After having trained at Nelson's Boxing for so long, I was curious to see how Jose can carry on his legacy. I have to say, my expectations were blown away. Nelson's always had that cozy but team-oriented atmosphere, but his space was always limited. Superb fixes that problem by being twice as big but still maintaining that intimate feeling. Coaches are always judged by how many members they have or how many medals their students win, but numbers lie and competitions are fleeting. The true measure of success is how many lives you're able to change for the better, and what kind path you can set your students on. By this criteria alone, Superb stands in a class all on its own. However, there are some cons to this place. CONS: 1. I lost weight, and the coach refused to help me find it. He said its better off me, and to this day is adamant that I keep it away. 2. The kids are vicious monsters that can hit the speed bag faster than grown men and can go on the Jacob's ladder for 30 minutes straight. They are allowed to roam freely, terrorizing the adults. 3. There's a gigantic stack of Jack in the Box coupons, always tempting me to ditch my training and to inhale down some greasy tacos and Jumbo Jacks. These coupons aren't hidden, and always a clear and present danger (to my waistline). So unless you have some weird need to hang onto your excess weight and are against family-friendly atmosphere, you owe it to yourself to give Superb Boxing a look. Superb Gym is aptly named. Jose, the owner, was the head coach for the last few years at Nelson's Gym which was 4 doors down from where Superb Gym is currently located. I had wanted Jose to take over that gym for me the last couple of years, but he didn't feel he was ready. When health issues warranted that I close my gym, Jose finally took the risk and opened a gym with twice the space and has created a gym unlike any other in Los Angeles. Jose is one of the most understated people I know. He has a Bachelors Degree in Sports Management and rarely shares his professional history of working in the Special Needs community for many years. Compassion comes easily to him which makes him an ideal boxing coach. He knows how to motivate his boxing students from 6-60 with an attitude that makes you want to work your hardest in one of the most difficult sports there is. Jose has a way of breaking skills sets down into pieces that are easy to acquire, execute and integrate as you progress with the sport. One thing that separates out Superb from other gyms is Jose's custom that when you walk in the gym, whether you've been there from the beginning or you just walked in the door is that you are encouraged to walk around and say hello to every person in the gym when you arrive and to say goodbye to everyone before you leave. There are no strangers at Superb, and every person feels like they are on the same team.....because they are. Members forge great friendships, and the time spent training is always interspersed with great banter and easy fun. Unlike other gyms, there is rarely a moment that you don't hear laughter in the gym because the energy is so positive and the atmosphere so supportive. Don't get me wrong. Jose is a task master. He will get the last drop of sweat out of you that you've got......and you will love him for that. There will be many days when you will leave the gym and wonder how you ever did what you never thought you'd be able to do. There are boxers at every level -- from beginners to certified amateurs to professionals that you'll be rubbing shoulders with. Everyone is happy and willing to help one another get better in this challenging sport. The women who come are amazing as they find their inner "Rocky" and hit those heavy bags, speed bags or pads with Coach and find something within themselves that they never knew they had come to find. Boxing is like that. Perhaps the professional accomplishment in Jose that has entertained me the most is watching him coach groups of really young kids. His ability to get them centered and teach them boxing in a way that encourages their strength and skills without making them bullies. He has a way of making them understand that helping each other is what boxing is all about. He always says to them....."We are all in this together. I know it's hard, but think of the person beside you who may need encouragement to finish that set or round." His kids' classes are like none i have ever seen in any boxing gym. He gets the very best out of them and they are proud to progress for him. One key to Jose's success is that no matter what kind of day you've had...you ALWAYS feel better because you came in for that workout. Jose makes you feel like you're the only person in the room and the rest of the people feel like their day is better because you were in it. I believe one of the best gauges of a special place is that you are always surprised by how late it is when you are ready to leave. This is a great establishment owned and managed by the "Great Jose." The whole gym has been renovated and all the equipment is brand new. The monthly membership fee is also super reasonable. This gym embodies what majority of gyms are missing. You have great trainers to provide 1 on 1 training to get to the next level whether that be for your school, amateur or pro. With that said, they are not too big to spend time with newcomers or beginners and help develop their basics even if they're not training you. It's a family environment, you have kid classes and adult classes but what mostly stands out is the care for one another. They are truly genuine about your self improvement, ever since I have began training here, everyone has been warm and respectful. You're never around strangers as people will come up to you and introduce themselves as well as show you a thing or two if they notice you don't possess that much boxing knowledge.
