We were staying at the Melia Lisbon Oriente, so when we saw the market we knew we would be set for our stay. This store has everything you need. Flowers, food, wine, clothing, its a one stop shop for everything. We love this store, reminds me of a trader joe's in the USA. This location is literally 5 minute walk from our hotel. Highly recommended location. Specially if tou want to take something when traveling on the railroad or the bus, instead of buying it at the stations.. read more

This is a very supermarket located inside the Vasco da Gama shopping center on the bottom floor. They sell gluten free bread. Amazing selection of wine, cheese, fresh seafood. They also sell some non-grocery items. We learned later on our trip and this location has very large and the selection is better than other locations. read more
Yes, I am going to write a review about a hyper-market. We flew in to Lisbon, and had a couple of hours to burn before we headed up to Porto by train, and wanted a few things to tide us over for the 3 hour ride. The selection of items was incredible, and even the staple items were so much better than we can find in most US supermarkets. Yes, a lot of this is true throughout Portugal - they simply expect better value from basic foodstuffs than we do. The selection of fresh cheeses, bread baked on premises, and meats were outstanding, and prices quite low. The range of packaged juices was also very good, and no shortage of decent local wines as well. And then of course are the pasteis! I wish we had these stores in the US - I would shop there all the time. And yes, my wife does think I'm a bit nuts when it comes to Continente, but she does humor me!! read more

I secretly found out that this supermarket has the best Pasteis de Nadas, the signature Portuguese tarts. And the good news is that this is a supermarket chain and you can find it everywhere, not having to come all the way to the Oriente. I found it by an accident - On my way back from Porto to Lisbon by train, the train was supposed to arrive at the station Apolonia at 9 o'clock at night which is close to the downtown area and also the last stop. I had no clue it was a bit delayed. So at 9 sharp, the train stopped and most of the people on the train got ready to get off. I was exhausted, couldn't understand anything the conductor said, and it was all dark outside. So I didn't think too much before following them. When I got on the platform, I weirdly saw two people still on the train, and the train continued. Soon I realized that the train station was different from where I originally left - it was much bigger, more modern, and prettier than Apolonia. Shoot I got lost. I was so starved and had totally no clue where the hell I was. I soon found there was a large mall across the street and it was still so busy at 9 o'clock on a Sunday night. I hopped over and that's how I got lost again in this hypermarket (yes, on the sign in the mall, it's called hypermarket, not supermarket) because it was just huge. I found several gems here - first of all, the Pasteis de Nadas were freshly baked when I bought them at late night. They are six in a box for just 2.2 euros and were as crispy and delicious as the best ones I bought at Pasteis de Belem in my previous review. At the seafood section, I also found freshly cooked shrimp for 10 euros per kilo - yes, over two pounds. Blame the ocean currents of the Atlantic please - shrimps in Lisbon are just sweeter than shrimps at home, in my opinion. To buy the seafood here, you have to go to the ticket machine next to the counter and push the button for peixe to get a ticket with a waiting number. Besides shrimp, I also found the rotisserie chicken here very delicious. They sell a small portion in a box here so you don't have to buy a whole or half. Also, a big selection of Portuguese wines that you can find in this supermarket. They close at midnight and the self-check-out machines are very easy to use with an English option. Oh by the way, thank god they also have the wifi so I eventually figured out how to get back to my hotel after finding out all these gems. read more
This hypermarket has lots to offer, and it's open till midnight. I am especially excited with the self service orange juicer. €2.99 for a whole liter of fresh juice, we practically stopped by every day to buy a bottle. I also did a bunch of souvenir shopping here, to share with my friends back home. The cheese section is amazing, taking up four aisles, with lots of cheeses from Portugal, as well as imports. I got some wheels of Azeitao to take home. It's €6 a wheel but over 3 times at home back at the U.S.! The charcuterie selection is huge as well, they have a series of ham from different regions of Portugal. I'd so love to get one of each and see which one is my favorite. In the bakery department, near the seafood, they have a shelf that sells some souvenir style sweets. The chocolate salami (no meat in it, just fudgy dark chocolate with small white cookie pieces that resembles salami slices) is divine, they also have ovos moles and other stuff that make great gifts. This place is always busy, long line for register especially on Friday pay days. However, you can self check out and save yourself some time. The screen is in Portuguese but if you've ever used self check out you more or less know the routine. And oh, BYOB - bring your own bag. Like many places outside U.S., you have to pay for plastic bags if you don't have your own. read more
