We decided to sit at a table so we could order sushi as well as grilled meats. The foie gras, gindara and sushi were delicious. We had two servers who were absolutely amazing. First of all, it's in one of the most expensive malls in one of the most expensive districts in one of the most expensive places in the world (Landmark, Central, Hong Kong). Secondly, it's an amalgamation of some of the more pricey cuisines: Japanese and Tapas, or trendily known as Japas. Thirdly, it looks like a contemporary art museum. But, never would I have imagined that here, I can not only have an affordable meal, but get one of the best valued dishes I've ever had! The signature Kikusan roll: 8 pieces of tuna filled sushi roll, topped with a whole slab of uni, green onions, and lots of salmon roe. All of my favourite things in a generous quantity for HKD $68. According to today's exchange rate, that's CAD $10.94. You usually get 8 pieces of California roll at that price (Kikusan's California Roll is actually $88). The same amount of uni at a supermarket easily costs 2-3x as much. The roll itself is mild, but still flavourful. There aren't any crazy flavour bursts, but it all works together well. The uni didn't have as much uni flavour as I would've liked but hey...$68. Really. The green onions added sharpness to cut through the smooth tuna and the little exploding roe provided bursts of sweetness. The Kikusan Roll was all about balance. By contrast, the Chili Sesame & Peanut Soup Ramen with Minced Pork and Layered Pork Cutlet was very in-your-face flavour-wise, and delicious in a whole other way! The pork cutlet had a hint of sake and the spice was at a perfect level of heat. My theory is that the Kikusan Roll is one of those loss leader things because it definitely drew me to this restaurant. The strategy seems to be working well. At 12:10pm, the queue was making an S in front of the entrance. Everyone was ordering things that range from sushi to dim sum in this Asian fusion restaurant, with dishes on average ranging from $60 to well above $100. It's much easier to get in as a group of 2, so my advice would be to split up your big group if you don't mind sitting apart. They've also got a dim sum takeout counter for those not willing to battle the line. Would you come to Kikusan for the best Japanese food? No, not even close. But it's where you go when you want to impress your out-of-town, non-Japanese friends. It's where you go when you want to feel a little fancier without spending the kind of dollars you usually spend at Landmark. The sashimi was very fresh & they give you nice thick pieces. I also had the Japanese mojito which was very refreshing. When I came for dinner, it wasn't super packed yet, but my brother told me that it was extremely busy and they had to wait for a table when he went for lunch, so just keep that in mind if you have a tight schedule! Service was very straightforward and hassle-free. We ordered a fried rice, a soup, and their special buns with soy meat for two people. I've had my fair share of vegetarian Chinese food, and I can say wholeheartedly that the quality of the food here sits well on the better end! Not only was the flavor of the food quite good, it also didn't feel greasy or heavy. The customer demographic looked pretty diverse too, so I'd assume they can at least communicate with English-speakers. However, it can get a bit loud indoors! Overall our total came out to be around 250 HKD (if I remember correctly), so with tip I gave about 300 HKD. Super affordable, tasty option -- and I've heard that their lunch specials are even cheaper! The restaurant is also very close to the Ding Ding bus stop that took us back to the train we took from the airport, so it was quite convenient. But, for HKD 50, this meal is a steal. A lot of people chose to order a-la-carte, which looked so much more appealing :p The celery tofu stir fry was simple - no frills, probably just salt and a touch of pepper. The mushroom, lotus roots and that soft tofu fried balls had some soy sauce, I'd guess. The tofu was very tender. And a simple and non-standout taste. What I didn't like was the texture of the pumpkins. Now, it's confirmed that I don't like this kind. It's probably Chinese. There's only a few vegetables I don't like and this might be one of them. I'm fond of other types of pumpkins, including the Indian kinds, but this one had a texture I didn't quite appreciate. I'm one lucky girl to be celebrating my birthday here with my dearest family, and didn't have to pay a dime (heh). They only serve one tasting menu here, so you don't get to choose what you're having, but you do get to choose what sake to accompany your meal with. You also get to choose the exact sake cup to drink it from. There are 8 savory courses and 2 sweet ones. Quite a few of them are out of this world, including a dish with fresh figs, topped with foie gras, wasanbon sugar and sesame cream, which my dad raved on and on about for weeks after, delicious sous vide wagyu beef that melts in your mouth, and a luxurious chawanmushi (steamed egg) topped with crab and crab roe. The desserts are mindblowingly good as well. There is a candy-shelled pear with pear jam inside, all frozen with liquid nitrogen, and tasted like fresh pears in falling snow. The other dessert is chestnut ice cream topped with shaved chestnut -- as the biggest chestnut fan on Earth this was my absolute favourite, and while I was quite full I still devoured it all. The meal ended with some matcha and sweets, and was such a perfect ending to a perfect meal. I would totally come here again, if only it wasn't so expensive as well. My parents had actually done all the ordering of the food from the menu, so I couldn't tell you price-wise how affordable it was. But I do know that we would definitely return for dim sum if we come back to this neighborhood in the future. It is located in a shopping center.

The location is quite good in the quieter area of the Minden Avenue. The place is bright with at big window front. The setting is simple and rustic. Service is efficient, friendly and knowledgeable. They have a decent drinks list including sochu, beers and different mixed drinks. The food menu is extensive including some really good salads as well as rice and noodle dishes. The salads are fresh and crisp, the dressings tasty not overpowering. I love their avocado and their potato salad! Their uni rice is amazing, the spicy ramen as well! If you like plain rice to go with your meal, they use rice from Japan cooked to perfection! The star here of course is the meat especially the beef. The different cuts either come from the US or Japan. You get them marinated or en nature. The quality of all cuts is superb. My favorites include the Angel karubi, Diamond Karubi, seared beef on uni and the wagyu ribeye. The ribeye you have to order in advance and they put on a good show presenting this cut. A few waiters will loudly introduce this when delivering to your table and they will teach you some Japanese words to loudly response. As many guests order this, the restaurant will not be quiet at any time making a buzzing, fun atmosphere. Depending on the cuts you order, they will cook the beef to perfection for you at the table. Imho this restaurant is not overly expensive. You can spend below HK$ 200 per head including drinks if you don't go for the best cuts. Even if you do that you end up with around HK$ 400 per head which is worth every penny. I'm a huge fan of this place.
