My wife and attended the Art of the Wok cooking class. Orange chicken, wok fried rice, dry-fried Sichuan green beans, and Cantonese steamed milk pudding are a lot to cram into two hours. But all nine students participated and seem to have fun. We look forward to attending more classes. We learned more than just the recipes, such as where to place the cutting board, holding a knife, and the proper technique to fillet a chicken breast. I can certainly carry these tips to other recipes. The instructor was friendly, helpful, and attentive. Previous reviews gave Elaine a bad rap. Either this is a different Elaine or she has improved her courtesy. read more

My wife and I celebrated our eighth wedding anniversary by taking a date night cooking class here. It was hard to find a seat because of all the flies that were flying around on the food. Absolutely disgusting experience! I had the courage to walk back into the pantry only to be confronted by Lord of the flies and half empty used bottles of old vinegar. As for the instructor, she seemed quite new to the world of fine cuisine. It almost seemed this class was geared for children learning to cook, as most of the instructions were geared towards the mind of an eight year-old. As every day cookers, my wife and I learned absolutely nothing except to ensure a clean kitchen before starting meal prep. Obviously, we will not be returning to partake in anymore classes and I highly recommend others to look elsewhere. Sur La Table really needs to get their act together if they want to be taken seriously. Just a few suggestions for those that work there and read this review: 1) every group should get their own ingredients to prepare their own dishes 2) people should wash their hands before starting to touch any of the food which did not happen for our class, especially when you see them picking parts of their body that are quite unsanitary 3) should probably hire a real chef to teach the class so that we actually learned something about proper culinary practices 4) should probably clean the kitchen in between classes so that the number of flies in the kitchen does not rival that of a Porta potty at a heavy metal concert. Quite disappointing to pay $100 for meal that is equivalent to my worst day of cooking. Tata, David read more

This review is for the cooking class. My boyfriend and I came for the Date Night steak and crab cakes cooking class. We had a great experience overall. We got paired up with one other person to prep the meal (it's usually a group of 4). We took turns cooking/prepping. I thought we'd each prep a steak but was just one for the group so keep that in mind. The chef was friendly and engaging. read more

This is a nice store for kitchen ware at Palo Alto . It is located inside the Town and Country Village shopping mall . It carries many name brands of top quality cookwares and many kitchen tools . You can made one stop and find everything you need . I find it most interesting is the store hosts a cooking class . You need to pre register ahead of time . One of my family has joined and learned how to make Beef Wellington. Then the following Christmas we had Beef Wellington for dinner ! Lots of parking outside the front door . Great customer service . This is a nice store to visit and look at all the new merchandise. read more

We bought some items here over the years and also took some cooking classes. The staff in the store is knowledgeable and will help you with any of your questions. Is definitely worth getting all the Information, especially if you invest into some more expensive gadgets or cookware. The cooking classes are also good fun, pretty relaxed and you'll certainly pick up one or two new skills. Perfect for a date as well. They're not super in depth though and you won't perform all steps as you work in groups. The final result was delicious every time. read more

5 stars for the French Pastry class! It was fun & I did learn a couple tricks for laminated dough which i have never done Being the first time any of us made these they didnt look so great and I did not taste them in class but did so on the way home & all were incredible... I could not believe we had just made them. The pastries tasted like they came from a high dollar french kitchen and I'm so impressed. Yes, you can watch people on youtube but youtube is no replacement for hands on instruction in person from professionals in a commercial kitchen. I'm reeeeeally looking forward to doing the bread class at some point read more

I have come here several times to shop and always go after the deals. Otherwise, things are generally quite pricey but of good quality. Store personnel have always been very nice and helpful also. I never connected the smell of food in the store to cooking classes, but I discovered that last night with Chef Michael! My date had a creative idea to enroll us in the "Essential Skills for Thanksgiving" cooking classes. We both arrived promptly at 7pm. and to our delight, we were the only culinary students attending. We were both given aprons and shown the prep trays for each dish. Chef Michael was very precise and informative with his instructions and although serious, I could tell he's very passionate about cooking and knowledgeable. I took full advantage of his expertise by asking questions which he was happy to answer. He even threw some French words out there such as "Mise en place" (everything in place [prepped ingredients]) and "roux" (flour and butter together for a thickened gravy or sauce). We started with the Pumpkin Creme Brulee which he took us through step by step and explained the reasoning for the processes such as heating the milk and cream together and combining with the egg yolks slowly in the mixing bowl to not cook the eggs to maintain a smooth viscosity of the mixture. Next, we cut up sweet potato and prepped it for the salad to roast in the oven. The chicken was next. We cut some carrots, garlic, celery and stuffed it in the cavity with the precut onions. Chef Michael showed us how to tie the legs up properly. It was nice to know I'd been doing it correctly! I learned to tuck the wings instead of having to tie them. He also explained his brining process. He put the chicken in the oven and explained the accelerated cooking process. Since, we only had two hours. The mash potatoes were next. The potatoes had already been boiled, and this is where I discovered a ricer tool! I used my 10% off (given to all who takes a cooking class) to get my own. It does a much better job of making smooth mash potatoes than a smashing tool. Roasting the pecans for the salad with egg whites was easy and also a good idea. The creme brulee used all the yokes. The gravy process was next while the pecans were placed in the oven on a baking sheet. As our mini Thanksgiving meal for two was nearly done, Chef Michael set up our place settings, and we finalized the salad by mixing the dressing and preparing for the best part- eating! Once the chicken was finished, Chef Michael demonstrated cutting the chicken properly. I have mostly been doing it correctly. He prepared it on a serving plate, and we both put everything else together for indulgence in the fruits of our labor. Our salads were consumed on chilled plates. The potatoes and gravy were warm from the oven. Chef Michael packed up most of what we decided to take home. The only thing missing was wine! However, the deal is there must be 10 or more for a private cooking event in order to bring wine and pour yourselves. (Sur la Table doesn't have a liquor license.) Definitely confirm all the details with the store though. I never thought I would enjoy a cooking class here so much and of course the instructor is a huge part of that also. I would definitely return to do this again. I learned a lot and have now honed my holiday cooking skills thanks to Chef Michael! read more

Sur La Table - Everything prepped for our cooking class - Home Decor Near Me - Palo Alto, California

My boyfriend and I had the most wonderful date night at the cooking class! Shabeen taught us step by step how to make the most delicious steak, mashed potato, and salad meal, along with a dark chocolate soufflé to finish it off. The entire experience was interactive and informative, but most importantly fun!! They were also able to accommodate my gluten allergy and were extra careful to double check with me on ingredients. The kitchen was clean and well kept, but there were quite a few cooks in the kitchen. This was a 10/10 experience and I couldn't recommend it enough. Thank you Shabeen and Sur La Table we will be back! read more

I did a cooking class here & the chef was awesome! Patient with everyone and simply kind. I was a bit afraid for this class since all the reviews said Elaine was a horrible instructor BUT luckily we didn't get her! We had a great time read more

The instructor, Elaine, made this class very unenjoyable from start to finish. She had a negative attitude from the moment we walked in, complaining about the previous class running late before rushing straight into the lesson. Her comments were inappropriate and rude throughout, she gave zero explanation of instructions, and questions were met with dismissive responses like "I already showed you that." At one point I genuinely felt uncomfortable, like I was in trouble just for asking something. Rather than teaching us to make sushi, she ended up making most of it for us -- the matcha drink, yuzu dipping sauce, and sushi rice -- and never actually showed us how to roll the sushi itself, which was the whole point of a sushi-making class. She was also harsh with her kitchen assistant Dennis, who was kind and helpful and didn't deserve it. To top it off, she rushed me and my boyfriend out at the end while I was still eating and told me to just take my drink with me. We came for a fun date night and left feeling talked down to. Elaine's attitude has made us hesitant to return to this Sur La Table location. read more

Took a private cooking class at Sur La Table for a team bonding event. I enjoyed the time we spent together, and the end result of tasting the fruits of our labor! Our chocolate souffles turned out good for some of us first-timers. However, our lead chef didn't seem like they wanted to be there. They spoke incredibly fast, yet was short with their instructions and rushed us at every step. They were very bossy to their assistant who was helping out to provide materials and wash utensils/dishes. The dynamic between them was distracting and disrupted the vibe a bit. What was even more distracting was that the instructor kept picking on someone on my team, and called on their name in almost every sentence at one point. I thought this was very unprofessional considering this wasn't done in a friendly manner. The energy was just off.. Although we came for a team outing, I probably wouldn't come back to this location as the energy/vibe of the session left a lasting impression on me. Location: Tucked away in the "Town & Country" Plaza in Palo Alto. Parking is TIGHT and definitely hard to find a spot during lunch time. read more

Sur La Table - Chocolate Souffle! - Home Decor Near Me - Palo Alto, California

I came here for a cooking class that was hosted by Elaine. I was shocked by how unprofessional and rude she was. She clearly did not want to be there, made comments to other participants such as "I already explained this", and had a horrible attitude the entire duration of the course. The class was $109 per person and the amount of food we made was barely anything at all, maybe $20-$30 worth. It felt like a complete ripoff on top of the instructor being so dismissive and off-putting. If you come here for a class, absolutely do not take part of any that has Elaine as the instructor. read more

This is for a cooking class that my mother and I attended for Mother's Day so it's a bit old (I forgot to finish the remaining 10%). The email stated "class will last between 120 to 180 minutes" but in an attempt to squeeze out profits, I guess Sur La Table crammed the schedule too full because we were rushed out after 150 minutes and didn't get to finish the chocolate-covered caramels, so we ended up with separate blobs of caramels that started leaking butter as soon as our hands warmed them up. I had a very old gift card that covered the full cost of the class for both of us, but definitely would not have paid $99 per person (for some reason it was more expensive than the usual price of the classes) for this experience. But the other treats we made were great. As expected, much of the cooking portion was shared between groups due to the limited space, but we each got to bring back a decent box of desserts. read more

Reviewing the cooking class we took here recently: 5-stars: 2 Kitchen Assistants were amazing, anything the teaching chef wanted, they were on it. The ingredients were beautiful & fresh and nicely prepped! Everything in the details ran smoothly, great crew! 4 stars: wow what a killer kitchen! Everything you need like you're on a cooking show. Bottomless mounds of utensils and prep bowls.... Only wish was that they let us students rummage thru and grab what utensils & tools we needed. 3 stars: Teaching chef: 3 Clearly they don't prep a lot for the classes, don't even know very far ahead what they'll be teaching, and the instructions are preset. Pops of fun when she would tell us "the instructions say this, but I'll show you how *I* would do this, and this is why..." mixed with chaotic times when she didn't know the overall order of what we were doing next.... Kudos to the kitchen assistants for rolling with it. One star: having 4 to a group so you're spending more time watching than doing, and having to navigate with 2-3 strangers on who gets to do what?? At least cut that in 1/2. Many people like we were on dates, so in pairs is cute, and at worst you + a stranger is the start of a great hallmark romance. read more

Took a macaron baking class here with my friend and had the best time! Our instructor was super knowledgeable and helpful, they made the whole process easy to follow and fun, even for beginners like me. I totally recommend it if you're looking for a cute and hands-on activity! read more

Non existent service for certain people. I went to the store because I was looking to purchase cooking utensils and a full set of cookware. I observed 3 staff in the store and not one cared enough to engage with me. However, there were others that entered the store and I observed them being greeted by the staff as well as receiving assistance while shopping. I walked around the entire store and not 1 associate greeted me or asked if I needed help. Needless to say I left without making a purchase. If you don't want me in your store, I'm happy to take my business elsewhere. read more

First time here. I thought it was a restaurant. That's how first time here I am. This review isn't about the cooking class. Upon entering, the two gentlemen asked if we were there for the class. We were there to look at the various kitchenware. Whatever you need in the kitchen from utensils, pots, pans, bakeware, coffee machines, knives, wine glasses, anything -- this is the place. One of the associates did offer espresso. That was a very kind gesture. Price points vary depending on what you need. I ended up with a microplane zester and a stainless steel bench scraper. Cool little place. read more

My experience is regarding the cooking class. It was my second class and this time was with Chef Julia. It was a great experience and very informative. We cooked a salad with porkchops and I swear, it's rare that to have a porkchop that taste that good. Chef Julia was amazing instructor and very informative. She had many side fun facts about anything and everything food/cooking related. After the class, Chef Julia convinved me to get a couple of cooking tools, not to sell for Sur la table but for her own recommendations. My gf and I had tons of fun and would do this a third time. Thank you Chef Julia! read more

I participated in the Croissant Connoisseur class "taught" by Katherine on Feb 27, 2026. She was ill prepared, changed instructions frequently, and was essentially literally and figuratively disheveled. Furthermore, after all the work we did rolling out pastry, the results were inferior. Katherine promised to send us all the recipes after the class. Mine didn't arrive, so I reached out and asked for them. She called me and said that my email with the recipes had "bounced back" and that another cook would call and get the correct info from me. That was a lie on Katherine's part. SLT has my email address and I received a receipt for the class, and marketing promotions since then. So, she didn't send the recipes and no one else called me to get my correct email address because they already have it. I will NEVER take another cooking class at the Palo Alto store from Katherine. She was dishonest and ill prepared. The experience left a very bad taste in my mouth, and I will never shop there again or take another class there. Beware! read more

Booked cooking classes twice. Once they called and canceled it the day before due to some ingredients that they couldn't get. And the next time they said the Dumpling 101 couldn't be made vegetarian (which was my request/ask). 1. The process is so cumbersome there is no clear indication on the website if something was vegetarian friendly as far as I could tell. 2. I had to call customer care then the store who then asked me to call back and they said they couldn't make it vegetarian. Then I asked them to cancel my booking but they said I need to call customer service back to guide me through a long ish process online. This is frustrating even without being there. Not signing up again. read more

I recently took a cooking class at Sur La Table and it was Autumn in Italy themed where we made chicken marsala, polenta, endive salad, and homemade. The class did feel a bit rushed with only select people participating in parts of the cooking but overall it was fun. The instructor is helpful but doesn't provide that much guidance if you're really looking to hone your skills. Instructions can be difficult to follow too but for a short class this was a fun experience and it's always nice to be able to eat your final product. read more

Took a Croissant class with Chef Andrea. It was fun because we made it fun! Being an instructor (not for cooking) myself, I know it can be hard to teach people. You have the know-it-alls, the super-serious, the class clowns, etc. Chef Andrea shifted gears between the personalities of this small class with ease and professionalism with a little bit of candor and playfulness. I would recommend the cooking classes as they teach the basics and everything is prepared mis en place for you and they clean up after you AND you get to take the food home! AAAAND you get 10% off in store for the day! The sales staff was kind albeit a little pretentious. But what do you expect at a town & country in Palo Alto? LOL... I am saddened about most of the Sur La Tables in the South Bay Area closing. I wish they would open back up. With all the food delivery platforms out there, I guess people of lost their passion or even willingness to cook for themselves. read more

I bought nine pieces of Nova Deruta dishware online. Of the nine, THREE arrived damaged or broken right out of the box. I called customer service, and at their request, sent photos of the damaged items. Supposedly, they will ship new ones. But I find it incredible that they cannot pack dishes well enough to withstand the jostling of shipping. Even I would have done a better job of packing them than they did, and that is their business. No stores near me in Maine, and depending on how they resolve this issue, I'm not sure I will shop with them again. read more

If you need cookware, call ahead and see if Fisher is at the Palo Alto store. The sales clerks on the floor did not know the details, qualities, and differences of the bakeware offered at the store. Two reps tried to help me and both said they would get someone. I waited for awhile, especially as it's gift buying time, and Fisher came as I was heading to the front door to leave. He was very knowledgeable and personable. Sur La Table only had nonstick and non-stick aluminum baking pans. I bought the quarter sheet pans I needed. I did more research when I got home and found another option--more expensive--with aluminum core and stainless steel outer covering. I will return my quarter pans and buy the stainless steel variety from another purveyor. If Sur La Table wants to compete with Williams Sonoma and other high quality cookware stores, they need to offer more options. If they don't have the floor space, maybe it can be an online order only and offer samples to view in-store (and a knowledgeable associate who can guide customers to the best option for their needs). I thought aluminum was my only option. For a long time consumers were urged not to buy aluminum. Maybe new products reduce the former risks? I am biased against aluminum cookware. I like Sur La Table and I'd like to see them be more competitive with larger gourmet cooking stores. I want to come here more, but if the selection remains limited, I won't. I want a store that has all the options so I can make a reasoned choice, rather than purchasing, doing more research, buying elsewhere, and returning original item to La Sur. The pans I want run for $120ish and $85ish on sale, and I need three--that seems like a price point this store would want. read more

This is mainly for their cooking class. I ended up taking the class instead of my partner because he ended up getting sick. The dish we were learning to make was their dim sum menu. Overall I feel like it wasn't worth taking the class. The best thing I got out of the class was how to properly hold a knife. Most of the ingredients were prepped for us (which I do understand it's for time). The actual cooking (like prepping the steamer and taking the food out) was done by the instructor. All we really did was throw the ingredients in the food processor and then form some dumplings. The instructor and other staff were very friendly though and they didn't give much push back on me replacing my partner. Overall, if you're looking for someone to really teach you how to cook, this probably isn't the place to go. read more

Sunday morning. Empty store. Great selection but you can find almost everything cheaper online or elsewhere. It's a place to come in, feel and touch it then buy it online. I did make a purchase. I expected and asked for a bag. The clerk said they are free, then walked away. The cooking classes are fun and expensive and you never know what crowd will show up. Isn't this supposed to be an upscale retailer in a wealthy suburb? Maybe they should hire and train staff. I know service is a big word. I was so put off, I won't shop here anymore. read more

Came here for a cooking class that was a Valentine's Day gift from my boyfriend and had so much fun! In our class we made a strawberry cake, sticky toffee pudding, and pork wrapped in pastry dough. Our teacher was super friendly and helpful. He showed us how to do each step clearly and let us do most of the work by ourselves, but was there when we needed help. I feel like they did a good job at picking the recipes since we did a bunch of different steps and it didn't feel like we were doing the same thing over and over again. We made caramel, made the pork mixture, sliced and decorated a cake, etc. I took away a star because you have to work in groups of 4 but I noticed that most people in the class came in a groups of 2. It was fun working with other people but the class isn't cheap and for the amount they charge, I feel like you should be able to choose if you want to work with just your group. I will say that you come out of the class with a lot of pastries to take home. I think this is such a cute date idea, activity to do with your friends and/or kids! It's a little pricey but I still think it's worth it and they have different recipes on different days. read more

We attended at the "Taste of Thailand" course at the Santa Rosa site. It is a nice idea for "date night", but overall it was underwhelming. There is no complaint about the format. The chef was nice and the 2 assistants were stellar. 16 people attended and we were paired with a nice lady and her daughter. Enjoyed their company. The unfortunate part is there was really no added value to the class. We could read and follow the recipes on our own and end up with the same results. So in our opinion it was quite pricey ($89 per person) for what it was. I don't see us repeating an in-store class, however, we are going to try an online course to see if there is any added value there. read more

So disappointed : ( I bought this as an anniversary gift for me and my boyfriend. We love to cook so I didn't mind shelling out $200 and driving over an hour to attend this class and learn something new together! We signed up for the Tuscany "date night" with Chef Andrea (who was nice). When we showed up all of the food was precooked and prepped. Zucchini grilled, pasta boiled and the donut dough risen. Most ingredients we were told came from Costco. We stood and watched as Chef Andrea made the donuts. There was very limited space at the worked stations and the class felt very packed. 4 stations for 16 students and 3 staff. We took turns with the couple at our station to season the food, assemble the dish and plate. The cutting board and knife were used once the whole night and didn't get to make any part of the dessert. Here is what I was able to participate in: Adding lemon zest (already zested) Adding 2 tbsp of cream (pre measured) Adding salt Cutting zucchini into bite size chunks Turning over half of the scallops Adding ricotta mix to pasta All in all I think this is a class for folx who do not feel comfortable in the kitchen and may need more guidance. If you love to cook, just put this money towards nice ingredients or a new kitchen gadget and try a new recipe at home. read more

Update 6-25-2025: I did get a full refund. What a horrible experience! I never post reviews but we couldn't let this one go. We signed up for a pizza cooking class. ($238 for 2 people). The class started out ok. Everyone assembled their pizzas, then baked in a pizza oven. So far so good. The last type of pizzas needed to be grilled. Grill was turned on and smoke began to fill the room. The staff continued to instruct students to grill their pizzas in spite of billowing smoke. It got so bad that many of us had to leave the room. (Smoke alarms never went off, not sure they had any). Eventually the entire store filled with smoke when a fan was produced to blow smoke out of classroom. We were told the air vents were broken. Staff not allowed to open back door to vent. We never got to finish the class because the smoke was so thick. SLT should have stopped the class, but they did not. The manager Hoshim, promised us a full refund. We'll see if we get it. I wish I had called fire dept to show up and shut the class down but hindsight.....it was a pretty dangerous situation which I hope they remedy in the future. We definitely will not be returning read more

We went for the Latin American "Date night" cooking class on July 4th . When we first arrive there was only 2 other couples ( 6 people ) total but the chef asked up to split in teams of 3 because there was only 2 stations prepped for us . Why wouldn't they just prep 3 stations ? Especially when they usually have a class of 16 I would think this would be easy to do ,no one wants to split from their partner on a date night... our chef was very nice but since we refused to split we had to split a lot of task with another couple which was not a problem but it made it very hands off for me when I was expecting to actually learn how to cook a meal that I can make again for family . Like I said the chef was nice but it did not seem like she was really teaching us , it did not seem like she knew how to do this without the instructions . ( everything was pre measured and she only told us the amount or extra info if we needed , if I wanted to cook the meal again I would not be able too without looking it up ) Overall I feel like we each had a time of just standing around and then she said we were going to have to split the steaks in 3 because only 2 were prepped ! For 200$ total for me and my partner I would be expecting not to have to split anything because that price can get me anything I want at a regular steak house . This was nice for 1 time but I will be trying classes somewhere else so I can actually learn something . read more
