It starts with the ambitious attitude you get when you join the Surge Cycling mailing list and start receiving incredible offers on class packages. "I can do this, I'll have a butt you can bounce quarters off of and be able to eat unlimited KitKats". I highly recommend getting there early so you can pick your favorite bike and warm up. This facility does not have showers, but does have changing rooms and bathrooms, and a water bottle refill station. If you want cycling shoes you have to bring your own or rent them. Staff are super helpful getting you set up on a bike. The studio provides towels and ear plugs in case the music is too loud (and sometimes for an old lady like me, it is). If you are not an experienced cyclist, I recommend picking up a pair of padded bottoms, or your lady parts will hurt FOR DAYS post the first few classes. I also recommend checking out the various instructors as they all have different styles. I will say, Surge's classes seem heavier on the choreography angle than other studios I have been to in the past. The only other thing would be nice if there was some other way to update the targeted gear and RPM level, as it's sometimes difficult to hear. This is how the class works: Minutes 1-5: oh, this is easy! Model butt, here I come! Minutes 6-8: uh oh Minutes 8 - 15: this is getting intense Minutes 16-30: Dear God, what have I done? Minutes 31 - 40: don't puke, don't puke Minutes 41- 45: sweet relief is almost here And just like having a baby, you forget all about all the pain and only remember the amazing, exhilarating moments and cardio high post class and do it all again a few days later. 10/10 would recommend to everyone read more

I loved this place the work out are cool and hip. The Music was great. The only thing I don't like is they don't have a shower or a locker room. However the class was so great I still give them four stars. They have a free parking lot. Everybody that I met when I went was very nice and helpful. I have come here a few times and done a few different classes. I bike frequently and like to switch it up and drop in here sometimes for new ideas, motivation and just all around fun! My personal fav classes are fast af and hip hop Xplicit. I biked in zions class yesterday and in Madison's class today. Both were very different but both were amazing and I burned over 450 cals in 45 minutes. Prepare to get your heart rate up, your sweat on, and leave with a bike high! We usually go to Maple Grove with Anna. They didn't have anything that worked for our schedules. Tonight was hip hop with Stephanie. She was good. Good energy. Good routine. I have a torn ACL and Stephanie gave us alternative moves for knee and back problems. I feel she catered to everyone one in class from beginners to the expert. From injured to healthy. Very friendly and a nice calorie burn. Good cyclist and cardio training. I hit the $15 new member special and was very impressed with this place. Surge is a spinning boutique, so don't expect men's and women's showers like your health club has. Surge does have changing rooms. Surge has SPD cleats for rent which is great if you're traveling. I was staying at the Marriott a couple of miles away and this place was very convenient. Don't worry about eating a light breakfast beforehand, because Surge offers free cereal bars. If you forget your water bottle, bottled water is only a dollar. The instructor was very helpful in setting up the bike. The class was nice and cool, but not too cold. The music was good and kept my interest. Towels are available. As a cyclist, I liked the format of the Jolt class. Sprints, jumps, climbs, flat terrain, tabatas and a little isolation. The bikes are just like the ones I have back at my home YMCA...Kaiser. Kaiser bikes are very easy to adjust and beginner resistance levels (easy, medium, hard) are noted in the front of the room. The Jolt class is geared more towards a beginner, but like any spin class, it's as difficult as you want to make it (i.e. add more resistance and isolation techniques). For building R&R (resistance and recovery), the Jolt class will not disappoint. My buddy Vik and I were able to barely get into a Hip Hop class the next day. The Hip Hop classes are very popular and my heartbeat was racing in no time. The only bad thing about the Hip Hop class was the Kaiser bike: when doing push-ups, I got down too far and and hit my chest on the speed knob. Hip Hop was a good workout for my abs/arms/chest, but not as much for my legs. Vik preferred the Hip Hop class more, but I enjoyed the Jolt class more and felt it was better training for my endurance bike rides. I plan on stopping by the next time I am in town. read more

I really hate working out, but I love Surge! All of the staff members are fantastic and helpful. I agree with other reviews that mention finding the instructor you like the most and the type of class that works for you. My favorite instructors are Madison, Ben, Alex & Sarah. With that being said - everyone is fantastic!! The instructors are also great about offering modifications if you have back, knee, etc. issues. More often than not, playlists are SO good and make the workout fly by because I'm jamming. There are so many classes and instructors to choose from; which is a huge plus if you want to change things up or look for a new challenge. I give this place 4 stars for what the other options are in the area and Minneapolis. If you're coming here thinking it is Flywheel or SoulCycle it isn't the same. That said, it is a 100% effort and great option for when you're in town and would like something similar to the aforementioned places. They have shoe rental but their bikes also have shoe harness things that you can use regular gym shoes in. I rented and they have limited sizes since folks own their own or wear gym shoes here. The room is like a wedding reception with curtains and backlighting and a disco ball. The room stays pretty lit up throughout the class which I think is a "con". It is distracting and I think there is an awesome benefit that flywheel and other studios have discovered by keeping a room dark to motivate and keep people focused on their workout. I used to dread spin class. Not anymore! Surge Cycling changed that. A warm welcome when you walk through the door is a great start to the experience. State-of-the-art bikes and amazing and motivating instructors (I have taken classes with Zion, Chris, Maria, Cecilie, and Donald) really make for a great workout. Awesome lighting, great music...they even provide earplugs if you should require them. Refresh afterward with a eucalyptus scented cool towel. Complimentary snacks are also provided to fuel your recovery. They really have thought of everything at Surge Cycling, and everyone that works there is wonderful. The sound system was great, the bicycles are in good shape, and Alyssa rocks! I visited Surge Cycling just prior to the Grand Opening while I was in town visiting from Washington D.C. My girlfriend and I decided we needed a little detox action since she had just gotten married two days before. I am so glad we found this studio - I talked to the owner Ken on the phone prior to coming in and he was extremely helpful with getting our accounts set up. He also mentioned his wife Zion would be teaching and that we were in for a great ride - he was so right! The studio itself is one of the coolest I've seen. It's full of positive energy from the moment you walk in. The colors are bright and crisp and there are really great motivational sayings all around the walls. "Saddle Up" was one of my favorites. And better yet, the cycling room rocked - everything was thought through from the towels to the lighting to the fun sayings on the walls. The sound system was great. You can tell a lot of passion and love went into the set up. Zion's class was challenging, calming and energizing at the same time. My friend and I were sweating like crazy but she kept our energy going for almost a full hour! Overall we couldn't have asked for a better workout or a better place. Very friendly and helpful staff, excellent instructors and the absolute best bikes in the area based on many other studios and clubs I've tried. Wow! I just had my first (free introductory!) spin session at Surge and I love, love, LOVED it! Surge is a very focused business - it's not a gym. It's not a health club. It's a place to mount a stationary bike, and GO/PUSH! The owner is enthusiastic, positive and encouraging. She taught my class today. Excellent instruction because she knows how to push you to your performance max, keep you there, then back you off. I was particularly impressed that she checked in personally with every "rider" before class to be sure our bikes settings were correct. Plus, you gotta see the actual work-out studio. G-R-O-O-V-Y. The lights, the mirrors, the graphics. It's like being on acid or K, except far healthier. Finally, nothing powers a workout better than good music. Surge checks that box, too. Great tunes to tap into delivered by lots of watts and a couple of monster Bose speakers. The only slight negative to the facility is the lack of showers - just a couple of spacious changing rooms. That's okay. Now that I know I'll plan to heading directly home next time after class. Spin done right. Go! read more

This spin studio has amazing instructors and amazing playlists!! They truly make you feel like you are part of a community when you join with showing you around the studio and how to find the right bike setting. They also have these awesome inspirational stickers on the bikes that make you make you feel like an instant boss. The studio provides complimentary towels for the ride and after class there are chilled towels to wipe off your face. Little luxuries like this can make a girl feel like a rockstar. My favorite part is probably the snacks and miscellaneous freebies on the cart in the lobby. If you like biking and jamming out you should definitely give this place a try! read more

Beautiful studio, amenities and bikes. Instructors can be a bit or miss! The studio is always clean, all the bikes are brand spanking new and are magnetic so it's like butter! If you're into the SoulCycle-type experience with lights and a dark room, this place has it. The staff and instructors are always super friendly and the people who go here are from beginners to advanced so I've never felt uncomfortable here. They have many instructors here so it really depends on finding the one you love. I will say I've had a handful of instructors where I had to go 1-2 resistance levels above the top of what they were recommending and my tracker kept asking me if I was done with my workout because my heart rate didn't get above 120 BPM. When I compare the classes at Surge to the Firm, the Firm is way way more challenging. I look at Surge as more of a fun cycling class where you will be able to walk the next day and you're have fun with the choreography, ambiance, etc. Something to consider if allowing people to book seats ahead of time, there is sometimes a bit of a dash on the weekend mornings between classes. People are all waiting right outside the door to come in and claim a bike. Perhaps if you could book online that would make it a little less hectic? read more

This place is AWESOME. My fiancé and I just started coming here. I have done a handful of group workout classes, and surge has some of the best instructors. Everyone is very helpful, nice and motivating. They also keep this facility VERY clean, which is always appreciated. Now...on to the workout....YOU WILL SWEAT YOUR BUNS OFF. The classes are technically "go at your own pace", but they really do push you to work hard. Although, I do see both men and woman of all different sizes and levels. Give this place a try! The owners are engaged and awesome, the instructors are very upbeat and challenging at the same time, the bikes are great and easy to follow your instructors cues from. They use the MINDBODY app to sign up for class so super simple. The best is the lavender infused cold towels at the end.....like a little reward for working your booty off! I also find the people who spin here to just be cool....no stress and competitiveness getting bikes, just friendly people. I can't say enough great things about surge. Oh, and they are very friendly to newbies so don't be intimidated to try it out for your first time!! Can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet! I've been going to Surge once or twice a week now for about a month. Anyone who has gone from athlete to couch-lete knows that's a big deal. I was a little nervous to go to my first class, but upon arriving everyone was so nice and helpful. Zion helped me get settled in a bike and gave me a card that shows my personal settings for next time; VERY COOL. Surge is a small studio but very big in it's design. Orange is their color, and they wear it well! I especially love the filtered water station and the restroom. Forget a ponytail band? They've got you covered! This area is filled with EVERYTHING so you can go into class feeling worry free! Lastly, Surge is not just a studio, it's a family. These people enjoy coming to class and socializing together. Everyone knows everyone and it's truly FUN. I have never been to a gym or group studio that has this kind of culture. If you haven't noticed by now I love this place. The classes are challenging but so much fun that you only want to come back and do better. Also, if your like me and just getting back on track, this is a great option because these classes are a full body workout for sure! Went here for the first time today and had an awesome experience. Have been looking for a great spin place in MPLS and Surge exceeded my expectations. Highlights: The class - great music and ambiance with tough sprints, jumps and climbs. The studio - very clean, great bikes, $3 for shoe rental, and the lavender towel at the end is a nice touch. He made sure all the new folks were fitted for their bikes, and made sure to stop by and introduce himself to me since he had never seen me before. Went to the Cycling class ran by Zion. I love ratchet, booty poppin, trill, trap music and I have found NO spin cycle studios that play explicit rap music. Well, I did today. I mean it was about as close as I could get to the type of music I listen to when I workout on my own. I LOVED it!!!!! The instructor and the peoples energy was on point. Gave 4 instead of 5 because I was expecting super hood a** trap music lol. Still bomb music and energy. Ill be back! read more

I LOVE coming to Surge! I tried the studio first as part of ClassPass, and began purchasing packs of classes! Surge offers a great workout, that is never the same and always up beat. I love that the instructors take pride in what they do and plan out a great workout for us every time! Hip Hop is my favorite ride, and I never miss Sundays with Madison. Only thing I wish for is to potentially have a couple earlier classes during the week so I could get a good sweat in before work! read more

First time today and the class was amazing. It takes a bit to get all the choreographing they do, but the music is awesome, the teachers are friendly and knowledgeable. I also give props to them for giving me a pass when my flight was cancelled and i had to cancel my class past the cancellation deadline. Best cycling class I've ever been to! I went to my first Surge class last night and loved it. I appreciate the simplicity of the place - they only do cycling classes and they do them well. They offer great lighting and music, the bikes are super comfortable and they offer filtered water and snacks (granola bars, tea, mixed nuts) along with lavender scented towels at the end of class. It's easy to sign up online and they offer a "newbie" special of two classes for $16! Can't beat that. I got a very detailed email after I signed up explaining their policies. My favorite is that you reserve a space online for the class you want. You can't be late (3 minute grace window) or they won't allow you in and they will also cancel the class if there is low attendance. Having been to lots of group fitness classes in the past, I really appreciate these two things. It holds me and everyone else accountable to get there on time and it ensures the class will be worth your while. A variety of classes are offered at Surge too. I went to sculpt cycle and will definitely be back. Each class is 45 minutes which, in my opinion, is the perfect length of time for a cycle class. This isn't a typical gym - it's a boutique-type cycling studio and there are two changing rooms but they are in the main area, so not ideal to change there (at least at the St. Louis Park location). They have cubbies in the cycle space to put coats, bags, purses, etc. For your first time, they require you to arrive 15 minutes early so they can show you around and and get you set up on your bike. They even gave me a little card with my bike settings so I have it for next time. I love the sweaty, calorie burn from cycle classes! I will be back for sure! read more

I have been to many cycling or "spin" classes over the years and this place is the best! The space is full of awesome technology from their new bikes with Keiser computers mounted on each bike, LED lights and killer sound system in the studio to filtered water available for free, towels also included in your class fee, fruit and organic candies as well as an ice cold towel to cool you down after an intense workout! Awesome! The space feels like a groovy night club where you can spin and jam away your day. You don't have to pay any silly fees to join, just take a class or buy a package and save some money and start cycling! read more

I wrote a killer review for Surge Cycling and Zion's class a few weeks back. Yelp took it down because it apparently seemed too good to be true. The fact is, it is that good. I have been doing indoor cycling for almost a decade and Zion's classes are the best I have found in the States. Her sequences are challenging, creative, skillfully crafted, always varied, and what I appreciate most-- are set to the beat of the music. No random music mixes or guessing about how fast or hard you should be working. The studio is a gem- brand new, state of the art equipment, and a lighting system that makes you feel like you're in a dance club. Great space, great people, great exercise! read more

I started at Surge late this winter after having a frustrating series of uninspiring spin classes at a local Big Box gym. At my first class, the instructor gave me a full fitting on my bike to make sure I was comfortable. The ride was great, music on point, and Rachel was great at guiding us through a series of hills and drills. Since that first class, I've been a religious 4x a week Surge-er. I've found each instructor to be awesome in their own unique way, and you can tell the studio has put great care into selecting them. This all goes without saying, I'm getting an incredible workout during each 45 minute session. If you're a music lover, be sure to check their weekly themed rides. They're a blast. Our family of 4 was in for the Thanksgiving holiday and wanted to take a spin class. The owner, Ken, was incredibly customer service focused and accommodating from initial contact. We took an amazing spin class (total 80's) and all 4 of us enjoyed it and felt it was one of the best classes we had ever taken (and that from one Soul Cycle regular).
