We just returned from our trip to Rodanthe. We had a great family vacation in the outer banks. Surf or Sound Realty was phenomenal to work with. We were able to check in to our Condo earlier than expected so that was very nice. Ally with Surf or Sound texted us almost immediately to see if we needed anything. The condo was very clean and had everything that we needed. The ocean views and distance to the beach were amazing. I got up early almost every morning to have my cup of coffee and watch the sun come up over the ocean from our deck. Will definitely be back. read more

We recently rented through Surf or Sound while vacationing on Hatteras Island, and what started as a wonderful vacation quickly turned into an incredibly stressful and uncertain situation when the storm caused damage and flooding along NC-12, leaving us stranded on the island. During a time of pure chaos--both around us and, honestly, internally--Lucas and the entire Surf or Sound team showed us an extraordinary amount of kindness, compassion, and understanding. They allowed us to remain in our rental and, more importantly, reassured us that we had a roof over our heads and a safe place to stay for as long as necessary until we could safely get off the island. When the emergency ferry finally opened, the lines were absolutely out of this world, with reports of 30+ hour waits sitting in cars just to get on a ferry. Once again, Surf or Sound stepped up. They could have easily told us, "The emergency ferry is running, so you need to leave the home." Many companies--or individual vacation rentals--might have done exactly that. But Surf or Sound didn't. Instead, they reassured us again that we could stay in our rental until the temporary road was open and we could safely make our way off the island. We rented a house for a week and the maintenance was absolutely abysmal. - doors that did not work. - 2 bedrooms with no a/c. - no lights in the back yard. - uneven front stairs. - laundry that was never picked up from the last guest. - the most disgusting kitchen sink i have ever seen and I've seen many - in a contractor. My wife and I were among the many families stranded on Hatteras during this unexpected storm, and looking back, we are incredibly thankful that we chose to rent through Surf or Sound. We had brought our 10 children with us and were joined by my wife's parents and her best friend and her boyfriend, making 15 of us in total staying in the house. When we arrived, there was no evacuation notice--only the knowledge that a storm was coming. None of us could have imagined what was about to happen or that we would end up staying several days longer than planned. As the island became cut off and our original departure date approached, we started to worry. Finding another place that could accommodate our large family would have been extremely difficult and could have cost us $400-$500 a night or more. That's when Surf or Sound stepped up in a way we will never forget. They simply told us, "Don't worry. Stay in the house." There was no pressure, no threats, and no making us feel like an inconvenience. Just genuine kindness, compassion, and understanding. Like many others, we were allowed to remain in the home for four additional days beyond our original agreement. Today, we finally made it safely off the island, and our hearts are absolutely filled with gratitude. Because of Surf or Sound, our family stayed safe, together, housed, and far less stressed during a situation that could have been incredibly frightening and overwhelming. We have been coming to Hatteras for 10+ years and typically visit 3-5 times a year. We have always had great experiences with Surf or Sound, but what they did for us during this storm went far beyond simply providing a rental home. Bella Beach Box Avon NC We love this ranch house. The size is perfect for our small family with dogs. The addition of the cargo lift is Enormously helpful! The house is very clean & the hot tub is immaculate! We love to cook. The kitchen is seriously lacking though. No liquid measuring cups, no measuring spoons. No skillets larger than 8 inches. No non stick pans. No sharp un serrated knives for dicing & mincing. No mixing bowls. No pitchers. No vegetable peeler. We brought our own chefs & paring knife and went out and bought an inexpensive 12 in non stick skillet. We also had to buy a broom to be able to sweep the floors. I give this a 4 star review because I think we're not the norm coming on vacation and cooking. Brandon at Surf or Sound has been wonderfully helpful. I will rent this house again. read more

We rented a home, Ocean Hi, in Rodanthe OBX through Surf and Sound. We paid $6,000 for the home and it was in terrible shape. We notified Surf or Sound about the most major issue and they never addressed it. The pictures they posted of the home were very outdated, probably 15 years old. We stayed at this same home 14 years ago and nothing has been updated since that visit. The house was in very rough shape, but the reviews on their website said it was 4.5 star, I would give it a 1-2 star, and I'm not usually one to leave negative reviews. - The bag of supplies that was left for us smelled like cigarette smoke, likely from the cleaners as they were smoking when we arrived. -The carpets were dirty and very worn, many holes and thread bare areas in several places. -The furniture was old and worn, especially the living room couches and chairs. -There was mold evidence throughout the home and holes in walls, patches in ceiling, etc where it was obvious they had tried to cover up some mold damage. They did have a loud air scrubber running in the kitchen. -The HVAC units on the first and second floor weren't working so the had window units installed. In one bedroom they had a floor AC unit with a hose running out the sliding door. They taped "shut" the door but it wasn't able to fully close or lock. This was unacceptable. -A window in the basement had a broken lock so the top kept falling down and open. We had several storms where a lot of water came in through the window and flooded the floor. We were up at 1 am during the first storm to try and get the window closed. We ended up using a stick to keep it propped shut. We called and text and messaged Surf or Sound. They said they would send someone out and nobody ever arrived to fix it. Luckily our temporary fix worked for the next several storms that came through. The location is beautiful and we made the best of our time there staying outside and on the beach and pool area. However this house was a mess and Surf or Sound certainly new about ongoing issues and didn't disclose them or work to fix them. Such a shame the owners aren't investing in this home, it would be an ideal rental if kept up. We won't be using Surf or Sound again as they obviously are not interested in serving the weekly renters and ensuring a good experience. read more

We paid over $4,000 for a one-week rental and specifically chose this home because it had an elevator. This was important because my daughter-in-law was very pregnant and my father-in-law has mobility limitations. I reported the broken elevator on Day 1 and followed up daily. Despite repeatedly being told the issue was being shared with their team, the elevator never worked during our entire stay. The dishwasher also did not work, and we arrived to find dirty dishes in the cabinets that had to be washed before we could use them. After our stay, I asked management to review the situation and requested a partial refund. We were eventually refunded $292.59 on a $4,000+ rental--approximately 7%. I appreciate receiving something, but I do not believe $292.59 fairly compensates for losing a major advertised amenity for the entire week, especially when the elevator was one of the primary reasons we selected this particular home. Maintenance problems happen. What matters is how a company responds when they do. Unfortunately, after reporting the problem from the very first day, following up throughout our vacation, and giving the company an opportunity to make things right, I am disappointed with the resolution. If I could give 0 or negative stars, I would! Approximately 10 months prior to our trip, we researched many homes and rental companies in the Outer Banks. We decided on a rental home that appeared to be fairly up to date and clean, with cleanliness being our top priority. My first clue that something was off eith this company should have been that they take months to send you a formal contract for your rental. Clue 2 came when I went to make my last payment and thought that the pictures now did not depict the property we rented (I checked the address at least 10 times before formally booking). Later, in talking to my sister, we realized she also believed the pictures had been changed. We were later informed they do not guarantee access to the property until 6 p.m. due to their "high standards of cleanliness". When we arrived at the property, it was dark and we were all tired from driving 16.5 hours. We noticed right away that the property was in a state of disrepair, but we checked beds for bed bugs, and all headed to bed. Over the next 24 hours we grabbed groceries that we had pre-ordered and enjoyed the nice weather outdoors, but started seeing more and more issues with the house while in it, with the primary issue being black colored mold on the vents, ceilings, walls, trim, windows, etc. We have high standards of cleanliness and always expect to do some cleaning, but these were issues beyond what you can clean away! These were issues stemming from long term neglect of the property. We are not people that generally complain, but something needs to be said about this house! At this point, we feel we have been duped! This is what we found in the home we paid $6,200 to stay in for 7 nights. -There is mold almost everywhere (in kitchen cabinets, air vents, almost every wall, and windowsills) -There are moldy and dirty vents in the kitchen, LR, and bedrooms -There is peeling wallpaper with mold behind it in at least 3 bedrooms and 1 bathroom -Visible dirt on walls, cabinets, ceilings -Almost all ceilings have massive water stains with puffing and black areas around fixtures -There is clear water damage/popping of walls and ceilings -There are bugs, ants, and spiders (see notes on contact with exterminator) -The jacuzzi looks nice, but the deck around it is in a state of disrepair and we are concerned it may collapse if any weight is placed in it and we are scared to use it -Wood rot/damage on almost every wood surface (windows, trim, walls, decking) -Fan in LR does not work -Blinds in bathrooms are too large for the window frames, they jut out, and have clear views out/in of the area you get out of the shower (set up this way in 2 bathrooms). No place to undress where you cannot be seen from neighboring properties. -Blinds in kitchen are broken/buckled -Toilet paper holder falling off the wall in 1 bathroom. There are 2 additional sets of holes in the opposite wall where it had been hung and they finally gave up. -random chairs around deck broken -deck sagging and nails popping in place -broken sliding door -dryer works, but metal on top is separating -Broken washer(repairman said it needed replaced), When we discovered this Wednesday evening, we called Thursday morning and they sent the repairman. When we messaged Surf Or Sound Maintenance after he said it needed replaced, Surf or Sound stated they would contact the homeowner, and were waiting to hear from them. They said we could drive our laundry to their office and do it there. We declined -toilet seal in bathroom with king bed broken -toilet seat loose in hallway bathroom -Floor damaged in laundry area -mold in pool around the top and there are tiles falling off of the inside of the pool -decorative lights on decking around pool falling off/damaged -fence around the pool is falling apart -random wood on LR wall covering something up. Given all of the things that are damaged with no attempt to cover them up, it really make you wonder what is behind the random wood on the wall. -The fire extinguishers expired 17 years ago! -The king size bed is basically a cot with a foam topper on it. It is horribly uncomfortable and mushy soft -There is a broom that is covered in rust and missing an end cap. Another 1 was left with just a stick. -The plastic table cloth on the kitchen table is ripped on every corner and multiple other areas (these run around $5 at Walmart) -There are soft spots in floor in the bathroom located in the bedroom with the king size bed and hallway bathroom on floor with 3 bed Lessons learned: 1. Never rental from this company! 2. Screenshot the pics of rental property from the companies website at the time of booking. 3. Only rent from companies that others with similar standards have rented from and recommend. 4. Do not rent properties that are rented to people traveling with pets. 5. Only rent properties where you can tell independent reviews of the properties have been permitted to be posted. read more

Things that needed service were taken care of right away and communication was good with the company. The decor throughout is charming. The recreation area was great for the kids, although recommend securing the arcade game to wall. This was our third time visiting Endless Summer over about the past 10-11 years, and although we love the space and the home, some things are worn ( couches, swivel chairs in living area off kitchen, some of mattresses ( mb on second floor. especially) and there were many, many popped nails on the wood decking around the pool which were dangerous to kids and adults (hooking toes or wounding skin on feet ). The pots n pans in kitchen are a little too worn as well. So these are the reasons for 4 stars. Otherwise, this home is large, close walk to beach, great jacuzzi, full laundry, gas n charcoal grills. We had 8 kiddos and 7 adults. We brought our own hand soap, dish soap, dish towels, foil, plastic wrap, storage bags, trash bags, paper towels, etc but there's a great Dollar General close by for just about anything else. read more

Extremely Disappointed--No Response from Surf or Sound Realty After Serious Issues with Knights in Salvo** We recently rented *Knights in Salvo* through **Surf or Sound Realty**, and it was by far the most disappointing beach rental experience we've had in over 35 years of renting homes in the Outer Banks. We expected a clean, comfortable, and well-maintained property. Instead, we arrived to a house that was clearly a "fixer upper" and obviously not ready to be rented out. Issues included broken kitchen chair, stained drawers, sheets in one bedroom that were covered in dog hair that had not been changed, a terribly stocked kitchen, a home theater that was never plugged up to work, broken leg on propped up table, broken pool recliners, and ants that infested our food in the kitchen. . .to list a few. The entire house felt like a project in need of serious repairs, not a vacation home worthy of the price. While Surf or Sound Realty did respond to a few concerns during our stay, **we have reached out since returning home and have received no response at all**--no follow-up, no acknowledgment, no apology. For a company managing high-cost vacation homes, this lack of customer service is unacceptable. It feels like the home is being knowingly rented out below basic standards, and that's simply not acceptable. So,why is this company still listing this house--at premium pricing--when it clearly doesn't meet basic vacation rental standards? If Surf or Sound Realty knows these problems exist and they continue to rent it anyway, then Surf or Sound Realty is actively part of the deception. We would not recommend *Knights in Salvo* or Surf or Sound Realty based on this experience. We expected much better and were deeply disappointed. read more

The following issues occurred:- (All were referred to the Surf or Sound general number as well as to the "Results-Driven Operation Manager (RDOM) at Surf or Sound" 1. Bedding arrangements were not those listed on the listing (contacted on the first date of arrival - no response other than automated - we will refer it to the team. No response from (RDOM)) 2. Several doors would not latch or close properly - safety issue (maintenance man sent 3 days after notification - no fix to the issue) 3. Several spindles were missing from the deck, and several were loose. (Maintenance man sent three days after dangerous spindals, drilled weakened spindals back in - only issue slightly fixed, but at great delay) 4. Cockroaches in property - told business - no response other than that they would send it to the appropriate team and did nothing 5. Hot tub did not work, information from Surf or Sound says that it is checked before the stay and midweek (no evidence that either of these took place) - It was not functioning on arrival and no one was sent midweek, nor to any of the reports of the lack of function ((RDOM) again did not respond to the situation) 6. Generally, Surf or Sound did not respond to complaints beyond automated responses stating that they would refer it to the appropriate team, were not concerned about my issues, and had no desire to help their guests. We will not be booking through them ever again. read more

I stayed at a property identified as Freebird #460 in Salvo NC managed by Surf or Sound Realty. This was the worst experience I have ever had from over 25 years of renting homes at the beach. Below is the email that i sent to Orville at Surf or Sound Realty Which is owned by Realtor Dale Petty. While I appreciate your intent to compensate for the shortcomings of our stay at Freebird last week, I am not sure that you are aware of all the things that were not acceptable. I will list the issues that we had to deal with because a refund of $79.75 doesn't seem to be in the ballpark. First the elevator does not work, and we were not informed of this until the day before our arrival. We had someone in our group that had both knees replaced so the elevator was an important feature in choosing this property. As we entered the house Saturday evening, there was a heavy musty, mildewy odor. I immediately checked the thermostats and found that the humidity was over 60%. I called the office the next morning and an HVAC service person did come out that day. However, there was no remedy. The humidity reached as high as 70%. Air vents were filthy and had mildew black mold (very unhealthy). I found significant mold/mildew throughout the house and visited the Surf or Sound office with evidence of the problem (pictures attached) and requested a dehumidifier. No dehumidifier was ever brought to the house. Then there were the bugs, cockroaches to be exact. Lots of roaches. Again, I brought this to Thomas' attention. An exterminator did come out the next day or two, but it was unacceptable to have issue to begin with. Now we are worried about unintentionally carrying the pests to our home. There was also a significant amount of mildew in the 2nd floor walk-in shower. Bathmat in green bedroom had mildew, and there were crumbs on bed under the bedspread. Green room and children's bedroom did not have pillows. I was mindful to not leave anything for roaches to be attracted to, so on our first night (and every night) I made sure to take all trash outside. I removed the trash bag in the kitchen, and the smell inside the can was disgusting. At this point I am getting quite disgusted, so I left it outside and informed Thomas. The carpets were sticky and filthy. Thomas offered to have them cleaned, but with the high humidity we felt that it would be unwise. The table on the deck was upside down. The checkers in the drawer of the checker table had mold. Ceiling fan blades had significant dust. There were many lights that had bad bulbs. Some did get replaced, but we found more as the week went on. Closet lights, broken bulb in lamp in children's room, ceiling fan lights one with broken/missing glass, red bedroom bath light, driveway light, pool area light, in pool light, deck light, dining room light, The ladders in the children's bedroom were both broken and unsafe. The table in the screened porch area was filthy. Set of king sheets came with smaller size sheet. Red bedroom bedspread had many tears and is worn out. The poolside sound system did not work, so we could not "listen to our favorite music piped through poolside speakers" as stated in the house's description. The outdoor shower door fell off of its hinges and was never repaired. The sound system in the great room did not work. I hope that you can understand by this accounting of the property's issues, $79.75 is not an appropriate amount. I look forward to your response. read more

We were notified the day before about the elevator not working and would not be fixed until after we leave. 4 flights of stairs we had to go up and down on top of having elderly people with us which was even harder for them to go up and down. The air didn't work on the 1st and 2nd floor so a whole week with no air. Was given an email address to send an email to at the least give back some of the $7100.00 for this house and I have yet to get a response. We will never use them ever ever again. read more

We took a family trip and did extensive research to find a place that had everything we wanted. One thing being a hot tub. The week before we arrived we were told the hot tub could not be used. They did nothing to accommodate us and we were unable to cancel. The pictures on the listing did not reflect how run down it actually was and they did not do a good job cleaning. Such a disappointment. We enjoyed the view of the sound but there are way better options out there. read more

MOTHER OF WAVES # 1090 We had significant issues (listed below). We requested a refund for at least one night of rent, considering part of the home was unusable. We received $400! That does not even cover one night out to eat for our party of 12. Extremely disappointed in the customer service and would NOT rent from this company again. SATURDAY: We checked into Mother of Waves on August 2nd. Prior to arriving, we received a message saying that there were issues with the HVAC that caused a leak onto the carpet. We arrived and the carpets in the one bedroom were soaked. In addition, the area rug in the loft was also wet. Within an hour of arriving the management team had maintenance staff here. The carpet in the one impacted bedroom was cleaned and pulled up, with fans running. We were told it was best not to use the bedroom for the night to allow the carpet to dry. Fans were also placed upstairs to dry the area carpet. The HVAC team arrived Saturday afternoon to fix the HVAC. Additional fans were brought over to dry the closet where the HVAC system is located, which was also wet. In addition, 2 de-humidifiers were brought over with fans to be placed in the impacted bedroom, as well as the basement area. On our first day/night, we were unable to use the one main bedroom, had to live in a house with running fans and de-humidifiers with a very full house of people. As I am sure you can imagine this was not an ideal way to start a vacation. SUNDAY: All of the equipment remained in the house all day. On Sunday afternoon, we used the one main shower in the bedroom which had the wet carpet. We immediately noticed an enormous amount of water had leaked from the bathroom, through the ceiling to the basement area. We contacted management. MONDAY: They sent a plumber over at 9AM. We had to wake the family sleeping in that room up. He was unable to fix it. The plumber was planning to come back the next day but we were told it would be at least 36 hours that the shower would not be usable. This shower was unusable for the remainder of our trip with a full house for of people. OTHER OVERALL: -Top level shower has mold along all of the edges and the water stripping is hanging off -Bottom level shower towards the pool - shower doors are loose so we have not been using that shower -Bottom level shower towards the front of the house water temperature is inconsistent -Refrigerator - ice maker does not dispense ice read more

We had a terrible experience renting a beach house over spring break from Surf or Sound Realty. We rented a 5-bedroom on the beach in Salvo. The day before our vacation was to commence, we were told not to show up before 6pm on our first day. Rip off. We planned around it and arrived late on our first day. The first thing we noticed was that 4 out of 6 trash cans were already full to the brim. Then, we noticed the fireplace didn't work. Then, we noticed they only supplied 4 rolls of toilet paper. Then, we noticed the hot-tub wasn't even turned on. We figured out how to turn on the hottub, but it took 4 hours before it came to temperature and was usable. A few days later, one of our girls noticed some stranger came in the morning and moved some trash cans. We later noticed that the hottub had been turned off and re-sealed with the belt. We tried to turn the hot tub back on, but the power had been shut off. We called Surf and Sound realtor and advised them of the situation so they could turn the hot tub back on. Hours later, we followed up and they said "no one paid the maintenance bill" so we spent half our vacation with a non-working hot tub despite Surf and Sound Reality being advised (but did NOTHING about it). We stayed at Queen Ann's Revenge in Hatteras NC. First SOS was great to deal with from start to finish. Nothing was a problem. Payment was easy and fair for the area not to mention in payments. They sent you out a link to set up your account so you could see what was owed and when. They sent you links that we used to rent items for the beach as well as bikes and kayaks that brought the items there and picked them back up for your stay. The house was spotless when we arrived. They worked with the company that got our groceries so they were all there and put away when we arrived. Most restaurants did not have reservations so we used a service that came on site and cooked served and then cleaned up 2 of our dinners. That was fabulous. Upon arrival we had someone who was our contact person if we needed anything and a few items we did like beach towels he texted us right back and the towels were there ASAP. The check out process was smooth and they sent you directions 2 days before you left. With only one improvement maybe put enough toilet paper for every bathroom to start would be better as for some it is a 8 hour trip and upon arrival more that 4 bathrooms needed to be used but truly that was it everything was amazing, everyone we dealt with was wonderful and could not do enough to help. We have already booked for next season. Rented through surf and sound during off season and the price was $495. After all the fees and everything they tack on, the total was over $1300!! Charging $400 for a pet fee as it their cleaners do anything extra when there's pets. Arrived with sand, dust and handprints on everything! Everything in the kitchen was sticky. The couches were sticky. The carpet was sticky. About an inch of dust on both the bathroom mirror overhead lights which is how I know they do not thoroughly clean at all. Wish i would've seen all the complaints in fb groups about this company before I rented through them. They're clearly all about making money and not managing the rentals at all. read more

Paradise Cove #747 This place is absolutely the worst. There are so many things that are broken. The elevator is broken and they won't fix it, the internet doesn't work, the washing machine is broken, the toilet is broken, the doors don't open, the ceiling is leaking. I've been calling since the first day I got here and the problems just keep happening. The TV in each room is so small that you can't watch it. It's not worth for the money. read more

We had a great trip in a great home. I would use Surf or Sound again, 100%. Pros- Ease of booking, responsiveness, dedicated contact beyond standard business hours who was absolutely reachable, friendly maintenance people. Cons- One of my payments was not credited and then I was drafted way more money than I owed and I found it and had to have resolved. We were told to arrive at 6pm and I even tried to see if any possibility house ready early since it was not even rented the week prior. They said 6pm. We are loading the car the morning of arrival (6 hours away) and get a text that the house is ready, frustrating. I found that fees were way higher than some of the other rental companies. We did have to spend some time working through maintenance issues but they were resolved quickly and it's just the nature of renting a big home on the beach. read more
