I have been shopping at the Daue House since I was a little girl and was excited to go back last weekend when I was back in town. I've always loved it! It's a wonderful thrift shop on the higher end, with profits going to the Assistance League of Salem. This beautiful old historic house is an absolute treasure trove, split up into many smaller rooms that must be explored at least once or even twice each visit. Like many stores that do consignment, prices are on a sliding scale and are reduced after certain lengths spent sitting in the shop. They can be reduced up to four times, meaning you can get a real bargain if you're patient and lucky (for example, I almost bought a cute set of sake cups that was originally $8 and on its last markdown to $2). While I have always loved picking up items from thrift stores on my travels, as I find more unique things and memories that you can't buy in a souvenir shop, I have to say that our trip to Daue House on Saturday was beyond fruitful. In what may be my find of 2013, I bought a set of four copper Moscow Mule mugs for $11.25 (originally $15 but they sat in the shop for a month or so - why? how?). I also found a $10 chip and dip bowl from the House of Myrtlewood in Coos Bay that matches a salad set I was given recently, owned by my late grandmother. Heirlooms, to me. My aunt found two lovely framed prints of two small villages in Germany, both of which she lived in as a child so she bought one for my dad. The collections of crystal, china, silver and gold flatware, dish sets and vintage kitchen items like Pyrex, Corningware, Jadeite and many others were large and in perfect condition. There were newer things as well - I wish I had room to take home the Crate & Barrel soup tureen and six small matching bowls I spied upstairs. Another family member took home a gorgeous blue gradient Lodge enameled cast iron dutch oven for a steal and we cooked in it that same night. Some of the clothing, especially suits and dresses, were a little bit dated but other racks were pretty current. I almost took home a BCBG sweater dress for just $10. This is a great organization to support with friendly volunteers staffing the register. read more
