From having a 5 min healthy discussion on preferences of wing-tip sirloin and ribs of beef I was given a sneeky peep round the back. These guys provide the beef for the best steak places in Glasgow. I'd eaten at one of them earlier in the week and my eyes were bulging at the trays of chateaubriands and rib in sirloins. So, as you'd expect, their meat is very well sourced and as good as you're going to get anywhere. I took a1kg 1rib Angus and pan roasted it in butter and wilted rosemary to get a good sear, then a quick 15 mins in the oven. I had it sat on some roasted beetroot puree with a port, wine and fresh beef stock reduction and the beef was some of the best I've ever eaten. Superb quality and ageing. Week after I wanted a lamb rump as I had the hunger for some dauphinoise. They were happy just to prep some up straight away, no fuss. The lamb was delicious........as was the dauph ;) ........and the sausages. Get the Italian fennel ones and slow cook cook them in your tomato sauce for pasta. Very, very impressive. Prices are as you'd expect for meat of this quality. Look on the window for weekly £10 deals. Steak and chicken. Well worth it.

Walk by often enough, but was compelled to go in today noticing the £10 offer which includes 2 sirloin steaks, 2 pork loins, 4 steak lorne sausages and 4 pork sausages. And if that doesn't make you want to go as well, you're either a vegetarian, or just plain ole crazy (yes, those are different). Nice decor, welcoming, with a good layout and professional staff. Excellent selection of all sorts, including lamb burgers that are absolutely getting destroyed next visit. Delighted with my purchase today and will return. Enough said.

In the past I had never seen it in their display but came on the of chance, I asked the server if there was any, and I was in luck there was a stock pile in the fridge. Butcher: "Oh sorry, someone else has already ordered lamb shanks." Me: "OK....do you only have one lamb??" Next call Thomson Brothers; Me: "Hi, could I order some lamb shanks please?" Butcher: "No problem, sir. How many? For Friday? See you then." On the day, a cheery welcome, some good banter and some superb shanks, all wrapped and ready to go. In terms of quality & size, more like lion shanks than lamb. The shop looks small from outside but is extremely well appointed.has a fantastic selection of meat, including steaks, beef olives, sausages, black pudding...you name it, they've got it. I'm going to be eating more meat, for an excuse to visit my not-so-local butcher.

I was drawn in by that immediately and knew that a steak pie would be on the menu in our house that night. First up, this is probably one of the friendliest shops I've been in. And in Glasgow, where most people are super-friendly as standard, that's saying something. The butcher had loads of chat/banter and was really helpful and kind. He knew customers names (not mine, I've never been there before and I assume he isn't psychic) and generally had a really warm demeanour that would make me return just for the chat. Onto the pie. I ended up buying 2 individual steak pies and 2 chicken pies (he was a good up-seller, too) for just over £6 which I thought was a really good price. I forgot to ask him how long they needed in the oven but with the help of Chef Google, I stuck them in for 20 minutes at 180 which was perfect. And my, what delicious pies they were. Properly filled with nice chunky bits of steak and a delicious gravy, I'm not sure I can remember having a better pie. The pastry was lovely and they were a great size for dinner. Will I go on a mission to see if they really are the best steak pies in Glasgow? Probably not - now I've discovered here I'm not sure that I'd bother going anywhere else.

While, doing so I especially take pleasure in 'investigating' their steak pies. It's kinda a foodie fetish. In a nice, wholesome good girl way. Anyway, I was very pleasantly surprised with this butcher's (though admittedly it doesn't take all that much to win me over when I know I'll have a full belly within a couple of hours - if that). It is fairly small which gives it a cosy, friendly and homely feel reminiscent of my Grandma's kitchen when she used to rustle up mince and tatties. This buyer friendly atmosphere is really helped by the chatty staff who are more than happy to provide cooking tips for marinading cuts of meat or recommending the best cut choices and cooking methods/times. Indeed, if it wasn't for receiving this well founded advice, I am certain I could very simply ruin even a 'stick in the oven' steak pie. Just ask the boy... Now, onto the steak pie. Mmmm. It is delicious. There are a range of sizes so you can have a small one to do you for a tasty dinner treat or a massive one to do a traditional dinner party or pretend to the folks that you've actually learnt how to cook. Either way, it's a good idea. The meat is really tender; the sauce thick, savoury and most importantly not too salty and the crust just perfect. If steak pie isn't your thing (???) they also have a good range of other meat products as Eleanor mentions as well as poultry, seasonal game and fresh rolls.

If the length of queue to pick up your Christmas order is anything to go by then I knew I was on to a winner. I queued for over an hour on Dec 23, while heavily pregnant, to pick up my order. I can honestly say it was worth it, as Christmas lunch was fantastic! I have paid several visits to this butchers since then and I can reassure that although this is a busy little place the queues aren't normally as long as at Christmas! I have sampled several of their award-winning sausages, and can report that their pork & leek sausages are delicious! They also have a great range of prepared meals ready to go in the oven. From these I love their chicken fillets in a white wine sauce. If you like your steaks visit on a Monday and if you buy two steaks you get a free sauce to go with your steak. I have bought their rib-eye steaks which are deliciously beefy and tender. If Muirhead is out of your reach, then do check out their website as they have an online ordering and delivery service. If you can though, it is worth a visit. Although it is a little small, the shop is pristine and the produce is well presented. There are often daily or weekly special offers also and a Gold Card loyalty scheme to reward regular customers.

I love this little butchers on Great Western Road…read more The shop its self is quite small with only room for maybe 4 or 5 people in the store, so it can be a little bit of a squeeze when they are busy, but Reids has a lovely community feel so no one really minds too much. The staff are so friendly and happily chat away while preparing your order, offering advice on cooking and preparation techniques. Unlike many other butchers in the west end which are more like delis this is a very traditional butcher offering a nice but small range for products. The quality of every thing I have purchased from their has been excellent. Although their range is small they are happy to order things in for you if ordered in advance. They also lay claim to being the producer of my favourite Steak Pie in the city...and I am very very pick about my pies! Lovely little butchers which I uses regularly and have never been disappointed.

Meat is lovely - everything I've had from here has been excellent quality and very tasty. I also picked up some gluten free sausages. They had plain pork, pork and apple, pork and chive as well as beef burgers. As they are gf then they contain no preservatives so they are stored in the freezer. Again, very good quality and reasonably priced too as many butchers charge a premium for offering gluten free. Premises lovely and clean. Good hygiene and staff know their products. I'll definitely be popping in when I'm in the area.
