This place was great! Was in Barcelona on holiday with my wife, and kids ages 17 and 13. Wanted something different than tapas and found this off the beat joint. The atmosphere is chill and a bit dark (that's good as it adds to the atmosphere). No A/C inside but fans made it not hot. Granted we were there at night and it was 80 degrees. For starters we had the cheese Nan, the Pakoras (fried veggie bites), and the Paneer Tim's Skewer (fried cheese). All were delish. The cheese had a charred flavor and had a great dipping sauce, and the veggie bites tasted falafel like. You cannot go wrong with cheese Nan. For main courses we had the Tikka Masala, the Vindaloo curry, the Chicken Tikka Pizza and the buttered chicken. All were awesome but the star for me was my own Vindaloo. It was spicy and delish. You can get all dishes at your spice level, and the other family members had mild dishes. The service was a bit slow as they only had two servers who were working their butt off. We stopped here for a drink before the Sagrada Familia and it was adorable! I didn't get to try Indian food during our visit to Spain but this place smelled delicious. The little truck they have in the restaurant is a nice touch and I didn't see anything like that anywhere else. We had wine and hung out for a bit. No pressure to pay or leave which was nice. We visited this restaurant on our trip to Barcelona based on blog posts. We ordered for Papri Chaat, Paneer Makhani, Veg Kofta, Jaljeera and Mango Lassi. The Papri Chaat was very dry, more like Bhel. Paneer Makhani and Kofta were fine, but nothing special. Jaljeera was weird, Mango Lassi was good. The decor is very good. I would not recommend visiting. read more

The decor in this place is pretty good, sets up the expectation of good indian food. The place is empty and you get greeted by a host who asks if you have reservions. Not exactly a kind Of place that needs one. I placed our order and in less than 10 minutes the food came out. No way indian food is cooked in less than 10 minutes. Probably is pre made and just re heated . I ordered a chicken tikka and a butter chicken. The the color was nice but the taste was very bland, you can't taste much of the spices. Good food. Terrific service. Outstanding chic street food vibe ! We did a take out/carry out of tandoori chicken and naan (see pictures), and enjoyed the food. The chicken was very flavorful without being spicy, which we liked very much. The naan was soft and had the wonderful clay over taste. The service was quick and excellent. The staff was very friendly and welcoming, and spoke perfect English. The seating layout and the interior styling is just so fun (see pictures). Would be great to hang out on the couch and enjoy a drink... Good location too just a block from Passeig de Gracia You can tell this place was done with care and love! I liked the Bollywood environment surrounding with movie posters in the restaurant. It feels very happy and exciting to see Indian restaurant in Barcelona!! It is very colorful with street truck set up for bar. The service was very good. The menu actually looked like it was a newspaper from India. If I could numerically give this restaurant a negative number, I absolutely would. I went with my parents in hopes for having a relaxing night with some good food. When we got to the restaurant, 3 tables were filled with every other table open and the chef (visible from where we were standing) just lounging around waiting. The guy up front saw us, literally had us standing for five minutes without a smile, a hello, or even a word to us that he would get to us shortly. The attitude, crudely put, sucks! The environment and attitude of the staff has much to be improved. Or is it because we were people of color. You would think an Indian restaurant wouldn't behave in such a racial manner. Every Indian restaurant I have eaten at in Barcelona has been very uninspiring. Surya Pau Claris is no different. The decor in the restaurant is inviting. The location is convenient and easily reachable by public transportation. The wait staff was friendly and helpful. I started out by ordering a chai and some papadum. The chai was bland and completely lacked the taste of cardamom. It tasted like black tea with milk in it. The papadum was on point. It was crispy and flavorful, but not oily. For my main dish I ordered lamb saag with bismati rice. The rice was cooked perfectly, but the saag... well it was saad. The consistency of the saag was acceptable, but the the taste was not. It lacked taste and was completely devoid of any kind of spice. Normally when ordering a saag, I expect to be asked the level of spice I wish for. It did not happen (and to be honest I forgot to request it). But even without any spice to it, the dish was utterly bland. A good saag should be flavorful even if it has no spice to it. This one was not. My friend ordered the chicken tikka masala and frankly it tasted too sweet for my likes. She seemed satisfied enough with it that she took the leftovers home. Finally I ended the meal with kulfi ice cream. This was by far the best part of the meal. It was heavenly. The cardamom really jumped out with every bite of the ice cream. It was nice to end the meal on a high note. Overall, Surya Pau Claris was nothing to be excited about. I had expected to have a good traditional Indian meal and left disappointed. Would I return here? Perhaps, but only for the kulfi ice cream. My search for a good Indian restaurant in Barcelona continues. read more

First of all, I'm from California (los Angeles) secondly I eat Indian food at least once a month. I came here with my mom (Indian food is her favorite). We have had Indian food from all the west coast, New York and London. The food was so tasteless. Curry? It tasted more like ketchup with Tabasco. Lamb? Where was the lamb? We happened to stumble upon this place walking home to our hotel one night. I did a little research on Yelp and TA and we decided to pop in later in the week for a bite. With the winter weather - this was definitely the perfect meal to warm you up and make you feel right at home again. We ordered the veggie kati roll, butter chicken, garlic naan, bhel puri, mango lassi and red wine. The food was absolutely solid and blew my taste buds away. The portions were perfect and plenty for both of us. We definitely left the restaurant stuffed. The services was fast, friendly and prompt. My lunch experience with Surya was mixed: decent food, strong drinks, mediocre service, questionable bill. The food: My vegetarian daal tasted fresh and looked beautiful but was extremely bland compared to the Indian food I've had elsewhere. I realize that they have a disclaimer on their menu stating that their food is not spicy, but this was still a disappointment. The drinks: I ordered a gin and tonic, and the drink I received was nearly as large as my head and STRONG. The cocktail menu seemed exorbitantly overpriced but, given the size of the drinks, ended up being fairly reasonable. Also, my friend's Pink Lady was super delicious. The service: Our waitress was pleasant enough and spoke perfect English, which was helpful because my Spanish is mediocre at best (and my Catalan is nonexistent.) The pace of service was very slow, but I've come to expect that in Barcelona. My biggest problem with Surya came when it was time to pay the bill. I'm studying abroad, and my school gifted my group with Cheque Gourmet vouchers for food. Upon entering Surya, we asked the hostess if they accepted Cheque Gourmet, showing her the physical vouchers to confirm that she understood exactly what we were asking. She told us they accepted them, so we sat down to eat. When we went to pay, however, the man at the register refused to take our vouchers. We explained that the hostess told us they were accepted, and he replied that she is new and was confused. I understand that mix ups happen, but we ended up with a very unexpectedly expensive lunch tab and nothing but a half hearted apology. We would have argued against paying the full tab had we not been pressed for time. This completely soured what could have been a lovely lunch. read more

Very well done interior to resemble a food-truck/dhaba type setting. Servers knew english, very friendly and efficient. We ordered paneer tikka masala, dal tadka, and chapatis. The flavours were good but the chef definitely seemed to have taken liberties in cross-pollinating the masalas from different dishes. But I'm not complaining for the effort that was put in to give us a decent tasting Indian meal in Barcelona! Prices were reasonable. Below average extreme disappointment. Came all the way here from NY was hoping for some delicious authentic Indian food but got bland over priced food instead. The Curry's don't come with rice you have to pay extra for it. The chicken tikka roll was super bland and surprisingly sweet even though I requested for it to be spicy. And the papri chat has no papri in it and was covered in sauce to the point of extreme soggyness. The restaurant has no air conditioner so eating this food in 100 degree weather was not pleasant what so ever. They charged me 3 euro for a bottle of water and on my way out they asked me to return the water bottle - I said I paid for it but they insisted the bottle belonged to them. Craving for Indian food in Barcelona leg of our Spain trip led us to Surya restaurant and boy what a delight the food here was. Ordered coffee which was good. Vada Pav was excellent, tasted brilliant with the three sauces. Would definitely recommend the Vada Pav from here. Then finished off with bhel puri which was also a good dish. I had to edit my review based on our second visit to Surya. The first time we went, We went during lunch as we just so happened to be strolling by in the neighborhood. My husband and I ordered chicken tikka tandoori, papdi chaat, naan, rice and veg makhani which were all SO good. The chicken was moist and tender paired with an awesome mint chutney. And the veg Makhani had an assortment of veggies cut up in the right proportions with this amazing spicy/sweet curry sauce. Our second visit was during dinner on a Saturday night and it was a complete bust. We ordered Chicken Tikka Masala for our curry and 2 naans along with the veg platter. The curry and veg platter were good, but the naan was thin and crispy. Also the cocktails were terrible-we ordered the bloody Mohini and Spicy Flamenco; neither my husband or I cared for it. Actually, I only drank 2 sips of my cocktail and just couldn't drink any more of it. Having said that, the price for each cocktail was 10 Euros--much pricier than even the better places we've had drinks at. Service was not that great, however this is most of Spain; it would have been nice if the waitress had at least asked why I didn't drink my cocktail as she was cleaning our table. Great Indian Food! I am from the Western US, and like spicy food (but still be able to taste the food). The waiter gave me a funny look when I said I wanted an "8" spice level, telling me the spice level is Indian not Spanish..., I settled on a "6" which was almost perfect! It's perfect for ppl like me who love indian food but don't deal with spicy things very well.
