I was having real difficulty with my left foot and bunion over the last 2 years. It got to a point that my gait was off and I was in great pain- wishing it would magically go away. I could not do the real hiking trails I loved and going to the gym was a problem. My friend recommended Dr. Schneidermesser. She recommended that I have a lapiplasty surgery which has literally been life changing. I had never had a surgery before and was super nervous. She discussed the procedure thoroughly with me and the realistic recovery time. She took before and after x-rays to show me the healing process. Well, my surgical scar is paper thin and I have full movement in my entire foot and toes!!. I am back in gym class doing jumping jacks and planking 6 months after the surgery. Would have loved to give zero stars, better yet, negative stars, but obviously not an option. I truly advise you to be careful before going to Dr. Schneidermesser. The doctor, in trying to treat a wort, at one of (turned out to be the last) appointment, burnt a large hole in my toe from what i assume was an overapplication of acid. I didn't know this was what happened until I went to get my foot treated by a different doctor. (He was horrified by what he saw.) I was in much pain after the appointment, and I knew something wasn't right. We tried calling the doctor, every single phone call was ignored. My assumption is that the doctor knew what she did and instead of owning up to her malpractice, she hoped I would go away or disappear. I sent a few emails- all were ignored. Completely unacceptable, unprofessional, horrifying behavior. In short, straight up malpractice. read more

I do like the doctor. I think she's kind and smart. But the front desk staff are so rude and cold and snarky. I'm now crying in my car after this latest visit. I saw this Dr. for foot surgery many years ago. What should have only been a bunionectomy ended up being a lot of unnecessary toe straightening surgery. Since, I have experienced misaligned toes and endless foot trauma (now affecting my knees and back). I returned to this Dr. once I regained insurance, and trusting that maybe she could correct the botched job. More trauma ensued in questionable procedures. She's a nice lady and I trusted her professionalism and abilities (never again). Now I have a new podiatrist and can see how cut-eager this Dr. was. She also lacked with essential following up care with PT and general post surgery care which cause excessive scar tissue and misalignment. If I could turn back time, I would have never chosen Dr. Schneidermesser or approved the surgery she suggested. I would only recommend this Dr. for topical care, nothing more. She's a nice enough lady, unfortunately my feet/body suffered deeply under her care. Regretfully. read more

I've done quite a bit of research on podiatrists and had in mind what I was looking for regarding a physician and the treatment of my ailment. When I came upon Dr. Susan Schneidermesser, to say simply "impressed" would be a VAST understatement in her abilities as a podiatrist. Whilst my issue is quite common, it was misdiagnosed (by many others in her field) for decades. My ailment was, what I thought to be, athletes foot, fungus nail & excessive hard skin buildup (that no pedicure or pumice stone would help). Needless to say this, for a woman is quite embarrassing. She is not only knowledgeable but patient and diligent. Dr. Schneidermesser's technique and manner made me feel as though there is a light @ the end of this long dark, dreary and embarrassing tunnel. Since being a patient of Dr. S' , for only a few short months (compared to the years with her other colleagues) it has been 26 years since I have felt my own hardwood floors against the skin on my feet. After being a patient of hers (yes, I feel the need to repeat this) for only a few short months, I can HAPPILY, PROUDLY and LOUDLY say "I am woman of 41 and I finally have FEET! - two beautiful, happy and ready for OPEN TOE, SLING BACK, FLIP FLOP sandaled feet this coming summer!" Amazing doctor. Friendly, professional, skilled, kind, straightforward, great! And the staff is wonderful as well. The office manager, let me wait for an opening to get my ingrown toenail removed. (I know, ewwwww.) So I waited for almost two hours. But that's okay; I didn't have an appointment and my toe was NASTY. It seemed like the waiting room moved pretty quickly. No one was complaining too much, and it was mainly ladies of a *certain* age, so that was pretty amazing. Once I got in, the doctor took a quick look at my toe. Took a look at my infant in the carseat, and asked if I was nursing. Uh oh. The Lydocaine (is that what the injection is?) doesn't go well with nursing. I was afraid she'd say to put it off until I stopped nursing. By that time I'd have an ingrown nail climbing up my calf! Instead, she suggested doing it without a numbing agent. I jumped on it. Brave as I am. Well, that, and she promised it would take all of 35 seconds. She was right, and once it was over it was no worse than the worst of the ingrown nail. She wrapped me up and suggested Bacitracin and a band-aid for three days. I was out the door less than 15 minutes after I entered the examination room. See why I love her? read more

Dr. Schneidermesser really is the best. It's so rare that you get to say that about a doctor these days. I went to 8 specialists before anyone could tell me that I had a text book case of plantar faciitis. I went home and looked it up online and it explained all my foot pain to a tee. Dr. Scheidermesser treated me with one shot of a corticosteroid which she said she didn't typically give on the first visit. She said I was in so much pain for so long that she thought I might want to consider it. She explained why she thought this in plain English and didn't pressure me into it in the slightest. I, of course, jumped at the prospect of pain relief anywhere in my body (I've had unexplained chronic pain for 6 months now). My foot problems were completely better after 10 days of simple exercises and icing my feet daily. Got foot pain? Go see Susan Schneidermesser ASAP. Excellent bedside manner and a good, smart brain on that one. read more

I was treated unsuccessfully for a toe problem plaguing me for the last 5 to 6 months. When the problem returned and I was incapable of mobility, I called the doctor's office. I asked for a call back to discuss what I can do at home to relieve the pain prior to making another appointment. Her nurse took the message. That was a Friday morning. I did not hear from the doctor and had to wait until Tuesday (President's holiday on Monday), when I called about 9 am. The nurse took a message and stated she was with a patient, but that she would give Dr. Schneidermesser the message. That was the last I heard from the office! So, I fired the good doctor and her nurse and I will see another Park Slope podiatrist - Dr. Amar. read more

We have never waited long for an appointment and her office is wheelchair accessible though the ramp is steep. The office staff is very helpful if needed with the ramp. She was thorough in her assessment and diagnosis of my mother's foot condition, and presented her with detailed information on all her treatment options (she's not the easiest patient to deal with either!). my mom chose surgery sans the all too common coercion in these situations, and Dr. Schniedermesser's work, post operative care, and willingness to avail herself to questions throughout my mother's recovery demonstrated what a caring empathetic provider she is. I had a large lump on a vein on the top of my foot and it was a painful so I called the office to make an appointment. Doc was fully booked since she was leaving for vacation in a few days but I was told she would call me. A few hours later I received a message to come in the next day before regualr hours started and she would see me. There was a short wait which I managed to tolerate quietly despite being of a "certain" age. She diagnosed the problem and told me what to do to treat it. She was very gentle and informative, wish all docs were like her. read more

Her level of compassion, kindness and professionalism is absolutely remarkable. The very first minute you meet her you can tell she actually cares about you, and that makes a huge difference for me. I had surgery with her right after hurricane Sandy (she decided not to postpone it!) and once it was over, my husband tried to find a cab to take me home-it was impossible... the whole city was a real mess. well is it 9 weeks on Monday (June 10th) since Dr. Schneidermesser did my surgery. I had a titanium joint implant put in. She needed to take out my arthritic corroded big toe joint and put the implant in. I can't believe it every time that I look down at my foot and see that it now looks like a normal foot is supposed to look - no bumps, no overlapping - just a straight big toe! I think that people have to understand that surgery, especially when it involves bones, will require healing time. And when it is your foot, it is not like you can say "oh well I will just use my other one", but after the first few days I was up and about and within 2 weeks was transitioning back into a regular shoe. At this point I am back to doing a speed walk in the morning around the loop in Prospect Park, working all day and doing all the things I was doing before the surgery, but with a new toe, that bends instead of the one I had before that did not bend at all due to the arthritis. Once I am totally healed I am going to do the other foot. I think Dr. S is the best! read more

I wanted to share another wonderful experience after seeing Dr. Susan today. I'm challenged with a torn plantar plate which is not an easy situation. However, Dr. Susan has the knowledge, caring, kindness, and patience to work with me using conservative treatment to help, hopefully, to avoid having surgery. Giving my foot the time to heal. This is the key word here "healing." Working in the health field myself what you will find with Dr. Susan is a person who genuinely cares about your healing. She spends an enormous amount of time with you and has a heart of gold! She is a rare find! I repeat walk, hop, skip, crawl if you have to but go see Dr. Susan you will be so happy that you did! I live in the Crown Heights area and would rather not reveal my name since this is a small community. Their practice began sending me messages that said they never saw me when in fact, they did! I think it's a terrible practice to mock someone for writing their true opinion when it comes from the heart. I find this doctor or whoever is responding on her behalf to be a loathsome individual. Short version--she's a great doctor and surgeon! Long version? Here you go: I first saw Dr. Schneidermesser in 2010 and was successfully treated for peroneal tenosynovitis. At that time we discussed my bunionettes, and she advised that as long as I could find shoes that weren't painful, it would be advisable to see if surgery could be avoided. She explained what the surgery would entail, and that it was always wise to opt for the non-surgical option if possible. Over the next few years I saw her for broken toes, tendonitis, and corns, all of which she diagnosed and treated expertly. By 2015 it was clear I would need the bunionette surgery. Before the surgery several well-meaning friends told me of unsuccessful results they had experienced when they had the surgery. I told Dr. Schneidermesser my fears, and she held my hand and said "they didn't have me as a doctor, did they? You're going to be fine." Well, I was. The surgery went beautifully and there were no problems with recovery. Early in 2016 I started experiencing pain in the ball of my foot that was preventing me from any activity that required flexing--gardening, yoga, climbing stairs. Dr. Schneidermesser diagnosed avascular bone necrosis in two metatarsal heads, which was confirmed by an independent MRI. Again, she did not rush to surgery but prescribed a cam boot to see if it would heal naturally. After eight weeks, it was clear I would need surgery to replace the metatarsal heads with titanium. This was much more frightening to me, but my confidence in Dr. Schneidermesser made all the difference. The surgery was a success and two weeks later I was walking in sneakers. Today was my six week check-up and as soon as I saw her I started crying because I was overwhelmed with emotion. I'm a very active person and it feels like she gave me my life back. She is compassionate, intelligent, funny, and a very talented surgeon. I wish all my doctors could be more like Dr. Schneidermesser. read more

I hate to do this but must relate my experience. Dr, Schneidermeser, who came highly recommended (see reviews) and has a kind and lovely manner, advised an operation for my very arthritic big toe, telling me I would be pain free and back in my shoes in two weeks. She neglected to tell me I would be in agonizing pain for two days afterwards ,to suggest crutches so I could move on the third day, or provide me with adequate pain meds: I had to ask for all of these myself.. (I was already on pain meds for back pain so she didn't think I needed any more.) I could not sleep for two nights because of the pain - OK - but I should have known that and planned for it. When I told he,r she said that people on the kind of meds I was on often did poorly with pain , implying that whatever was going on was my fault. This continued to be her attitude - she never took responsibility for my not healing. Two - then three - than four weeks later it hurt badly every time I took a step. I kept going in and she kept taking an xray and saying I was fine. Meanwhile my foot got more and more swollen and I was in more and more pain. When I told her this she asked, " Well, isnt it better than before the operation?" which showed she had not heard anything I said, as I had walked without pain before it. She dismissed my concern and told me maybe I had adhesions - and to go to rehab. I knew my foot was far too swollen and painful for that. I continued to ask for help and continued to be dismissed and treated as though I was over-reacting . (Her receptionist always sounds like it's a tremendous imposition to give you an appointment.) I feared I could never walk without pain again. After SEVEN WEEKS of this I got sick - had a fever and couldn't get out of bed for three days and my foot was even more swollen. Desperate, I went to another also highly recommended podiatrist in the area, Dr. Amar. She agreed that something was badly wrong , probably that my foot was infected and making me sick, and that I was in no shape to do rehab. She put me on a high dose of antibiotics and anti-inflamatories right away and told me to call her if I didn't feel better by the next day. I didn't need to, as by the next afternoon I no longer felt sick, and by the next day I could walk without pain. My foot is getting better every day. Now I can do rehab.if I need it, but I don't think I will. Dr. Schneidermesser looked at the x-ray and didn't listen to me. I guess she decided that since I have chronic back pain and take a narcotic for it, that I wasn't worth listening to. Thank goodness I went to Dr. Amar The experience with Dr. S was disheartening and scary. I need to share this as a warning. read more

Dr. Schneidermesser recently performed bunion surgery on my wife. From the very first appointment we knew we were in excellent hands. After the diagnosis, Dr. Schneidermesser explained why surgery would be the best option. She outlined in very easy to understand detail what the procedure entailed; from what she would be doing to the foot during the surgery, to the initial hours afterward when most problems could arise, to what my wife could expect over the next several weeks as the healing process progressed. It has been four weeks since the surgery and everything has gone exactly as Dr. Schneidermesser predicted it would and the foot is healing perfectly. The only hiccup, if you could call it that, was when my wife thought that the bandage felt a little loose. One call to Dr Schneidermesser's office and we were told to come in right away for her to look at at. She redid the bandage and sent us on our way. In addition her office is very well run. We've never waited for more than a few minutes in the waiting room and once in the "chair" never waited for more than a few minutes for Dr. Schneidermesser to come in. I'd also like to give a shout out to the Kingsbrook Jewish Medical center where Dr. Schneidermesser performed the surgery. In a city full of big name medical centers it is honestly not the first hospital you think of when you think of surgery but this is the hospital Dr. Schneidermesser is associated with (for 20+ years) and she assured us that it is an outstanding hospital. While some of the facility is physically in need of a facelift, she could not have been more right about the level of care at the hospital. Everyone there was so nice, so attentive and so caring. Neither my wife or I would hesitate to use Kingsbrook again. In conclusion I would absolutely recommend Dr. Schneidermesser to anyone. She is awesome. read more

I've had problems with my feet for years and had no luck with a podiatrist until I came to Dr Schneidermesser. I had terrible recurring pain in the ball of my left foot and often just had very sore feet. She x-rayed my left foot, diagnosed a neuroma (inflamed nerve in metatarsal region) and she gave me exercises to do to alleviate the soreness in my feet. She gave me orthotics with metatarsal cushioning in addition to the arch support ($45) and I skipped out feeling like I'd finally get some relief. I did my exercises daily which involved stretches to my very tight hamstrings and achilles tendon. I haven't heard a peep from my neuroma. I went back for a follow-up, she applied heat through some kind of laser and I was done. I just need to continue with the exercises. Very happy with my foot doctor and I know now where to go should I have further issues. read more

Follow up: A much better experience. After I left a message for the doctor and posted a review detailing what had happened, I received a call from Dr. Schneidermesser's PPW office manager, who was quite helpful and very apologetic about the unfortunate treatment meted out by the Eastern Pkwy office, which is not in fact the doctor's main office. I now have an appointment that I am confident will actually occur, and I hope to be able to post a positive review after finally meeting with the doctor in person. At this point, I am happy to say the PPW office is clearly staffed by intelligent, caring professionals--what a relief. (Wish I could say the same about Oxford's physician listings website, which is I think where it went wrong.) read more
