We've been coming to Super Pollo for years now. It's probably THE BEST chicken you can get in Southern CA. The chicken is marinated and topped with garlic butter (butter with chinks of chopped garlic) and flame broiled right in front you. You'll fully understand Super Pollo right when you walk inside and get a waft of the delicious chicken cooking. They sell burritos, tacos, nachos, etc but it's the chicken combos you wanna eat (whole, half or quarter combo) the combo is accompanied by fresh pico de gallo, warm flour tortillas, rice, beans and a nice spicy salsa. Make sure you ask for a side if garlic butter. I spread the garlic butter on the tortilla then add chubks of chicken, some rice and pico de gallo and devour the mini burrito. I almost gave this a 4, kind of like when I haven't watched tv in a decade and I get excited about commercials and think they are awesome. I didn't order the chicken but the bf did. I ordered myself a fish taco combo with beans, rice, side of guacamole & sour cream and a lemonade and got a fish burrito combo. However, my meal was as epic as can be....EXCEPT that the guacamole was of the Costco variety, slimy with more onions and tomato than avocado. This review is about customer service. Food is good and business must be booming, because they obviously could care less about their service. Called in an order for a breakfast burrito at 830 am and was told it would be ready in 15-20 minutes. As I have, plenty of orders before, I realized that they get busy so I gave it some more time and drove down to pick it up at 9:10 am (40 minutes later). Well, my order was not ready. In fact they hadn't even started it. Place was dead and did not seem at all busy. In fact, the cook was just standing around. When asked why my burrito was not cooked, I was given some lame excuse (no apology). Now, I'm pretty patient and I've given them the benefit of the doubt when I've called in orders before, but this has now happened to me a few times and I don't have time to stand around for you to "now" make my order. HENCE WHY I "CALLED" IN AN ORDER. Worst part is, that they seemed to care less when I voiced my complaint to them face to face. Again (I guess with Super Pollo) if the food is good who cares if the service isn't? Well, I'm big on customer service (I am in the customer service industry) and could care less about the food if the people working there don't care about their patrons. this is a hidden grilled chicken shop worth looking for on the southern end of costa mesa. the place is small and does a brisk takeout business. it is a casual spot with about 8 tables; 4 inside and 4 outside -there is no table service, you place your order at the counter and wait for your number to be called. the chicken basically starts out on the grill butterfly and lightly seasoned -probably a simple brining so you can taste the freshness of the poultry. there are optional toppings like butter, garlic, or chili seasoning that you can order to give your bird a little flavor twist after it is pulled off the grill. if you like beans and rice, both are pretty outstanding and worth having with the grill chicken. I would highly recommend getting the super chicken taco if you haven't tried it yet. it is about the size of a mini burrito or a super sized street taco. the taco is relatively simple, it has grilled chicken, shredded lettuce, and a healthy dollop of guacamole. because everything is fresh and lightly seasoned, you can get a nice clean taste of the chicken. my favorite item to order at this place. read more

I've been meaning to eat here for over 2 years yet it was never one of those places that I thought "today's Super Pollo Day". But I finally did try it - ordered the 1/4 chicken combo and the better half got a chicken burrito. The chicken tasted great, although a bit dry. The wing that came with it was so shriveled that I tried to get some meat from it, but it was more like jerky. The burrito was fresh and tasty, although I think should've been livened up more with some spice. Be careful of the parking, because if you have a large car, you'll be sticking out onto the street. After a day of kayaking and soaking up the sun, the fella brought me to Super Pollo to replenish ourselves. The only thing I recall him raving about was the signature Lemon Garlic chicken and how it's the best thing on the menu. Easily sold, we ordered the 1/2 chicken combo and a side of carne asada nachos (my personal fave bar type food.) The Lemon Garlic chicken was amazingly tender and moist on the inside with a zesty crisp on the outside. I would have liked more, but the butter on top of the already greasy rotisserie-like chicken was a tad too much for my palette. I however, indulged in the tasty nachos! Nothing out of the ordinary, just your plate of chips, guacamole, sour cream, beans, cheese, and choice of meat. I, however, especially liked the chips because they were thicker cut (thicker cut = crispier and maintains texture longer!) One downsize about the place is the sparse parking. When you call and try to order, they tell you to visit their official website (which isn't available because they didn't pay their hosting fees). This hole-in-the-wall spot is located in good ole Costa Mesa. It's about 5 minutes from my casa, and I always happen to drive by it. You can't miss their logo of a chicken dressed in Superman attire. Or should I say Super Pollo attire? Anyway, I always said to myself "I need to eat there one day". Finally, that day arrived. I know this placed is called "Super Pollo", but their asada super nachos were awesome! Order the jr. size nachos because the regular size is a beast. Unless of course you are a beast and can handle that much food. The asada was cooked well, and the chips weren't bad either. I can recommend this on your first try here. Since this place is famous for their chicken, I had to order something on the menu that contained some pollo. I'm a sucker for flautas, and whenever I see them on a menu, I order it. Chicken flautas to be exact. If you don't know what flautas are, they're basically a bigger, crispier, flakier, version of the taquito. If you don't know what a taquito is, well god help you. I've had better flautas elsewhere. The flautas here were a bit soggy. It could be from the fact that they were surrounded with guacamole and sour cream. I love both of those, but I suggest putting them aside from the flautas because I love them crispy. The chicken inside wasn't a big deal. Tastes just like any other chicken. No wow factor whatsoever. I need to try their regular flame broiled chicken next time to evaluate what they're known for. I'll give them 3 Stars for now until that day comes. More often than not the chicken is moist and flavorful but there are times it's a tad dry. The chicken comes with corn or flour tortillas and salsas, the pico de gallo being spicy and delicious! To me this place is essentially a local and much better version of an El Pollo Loco or Pollo Tropical. Limited seating inside and out. Fast and friendly service. Self professed grilled chicken aficionado here. Wanted to see what's so Super about this place. Here's a hint - it's the garlic lemon butter sauce that they slather on the chicken. Ordered the quarter chicken combo with leg and thigh. It was served with rice, beans, salad, tortillas, pico de gallo, and a nice red salsa that's not too spicy. The chicken is perfectly flame grilled so that the skin is slightly crispy. Just the way I like it. Then they pour over "the sauce" and give it a dash of paprika which adds smokiness and color. I strongly recommend the "Quesadilla Supreme" it is by far the best thing you will ever try.
