I've just moved here and as an avid cook I wanted to befriend a good local butcher…read more Well, these guys didn't disappoint. From having a 5 min healthy discussion on preferences of wing-tip sirloin and ribs of beef I was given a sneeky peep round the back. These guys provide the beef for the best steak places in Glasgow. I'd eaten at one of them earlier in the week and my eyes were bulging at the trays of chateaubriands and rib in sirloins. So, as you'd expect, their meat is very well sourced and as good as you're going to get anywhere. I took a1kg 1rib Angus and pan roasted it in butter and wilted rosemary to get a good sear, then a quick 15 mins in the oven. I had it sat on some roasted beetroot puree with a port, wine and fresh beef stock reduction and the beef was some of the best I've ever eaten. Superb quality and ageing. Week after I wanted a lamb rump as I had the hunger for some dauphinoise. They were happy just to prep some up straight away, no fuss. The lamb was delicious........as was the dauph ;) ........and the sausages. Get the Italian fennel ones and slow cook cook them in your tomato sauce for pasta. Very, very impressive. Prices are as you'd expect for meat of this quality. Look on the window for weekly £10 deals. Steak and chicken. Well worth it.

First to review? What is going on, Glasgow Yelpers?…read more This JOINT rests unassumingly on Byres Road and claims to be purveyors of fine meats. They are indeed. Walk by often enough, but was compelled to go in today noticing the £10 offer which includes 2 sirloin steaks, 2 pork loins, 4 steak lorne sausages and 4 pork sausages. And if that doesn't make you want to go as well, you're either a vegetarian, or just plain ole crazy (yes, those are different). Nice decor, welcoming, with a good layout and professional staff. Excellent selection of all sorts, including lamb burgers that are absolutely getting destroyed next visit. Delighted with my purchase today and will return. Enough said.

I'm not really big on just reviewing businesses. Why because I clearly think I 'm such a fantastic…read morerestaurant critic I don't want to lower myself. Or to me it just seems odd to review shops ect but I'm doing my best to come round to the Yelp way of thinking. Meat at Muirs is a local butchers. I really like small local businesses and I try to support them where I can. I don't want to live in a word where Starbucks, or Tesco, or Subway sell me everything I need. Variety is the spice of life as "they" say *. For a relatively small place it is very switched on. You can go on their facebook and see they do an eating challenge, giant man v food style burger www.facebook.com/meatatmuirs.elderslie. They also offer to deliver a cooked breakfast and tea or coffee to hung over people in the mornings for a fiver. If that isn't having your fingers on the pulse I don't know what is. I've never tried the challenge, I've never used the hang over service but do I still think the place is great? YES! Why? Because it's served by real people that know what they're doing. They also do great value parcels, for normal weekday use: stew, mince, porkchops etc breakfast parcels: the usual suspects, BBQ packs: Sausages, flavoured burgers, ribs, chops. I have tried all of these and they are great. During every purchase one of the parcels has contained something which I'd rather not have, or not containing something I really want. They let you swap things about. There is no, umm ... ehh .... I'll need to check with a supervisor. They just do it. The meat is slightly more expensive that if you were to go to a supermarket, but if you get a parcel I think that it is cheaper over all. 1 tip, listen to them. They know what they're talking about. After buying Chinese style pork I was asked how I intended to cook them, after discussing what to do for a while I was recommended a great method, in the oven wrapped in tin-foil with onions (possible peppers) above and below the pork. It was the best way I've ever cooked flavoured pork and since trying it I haven't done it any other way. People of Paisley, whether your hung over, want to eat a gigantic 5 lb burger or just need someone who knows what they're talking about use these guys *Sorry but I don't actually know who "they" are.

I buy my Stornaway black pudding here all the time when I'm passing through, at the side there is a selection of fresh fruit and vegetables, potatoes and fresh eggs. You can order any items that they don't usually stock like turkey's for Christmas & venison. Definitely a place to stop by for all your fresh meats.

Stymied at step 2 when I called a highly-rated establishment in Clarkston. Me: "Hi, I'd like to order some lamb shanks for Friday (3 days away)." Butcher: "Oh sorry, someone else has already ordered lamb shanks." Me: "OK....do you only have one lamb??" Next call Thomson Brothers; Me: "Hi, could I order some lamb shanks please?" Butcher: "No problem, sir. How many? For Friday? See you then." On the day, a cheery welcome, some good banter and some superb shanks, all wrapped and ready to go. In terms of quality & size, more like lion shanks than lamb. The shop looks small from outside but is extremely well appointed.has a fantastic selection of meat, including steaks, beef olives, sausages, black pudding...you name it, they've got it. I'm going to be eating more meat, for an excuse to visit my not-so-local butcher.
