skewers, the spherical corn fritters and sweet, spicy KFC cauliflower were standout sides, and cocktails, some incorporating Japanese whisky and liqueurs, are thoughtfully crafted. The modern atmosphere, great service, and celebratory feel made for a fun and delicious night out.

Ever the explorer, I made plans with my wife to scout the area last Saturday night till we found it. That place was, indeed found- it was Firebird. And what a find it turned out to be. Even though it was super busy, we were given seats at the bar right away. The menu is a tempting mix of Teppanyaki, yakitori, sushi and rice dishes. The specialty is the chicken skewers, so we got the sampler. We also got some fresh delicious salmon sashimi, a salmon roll and some shrimp tempura. We also got the Shochu cocktails which were cold, refreshing and delicious. At one point, I asked my wife if anything that crossed her lips that evening wasn't totally fantastic. She said no, of course. This place is a real gem, all that food and two cocktails a piece was an extremely reasonable $940. Highly recommended.

The waiters lacked a little common sense and muddled up our orders quite a few times. If you have a table of five people, 3 pieces of salmon sushi is not going to be enough to fill hungry bellies. They did redeem themselves, in my books anyway, by "messing up" and bringing us two plates of volcano rolls instead of one. We happily paid. My verdict, go for the volcano roll, but it's not a high restaurant on my list to return to.

The restaurant might be on the slightly pricier side, but in my opinion it is totally worth it. 1.Food - FRESH and delicious. You can also voice out if there's any type of fish that you don't like, they will be very happy to change to something else for you. I would definitely pick this over a nice steak dinner any day. It was one of the best meal I had in 2016. A must try if you don't mind splurging. Great place to impress your date.

It's good they gave us fresh wasabi, but for this type of place it's pretty much a standard. Their rolled beef slices stuffed with vegetables were delicious but a bit underseasoned. Codfish was good but nothing stood out. Same for the fried rice. It's just when food was put in a cute, small container, and served in a fancy environment, they'll trick our brains to think they taste better, but when I thought about the actual taste, it wasn't anything special. It's cool to see the chef cooking in front of us on the teppan, but he wasn't too friendly and mostly just did his own thing and cook in silence the whole time... The staff didn't check on us regularly. It wasn't easy to track a server down. I'd say overall the food was good but nothing so special that you couldn't find in another Japanese restaurant in HK; and there are so many of them.
