Friendly service, easy parking, and even older people like me say 15% on Thursdays with the senior discount. Not a great selection of clothes and the prices were too high, even at the 50% off with the one marked-down tag. I hope management reviews that and adjusts prices accordingly. They have a good selection of furniture, housewares, books and accessories. Inventory changes frequently and make sure to sign up for their super thrift loyalty program, it makes it all worth it. This store is probably closed, such a bummer. I went in on the second to last day and had a great time.

I tried to shop here one time and one time only. The workers were very condescending and talking trash about someone down on their luck. They were very nasty too and very loud about it, therefore putting a sour taste in my mouth. Prices seemed extremely high and there were so many items either priced higher than new, dirty or missing prices. Seems like they are more about trying to stare you down before you ever come in the store. I have never stepped foot in there again and won't. Anytime someone asks about there I tell them to go elsewhere. read more

An errand took me into this neighborhood and on a whim I went inside. I was very pleasantly surprised to find the largest selection of sofas and kitchen utensils of any thrift stores I frequent, at very attractive prices. There is also a large inventory of furniture pieces which are modern imitations of antique styles. Some very nice, but usually large and hard to move. They do deliver. The clothing selection for men is so-so, shoes quite elegant, and the book section not too intriguing. I frequent Goodwills and St. Vinnies in Salem and Albany and were I in the market for a sofa I would absolutely come here first. read more

Nice folks when they came to look at my furniture and remove it for their store. Really made me feel good to donate. Enjoy their store however when looking for clothing can be hard to find decent quality. Now I take clothing etc that I have to them instead of the closest resale use store. read more

My husband and I have supported Teen Challenge for years. When we moved back to Salem, it was natural for us to go to Teen Challenge for furniture. Because we are both 65 year old physically disabled veterans. we cheerfully pay extra for delivery. The workers we dealt with were all very enthusiastic and respectful. The management was not as respectful when problems with the delivery came up. 1. They knew we had steps. That was made clear in every dealing we had. And yet the driver of the truck had a meltdown over taking stuff up the steps. 2. After we called the store they agreed to take everything but the sofa up. They did not. They left the dining room table, a bookcase and the sofa. 3. I had to hustle two 14 year old to take the rest of the stuff upstairs. Interesting that these two young boys could handle what two grown men would not. 4. They did not deliver all the items we had purchased. I talked to one of the workers, who was very kind, but i still haven't heard from the manager about the missing items. I am very disappointed in the behavior of the management in this matter. I do not feel they are standing by their word, are not setting a positive or respectful example for the workers in the program, and are not willing to take ownership of the problem to resolve it. read more

Big store, lots of stuff to look through. Unfortunately since they are not Goodwill or Salvation Army they sometimes get some of the lesser quality stuff. But I find their prices are very reasonable and almost every day of the week they have 30-50% off everything and then 50-75% colored tags as well. So there may be some digging, but you will find some treasures. Sometimes you will find things here that you won't find at the other stores because they sell them as fast as they can. This store isn't as busy as they are so your chances of finding that rare gem is higher imo. read more

BIG thrift store. Bigger than most in Salem. Unfortunately, it's pretty creepy inside. The interior is super dark and the place crowded with a whole lot of stuff. Most I wouldn't consider sellable, but what the heck do I know about stinky deep freezers? The staff are super nice, so they get an extra star for that. My experience with Teen Challenge was shocking to say the least. My mom recently passed away from cancer and she left some household items behind. She had always been a supporter of Teen Challenge, making several donations over the years. So I thought, in her honor I'll have Teen Challenge stop by her house and pick up some donations. Keep in mind, this place is supposed to be a Christian organization. My experience with them was more like hell on earth. I arrived at Teen Challenge on Wednesday October 24th at the back loading door to pick up some boxes. I picked up some cardboard boxes there previously a while back and they were friendly and helpful then. Not this time. A guy opened the door and I asked if they had any boxes to pick up. He said they didn't. He said they don't take donations on Wednesdays so therefore, no boxes. He double checked and yelled to someone in the back if they had any boxes. Someone else came to the door. This second guy was helpful and explained why they didn't have boxes on Wednesdays. I then told him that I have some items to donate. He then pointed to a phone number on the side of a Teen Challenge truck across the parking lot and told me to call that number to schedule a pickup. I then asked if I could just tell him directly that I needed a donation pickup. He thought about it for a second and then told me to walk around to the front door. I met him inside, he walked me to the back to speak to management to arrange for the donation pickup. I then spoke to a guy in management. I gave him the address and phone number of the pickup. We scheduled it for Monday Oct. 29th. He then asked me for a gas money donation. I declined by telling him I'm giving them several hundred dollars worth of free stuff that they are going to turn around and sell. I figured that would more than cover the cost of gas. Then he asked if the items were boxed up. I said no, some items were on some tables in the garage and they can choose what they want to take and leave what they didn't want. He said everything has to be in boxes and they don't have time to sort through things. I said ok but I needed some boxes since it's going to take quite a few to box all of the items up. But of course, they don't have boxes on Wednesdays. I asked when they might have boxes I could pick up and they said to come by Friday afternoon and I could pick them up. I asked a manager AND someone else to please hold some boxes for me. On Thursday I was in the area and decided to stop by a day early and see if they happened to have some boxes available. I went to the back loading door again and found out they had 50 boxes or so, but they had all been broken down and placed in the recycle bin. I mentioned that I had spoken to several people just a day earlier and was told they would save me some boxes I could take. An extremely rude guy then said that HE is management and that I didn't talk to HIM about any boxes. Now, you would think he would check with the other folks that I had spoken with the day before, but he didn't. He then proceeded to show me the recycle bin and said I could take the dirty, broken up boxes and tape them back up. I mentioned that I had spoken to several people the day before and was told they would save me some boxes to pick up later. Then they said I could go somewhere else to pick up boxes. I told them I had a donation pickup scheduled for Monday and since they were so disorganized that I was doubting they would even show up on Monday. Of course, no one stepped up to double check the pickup schedule. I was told that if you're on the schedule we'll be there. I wasn't convinced. I then explained the story of my mom passing away and since she liked Teen Challenge I would donate her household items in her honor. They didn't really seem to care that my mom passed away. They didn't seem to care about my donations. I asked if this was a Christian organization and one guy said, "That has nothing to do with this". I responded by saying, "Yes, it does". Another rude guy walked away and loudly proclaimed, "I'm not a Christian!" They were extremely disrespectful and rude. Only one person listened to me and did acknowledge that sometimes as Christians "we fall short". I then told him this is more than just falling short, this is bottom of the barrel. I then got in my truck to drive away and another rude guy walked outside yelling and asking me for the donation pickup time we had scheduled earlier on Wednesday. He told me they were cancelling the pickup. I told him the date and time of the Monday pickup, I shook my head in disbelief and drove away. I will never work with Teen Challenge again. Absolutely terrible. read more

First, some background on exactly what Teen Challenge is, for those of you who don't know (this is from their website:) "Teen Challenge provides recovery services for those who desire to transform their lifestyle and develop a new life free from the devastation of drug and alcohol abuse." The program is affiliated with Assemblies of God and operates mainly as a sort of "inpatient" program, from what I understand of it. On the practical side, I agree that the space is kind of dark and dismal, but I think it's because the space is so huge. My take is that they must be trying to conserve energy, otherwise every light would be on in that huge space, right? The other practical matter is that I have found countless awesome finds at this place (especially kitchen/craft finds,) but you most definitely have to spend time. They carry furniture, home goods, albums/books/media and clothing (though I've always steered clear of the clothing... it looks and smells a little on the undesirable side for my taste.) So, if you're a serious thrifter, it's a must-go. You may leave empty-handed, but my guess is you will find something you didn't know you were looking for! read more

The atmosphere would be a little more comfortable if say, the walls were painted, or it was decorated maybe? It was a dark and kind of gloomy inside. With that being said, they have some super killer deals! We happened to hit the store when they had everything for 50% off. And random tagged items were 75% off! Not only was the store full of many great items, but I happened to hit it just right with them offering everything in the store at 50% off the price tag. While I was able to pick up my own couch, they do offer delivery for $45. I was very impressed with the helpful and friendly staff. I called TC Salem Saturday to donate a king size select number bed. The person who answered the phone took my name, number, address, said someone would call Monday morning for pick up. I arranged for my parents to stay at my house while I was at work. After calling teen challenge 6 times Monday with no one answering the phone, I called the regional office at 2:00. She could not get anyone to answer the phone either. She said she would try a couple of cell phones and call me back. She never did. I tried Salem 1 more time and did get Nate to answer. He said they were booked out to July 10th. I was not happy as my parents were waiting at my house and the guy I spoke to Saturday did not tell me that. Nate put me on hold to get the manager but after being on hold for 4 minutes the phone went to dial tone. They ask for donations but obviously don't want them. read more

One of my family members mentioned that Teen Challenge would come take a large item off my hands, as it had been sitting in storage and I needed to get rid of it. When they actually got a look at it, they said they couldn't take it for their store, but could dispose of it on my behalf, for a small fee. It was in really bad shape and not able for resale. I was more than happy to pay the fee. It was such a relief because nobody on Craigslist wanted to buy it. The movers were very professional and helpful. read more

This store is more than a store to me. Everyone that works there is so very very kind and helpful. I recently got my first apartment in years and i got most of my furniture and decorations, pots and pans there for a very reasonable amount of money. When i go in it is like seeing family. Teen Challenge is often overlooked for donations because of it's location. I'll comment on some of the reviews I read. First lighting, do you know the cost to light and heat that huge building? A coat of paint? Seriously? Without better quality donations from all of us in the Salem area, they can't afford a coat of paint, nor the lighting. I have seen success stories from the program and I'm proud to shop at Teen Challenge thrift store, it's not so creepy if you keep in mind the costs involved in running the program and the store. read more
