For some reason, this Surin just does not seem to have very good service. The man and I had lunch here today, he ordered the cashew new tofu and I the massaman chicken. Of course, the coconut soup that comes before the meal was delicious. His tofu was good as usual. I had never had massaman before, but apparently I do not like it. It smells funny and tastes funny. Maybe it is the fish sauce. But i took one bite and almost barfed. I pushed my plate away and didn't touch it again. Our server, could have made a few extra bucks for the restaurant, seeing as how we had a coupon for a free meal. I would have gladly ordered something else. But we never saw the server again until he asked me if I wanted a box. But, considering he didn't even ask us if we wanted anything to drink, I am not surprised. The worst Thai food in town, served by the most rude and unprofessional waiters (while waitresses are always great!). If there was a book chapter on how to repel valuable customers... this business would write the introduction and conclusion paragraphs. I didn't want to go back there anymore but a colleague's of mine had a coupon he wanted to use so I joined with good faith. When folks are visiting from out of town, Surin West is always at the top of my "places to take them" list. Since it's located in Five Points, I can kill two birds with one stone and let them see this area of town, while enjoying a great meal. I usually start out with the crispy squid, crab angels, or some light sushi. All of these are great. For my main course, my favorites are Thai barbecue chicken, the spicy beef salad, spicy beef noodle, or sushi. If you like spice, the salad is the hottest thing on the menu. It's much spicier than its cousin, the noodle dish. I've heard people complain about the sushi. I'll admit that I'm no connoisseur, but it's always been great for me. read more

You could make at home. Flavors are average Thai. Ingredients are cheap. Sub par. Basic 3. Service- Barely better than average. Not friendly. They are simply there to take the order. Nothing more. Surin is one of my standard places in Birmingham. They are genuinely the restaurant that made me LOVE sushi. All locations are different from one another. But this is the fanciest of the three. So the roll that made me a sushi obsessor is the Super Crunch. It is INCREDIBLE. So good that you have to try it with anything you get. But I have seriously never had anything bad here. The Basil rolls are a good soft noodle roll. The Pad Thai is some of the best I have had. That is a great common dish that my wife and I can share. The lunch special is one of the best deals in town. You get a dish, plus some of the coconut-tofu soup. Note: I hate coconut. I hate tofu. But this soup is the bomb.com/incredibleness. One of my favorite in town. The only reason I tried it was because of the lunch special. And I had a friend I trust highly recommend it. Now when I go for dinner where the soup doesn't come with entrees, I still order it by the mass quantity. For the lunch along with this great soup I LOVE the chicken noodle bowl. Can be pricey, but the food has always been excellent. Service can be a little spotty at times, but is usually alright. They have a very interesting drink menu for those interested in cocktails. I hadn't had Thai food in a while, so I was excited to try this place out when visiting Birmingham recently. Surin is located close to downtown in a hip area filled with restaurants and bars... from the outside, it looks like a pretty cool place. I sat at the bar and ordered a Sapporo, the curry pot stickers and the pad thai. Before any of the meal came out, they brought a complimentary stuffed fried wonton immersed in a pepper jelly sauce... which I thought was terrible. It had a frozen taste to it, like it was packaged or frozen before being heated up and served. It was not a good preview for the food that I actually ordered. The curry pot stickers were pretty good, but again, had a weird taste... like they were in plastic packaging or something before they were cooked... hard to describe, just not a fresh taste. I ordered the pad thai sans peanuts, but of course, it came with what seemed like extra peanuts. I refuse to send food back to the kitchen for fear of a vindictive chef, so I just ate it. I didn't love it, thanks to the peanuts, but feel that it would only have been ok even if it came out as ordered. The flavors just didn't impress. BOTTOM LINE: Very disappointed with the taste of everything I ordered... it's unlikely that I will return. read more

I've come here with a bit of frequency. I always get the fresh basil rolls and the spicy beef salad. I tried something different today but not much different. I got the spicy beef noodles dish and I'm equally impressed with the meal! The basil rolls have me in a chokehold, they are so good. I love Thai food and was really excited when someone in our group suggested we go to Surin West for dinner. They assured me it was an excellent Thai restaurant. So, the place had a nice atmosphere and our service was pretty good. They had good prices on wines-by the glass. I had Tuna Sashimi as an appetizer and it was quite good. (Never had a suhsi appetizer at a Thai restuarant before, but what the heck, I love tuna sashimi.) However, the "Thai" food itself was disappointing. I ordered the Penang Curry which is normally one of my favorites. But this one was not spicy or flavorful enough for my taste. After dinner we were going to order dessert and I asked if they could make Mango Sticky Rice (which is one of my favorite desserts at traditional Thai places) and the server just looked confused as if she had never heard of such a thing. That's just sad. :-( I think they Americanized it too much so it would suit local tastes. I also thought they try too hard to be all things to everybody... too many dishes that are generic Asian. I really had the weirdest experience here. The food wasn't bad but the server was. So I ask the server what is vegetarian on the menu since everything looked like it had meat. He tells me most things can be made vegetarian but they put a sauce on some of the food that has a little bit of fish on it. I'm just like I don't eat fish because the whole animal thing... I don't think he understood because he brought it up again later. So I decided on a stir fry and they had two options: one was a medley of veggies with Thai sauce and the other was just broccoli and mushrooms with a brown sauce. I ask about the difference in the sauces- apparently they're the same? And I ask about the broccoli and mushroom dish and he tells me that one comes with the same veggies as the other one? Then why say you have two different dishes when they're both the same?!? I ordered a dirty martini that had my money's worth of vodka, but definitely a little more alcohol than I would like. Had a procedure that made it illegal and dangerous for me to drive for 24 hours so I woke up starving. I made an order for delivery in about 60-70 minutes. I waited in the cold on my porch at the appointed time for my order delivery in vain. Come to find out my order was canceled by the restaurant or delivery service and neither one valued me enough to call me so I could make other arrangements for dinner. It's been four days and my money still hasn't been credited back to my account. Delivery. Com thought $5 should be acceptable for their bad business practices. If they don't want to deliver to my location, don't accept my order and debit money from my account and them just ignore me. Beware because it to can happen to your order. I would rate this as middle of the road sushi. It was just ok. The crab angles are super delicious with the slightly spicy sweet and sour sauce. The service was good and the food came pretty quick. We ordered sweet and sour chicken, spicy tuna roll, spicy himachi roll, wasabi maki roll and a yummi yummi roll. They were not the best rolls I have ever had but I would say the wasabi maki came out on top. The yummi yummi roll had WAY too much cream cheese in it. I've been to this establishment many times, but never have I not received food until this past Saturday. After I ordered a very simple bagel roll with friends, my friend's cooked dinner came at an expected length of time... no bagel roll for me. I asked the server, maybe 35min after the order, when mine would be coming. He stated the kitchen was backed up. Asked again maybe 10min later, he said it was ready. After an hour cancelled the order. The restaurant wasn't packed. I didn't eat. I mentioned this to the manager at the host station as I left, and got a basic apology. Nothing more. We had ordered two rolls and from what I can see we were only served one roll but we paid for two. I waited for the second platter to appear but it never happened. Had lunch here. Very nice decor and helpful staff. I had the lunch special chicken noodle bowl. Very savory broth and served with generous portion of grilled chicken. Comes with an equally tasty cup of coconut mushroom soup. This (and most other lunch entrees) was $8. Service: A+ Food: C- I REALLY wanted to like this place, especially because of the impressive makeover they recently went through and so many of my friends being fans. Alas, they fell below my expectations. We were having a surprise birthday party for a friend's 30th in the back party room. Scheduling it was very easy and only required a phone call with the date, time and number of people attending. I was a bit nervous that everything would be ready but was pleasantly surprised that the room was setup and we had a waiter ready to go. I believe his name was Philip and he was absolutely lovely. He was very attentive to our needs for the birthday party and our regular food service. He kicked everything off by asking what I needed to make this happen and then proceeded to take everyone's drink orders and inform us of the specials. I decided to go with his recommendation of the Yummi Yummi Roll, add avocado. This roll is flash fried with cream cheese, salmon, tuna, and yellow tail which is served with a seaweed salad and Yummi sauce. Props once again to Philip because he kept the drinks coming which is difficult for a party of 15. It didn't take long at all for my food to arrive. I LOVED the seaweed salad because it was so refreshing and had a light and clean taste. However, I wasn't really a fan of the Yummi Yummi roll. The combination of flavors was good and I actually appreciated the lightly friend exterior and the warm texture the flash frying created. What I didn't like was the amount of cream cheese in the roll. It had so much cream cheese that it nearly overpowered everything else and made finishing the roll VERY difficult. I'll be back to give Surin another try, mostly because of the great service and location but for now it's just a "meh" for me. read more

There was an awesome yelp coupon deal for this place and I hadn't been here in at least a year. My partner and I ordered a Chicken Masaman and a Pad Thai respectively. Previous reviews are very accurate regarding the temperature of the food. Both dishes just seemed barely warm despite just coming out of the kitchen shortly after we ordered. I did personally enjoy the taste of both though and we ended up finishing both dishes. We also shared an order of nigiri eel which was delicious! I ordered a personal salmon sashimi (comes with two cuts) and I will say I was slightly annoyed that the cuts were shallower than most places for the same price. Nevertheless, I ate them and enjoyed them greatly. We ended our course at this place with a brownie crumble cake topped with ice cream which was amazing! It's a much bigger dessert than you expect! Service was awesome. Our waiter did everything perfectly and I honestly could not think of a way he could improve. I give a 5/5 to service and a 2/5 to food. The main reason I give a 2/5 to food is that I got food poisoned from, without a doubt, the salmon sashimi. I would caution traversing this place as a sushi restaurant; it's a much better Thai restaurant and I would recommend sticking to the curries and noodle dishes. read more
