I didn't plan on visiting a Chinese grocery store while traveling in Europe, but well, we need bottles of water and a few basic things, and this is a supermarket we pass by. They have a surprisingly nice selection of Asian stuff, including shelves and shelves of instant noodles. Good to know should the craving hits. On the other hand, their fresh produce section is rather limited and a bit sad looking. I remembered I want to buy some cheese but their Portuguese cheese and ham selection is smaller than the average markets here. However, near the cashiers, they have gift sets of port wines and other Portuguese stuff great for travelers to take home. There is a line of sardines with really cute packages, like Godzilla attacking Lisbon, or a sardine in a Portugal #7 soccer uniform, I ended up buying a few. There is also a food booth near the exit, that sells Chinese noodles and pancakes. I didn't get to try them, I usually opt for local cuisines while traveling, but again, good to know should the craving hits...

"Maybe a dingo ate your baby." (Elaine/Seinfeld)…read more Conveniently located about a block from my hotel, Pingo Dingo (called Pingo Doce by some) became a frequent stop for me to pick up water bottles and other staples during my time in Lisbon. One of my favorite things to do when traveling abroad is to wander the aisles of grocery stores on the prowl for good deals, amusing products, and wild Australian dogs. The aisles of Pingo did not disappoint! Star Wars obsessed? Check out the Jabba the Hutt fish in the seafood section! Fan of the Two-Buck Chuck? Pingo has a full wall of wines under $5. Kermit is your spirit animal? Muppet eye special in aisle 3! Take note that items from the deli and pastry section must be paid for at that counter. There is also a check-out line reserved only for pharmacy items. Pingo also houses the entry to the "secret" Castelo Elevador, which will lift you most the way up to St. George Castle. Overall this chain grocery store is a fantastic pit stop to load up on refreshments, basic needs, and cheap pastries. Next time some obnoxious woman complains, "I've lost my fiancé, the poor baby," put on your worst Australian accent and let her know he's at the Pingo Dingo!

One of the best, simple breakfast deals in town!…read more My wife saw a little group of people loitering near the entrance just prior to the 800 am opening, and as soon as they opened, they rushed inside. So curiously we followed the crowd and they all had congregated in the bakery and deli area. The prices are VERY affordable as compared to the tourist trap stores. A lot of the locals shop here and this market is always busy! So if you want a cup of coffee with a Custard tart, or coffee with a nice buttered bun, combined, it cost us 2.09 euros! There is a small sitting area to eat your stuff, but the unsaid expectation was to "eat and run" since a steady stream of people were also taking this opportunity for a great deal! A convenient location to get groceries as our hotel was also right down the street!

What can I say? It's a supermarket! (Lol!) The stores we've visited were well-appointed, stocked, and modern. If you like meats and fish, they've got it all fresh. Being plant-based, Pingo is not the most stocked as far as those items go; but, it does contain a number of products for us. And, too, the prices are all very comparable, if not cheaper, than what we pay back in our local Hannaford back in the States. In sum, Pingo Doce is a very fine supermercado to go to when in Lisboa! :D
