SUPPLY Bulk Foods is Boston’s first plastic-free, dry bulk food store that carries over 250 products, many locally owned suppliers, fair trade, organic and ethically sourced foods, such as grains, spices, beans, coffee, tea, snacks, chocolate, nuts, dried fruits, baking essentials, accessories, and more.
Our mission is to make plastic free living easy, while helping to alleviate Massachusetts' food insecurity issues.
SUPPLY’s model is one where, instead of high delivery fees and traffic ridden travel to a store, orders are placed online and then picked up locally at a partnered business in their neighborhood - over 15 partnered businesses in Eastern MA so far…and we ship. All orders are entered online!
History
Established in 2021.
Supply Bulk Foods was founded by Alys Myers, a Dorchester resident and lifelong environmentalist. After chairing the recycling committee & working for 10 years at Massachusetts General Hospital, Center for Community Health Improvement, working with the Surfrider Foundation, and during the pandemic seeing the long lines at her neighborhood community refrigerator, she was inspired to build a company that serves people lacking easy access to plastic free groceries.
Later learning Massachusetts ranks third in the nation for food insecurity, she found that selling food in bulk (which was missing completely from Boston at the time) was a great way to show people that it’s easy to eat healthy and go plastic free at the same time. It also gives people the ability to buy food in the quantities that are needed and reduce food waste.
The result is a company that is good for the community (it exists because of community relationships all over Eastern Massachusetts) and the environment.
Meet the Business Owner: Alys M.
I am a lifelong environmentalist, having worked with the Surfrider Foundation for years, as well as forming environmental groups at jobs over my career, including chairing the Recycling Committee at MGH for 10 years. When looking for next steps, and wanting to help solve our plastics problem, I realized that people were talking at others to go plastic free but no one was showing them how to do it and making it easier for them. At that point I realized that the two goals of sustainability and relieving food insecurity fit well together and I was on my way.
