The best place to eat in Salisbury. We come all the time and have never had a bad experience! The sushi is fresh and delicious every time

I cannot complain about the sushi because I did not eat it. After 1/2 hour or more at the sushi bar with not even so much as a hello from the sushi chefs, I left. Offered to pay for the saki which was declined. Tried to explain that you do not need to, in a sushi restaurant, serve each table or patron everything on their order all at once. Better, when professed busy (not really that busy), to serve individual rolls or sets of pieces as they come off of the sushi knife. That's kind of how it's done in many sushi restaurants. Plus the staff and the waitresses (standing around-a lot) here are beholden to the young sushi chefs who have learned the mechanics but not the style or ethos of serving this cuisine. They were not interested in any guidance from an older patron. Yes, I'm sure it's easier for them to push one order through at a time, but that is not service. The restaurant has reasonably yummy food, but something about the place has changed in the last five years or so. It used to be filled with such ambiance and mood lighting. It really felt high class. Today when we stopped in (after making a reservation due to COVID-19), it was almost the the restaurant was little more than a dive. The tables looked like fast food tables, the decor had been pretty much all taken down, the chalkboard was empty and the pain on the walls were tacky colors and chipping. I had been thinking it immediately when we sat down and was going to wait until we left to say anything to my partner but about half way through our appetizer he finally said "Is it just me or has the veil been lifted on this place and it's just not as great as we thought it was?" It was still an okay experience because the sushi was decent but they also couldn't make the entree I went for and looked up on their Facebook page to make sure they were still serving during COVID. I've been maybe a dozen times over the last ten years but I think today may be the last time unless we see some upgrades. read more

My second time trying sushi and I love it. Last night I went with my friend and I tried two rolls. The bagel and the Mexican. Both were great but I preferred the taste of the Mexican as it had a rustic taste. I loved it especially when you put a pinch of wasabi on it. I also tried the eel what a great taste. I have to give this 4-stars just for the food but the service was horrible. Let's start with the horrible service and more onto the amazing food. We were quickly seated - our waitress said hello and didn't come back for 15 minutes. 15 minutes - she went to each of the other tables (total of 4)....I finally went to the bar and ordered two glasses of water and 2 glasses of wine. After I served my table she appeared....we quickly put our order in - we were starving and well we weren't sure if she would come back if she left our table. Let's just say the bartender finally got the point and finished our table off (thank goodness)! So for the food we started with a sampler (it was on special) and two of the special sushi rolls. This place never disappoints! So thankful my hometown has such a great little sushi spot. read more

The food was quite pricy, but good when it finally arrived, but the overall dining experience was sorely lacking. The waiter was polite and tried to be attentive, but had far too many tables to handle, and had to be reminded about bringing some drinks etc., but that's par for the course with a busy restaurant. Normally that would not have been a big deal. The main letdown was the utterly insane amount of time it took to get served the main course. From the time of order of the rolls to the delivery of the food to our table was about an hour and 10 minutes. And this was not just us, the other tables were super slow to get served as well. For the few that finished dining before us, no one was smiling as they left. The mystery in all this was how this was happening. It's a relatively small restaurant. There were about 10 tables being served by the waiter, there were 3 or 4 people in the back kitchen and 3 people up front making sushi. The manager who was mostly just standing around, and occasionally helping to deliver an order to a table here and there, should have been pitching in and assisting the poor, overburdened waiter far more than she was. It was a ridiculous level of disengagement by management. With all those people working away at the counter and in the back it's unclear what the time warp was that made practically every order take over an hour to deliver to the table other than management that is operationally incompetent. I'm not going to blame the kitchen staff, the management is responsible for how that operates. The food and drinks were good but it's never a pleasant experience to have to apologize to my guests for a place that I recommended we dine at. I will not dine there again anytime soon. read more

Granted this place is in the heart of Salisbury, you shouldn't have the highest expectations and you should also be prepared to spend a little more since fresh fish isn't really that close or abundant. all that being said, this place was great! It's a small little restaurant in the heart of downtown, cute place to walk around during the day and a quaint little place to visit at night for dinner. I went with friends had some tea and ordered the bento box which was filled with goodies! All very delicious and tasty. It was very authentic, owned by a japanese man and all the sushi was prepared by him, or so I was told. It didn't disappoint and I would be back if I was ever craving sushi in Salisbury! Best Sushi and excellent food! We have missed eating in, but carry out is always excellent. We have ordered carry-out several times since last March. Last night we all had rolls: Tophat is one our favorites, we also had Danger, Dynamite, and Mexican rolls, all also great! Always fresh and my husband always orders the Kushiyaki entree and it's excellent. Two people in our family have shellfish allergies and they always accomodate us and separate the rolls and we have never had any issues. I am giving Sushi De Kanpai a 4 star because it is one of the best sushi restaurants in town. However, I was very disappointed tonight because we went and there was a wait. We wanted sushi from here so we were willing to wait the 20 minutes for our table. While we were waiting, the hostess came out and told us they had limited sushi rice and they were not willing to make more so that we could enjoy a nice sushi meal. The hostess was very nice when she came out and explained it. We ended up having to leave and go to another restaurant which was very disappointing because our heart was set on Sushi De Kanpai. I ordered the sashimi deluxe zero taste poorly displayed and i could only stomach half of it, My husband's was not much better. OMG the salad was head lettuce and tomatoes. This restaurant was incredibly surprising and delicious. Having lived in Japan for a couple of years, I've found it is very hard to get anywhere near the same quality nigiri here in the states. I tried the raw scallop here tonight and was blown away - it tasted just as fresh and delicious as when I had it a couple of times a week in Japan. The rolls were also delicious. A friend ordered the steak teriyaki and it looked incredible - I was too full from my own food to even try unfortunately! The tuna tostada appetizer that is their signature dish is a must try. Sushi De Kanpai, in most any other city, would be 4 stars. It wins an extra star for surviving and thriving among the dreariness that is downtown Salisbury. The sushi is very good-so much so that I can only cite one other establishment in the mid-Atlantic that I have enjoyed more. Their sake selection is outstanding. I was particularly surprised to note the variety on the menu. Granted, most American Japanese restaurants, while serving sushis, are not at all the dedicated sushi-yas of Japan. But Sushi De Kanpai offered such rareties as chowan mushi and okonomiyaki. You just don't see these dishes served in many American establishments-especially in Salisbury, MD! read more

This is a nice sushi place for the Salisbury area. The decor is nice mix of modern and traditional, with a general clean look and feel. Located on the historic downtown plaza, it gives the restaurant a quiet and intimate feeling - not like eating in a strip-mall. There's a public parking lot less than one block away, and lots of street parking in the evening after work hours. The restauant seems to seat about 50 people, 70 at most - so it's small and comfortable, but not cramp. The menu is made of the pretty standard rolls, nigiri, and sashimi, with a few "house rolls" on special. The sushi plates and meals ranged from about $18 - $55 per person, along with an a-la-carte ordering system for rolls and nigiri. For my wife and me, our total bill came to about $75 before tip (which included one glass of wine and one beer). Oh, that reminds me - they have Kirin beer (no Sapporo as of my last visit) and a small selection of white and red wines. The sushi came out fast; but we were the only people in the restaurant. The sushi is presented a little "prettier" than other local sushi places, and the taste was defintely above average. I went a-la-carte with orders of the standard nigiri (salmon, yellow tail, red snapper, eel, tuna, etc...) along with two house-rolls (eel and tropical). The nigiri was fresh, good texture, well cut and nicely garnished. The rolls were pretty good... but nothing exceptional or notable about the rolls. My wife had a sushi platter which consisted of a mix of nigiri and some rolls, along with a salmon roe sushi. She was very satisfied with her meal. Over all... I'd definitely come back, but it's a little pricey for me to go on a regular basis, so I'll get my regular sushi fix elsewhere, and come back here when I'm feeling more special. read more

If you have to choose between the supermarket sushi and this place definitely go with the supermarket offering. The service was atrocious - slow, inattentive, and just blatantly lazy. We walked into a half-empty restaurant 45 minutes before closing and were notified that they are very busy now and it will be at least 15 minutes before we get seated. I wish we just listened at that point and walked out. If the residents of Salisbury consider the sushi here worthy of five stars, as many reviews suggest, then I am afraid to think of what they would consider mediocre sushi. Perhaps just holding chopsticks provides so much excitement to the local townsfolk that they are already all agog for the "authenticity" of this place! The fish is stale, dry, smells like fish, and the sushi rolls are just miserable. The "Chef's Special" roll for 13 dollars was nothing more than a yellow tail and rice roll with gobs of mayo smeared all over it. I always wondered who uses those 5 gallon jugs of may in Costco. Now i know. This experience carries the dubious enjoyment of an ethnographic expedition into some third world shtihole. Think of it as eating cockroaches in Thailand or chicken intestines in Vietnam. Now you know what the god-fearing, flag-waving half of this country considers to be "Amazing" sushi. Better yet. Just take my word for it and go to Applebees. read more

Sushi De Kanpai is one of my favorite sushi bars in the area, and surprisingly, we have quite a few. While small, the restaurant is well decorated and the ambiance is quite nice. You have a choice of sitting at the sushi bar to watch your order being prepared, or sitting at a table. We usually get a table when we go, especially when we're there with a larger group. The menu is large and varied, with lots of choices for those in your group who may not be so fond of sushi. Their teriyaki is tasty and light, their dumplings flavorful, and their miso soup delicious. The sushi itself is the star, however. Their fish always tastes extremely fresh and they are careful to play up the natural flavors. They have many creative and interesting choices when it comes to rolls, and they always use real blue crab in their crab rolls. I especially recommend the Downtown Roll. My only complaint would be an overuse of cucumber, of which I'm not very fond. They will leave out the cucumber is you ask, though... assuming they remember. The service is usually very good, even if the waitresses aren't always well versed in the roll ingredients or that night's specials. At least they're personable and always willing to go get the answers to your questions. read more

We stop at Sushi de Kanpai almost every time we drive to the shore. It's my first taste of leaving the city behind--laid back, friendly, and good value. I prefer to sit at the sushi bar to watch master sushi chef Katsumi practice his craft. As with any artist, he puts as much emphasis on presentation as on ingredients. This is a really cute sushi place in Downtown Salisbury. That alone creates a quaint ambiance that can't be recreated in the newer and more sterile areas of town. Inside, the decor is very nice but quite simple. The restaurant is small, but didn't feel cramped to me... but then again I ate fairly late after peak dinner hours. The food here was really good. We got some edamame which weren't overly salty like at some places as an appetizer. For our entrees, I got a selection of sushi and an angelkiss roll and my boyfriend got a sampling of sashimi. We were both very happy with the freshness and quality of the fish we got, and my boyfriend's sashimi was especially nicely presented. My angelkiss roll was truly a work of art. The service was attentive without being overbearing. I really enjoyed my experience here, but would have liked to see a larger variety of fish offerings on the sushi and sashimi menu like they have at Ikebana. read more

My girlfriend got the Veggie combo which was several pieces of vegetarian sushi and 5 veggie rolls. I was afraid I was going to have to eat it all, because while she'll try new things (sometimes), she usually doesn't go for them. She really liked the sushi, but left the rolls for me. If you're not interested in sushi, they have a large menu of non-sushi items as well. The green tea is very smoky, so we didn't care for that, but everything else gets an A from us.
