Of course prices are higher than chain grocers except veggies where they are very competitive and generally better produce than the Safeway/Save-ons. We have lived in the area for 20+ years, Sunshine is a real multi-generational family business with strong connections to the community. This place is very convenient. If you need some stuff to hold you over, they got you. Lots of specialty items can be found at Sunshine like Daiya cheese, Gardein products, and ethnic condiments of all types. Prices are definitely higher than supermarkets, but the fruit and veg are some of the freshest found outside Granville Island market. This is definitely a good spot if you live in the neighborhood and are low on essentials, but you can often save enough by simply ordering things from SaveOn to justify their delivery fee. Service here is always friendly, which makes the higher prices sting a little less. read more

This precious little market is nestled between a moderately-priced deli and a terrifying abandoned Blockbuster that represents so many broken dreams and so many unpaid overdue fines. It's a good place! I like that I am most often shamed into buying healthy produce because they are seriously lacking in the highly-processed garbage food that often catches my eye when I'm at a Safeway or another soul-sucking high-priced equivalent. It's like a Whole Foods but with more smiles and less angry rich people. I highly recommend getting your groceries here because it's nice to support a small business for a change. It's worth paying a little extra so you can feel that sense of smug do-gooderness that comes with buying local. read more

I agree with the comments about cleanliness, stock, variety, quality, etc, but I disagree with the price comments. I think this place is one of the more expensive "but at least they have great stuff!" produce-and-staples stores out there, and think perhaps others might not be seeing the same variety of shops? Such a great market! Has just about everything, and just enough of everything, knowwhatimean? For instance, it has a good selection of cereal -- not an overwhelmingly oppressive selection. Really, I don't need twelve different brand extensions of Cheerios. That's why Sunshine Market is great -- just the right amount of everything. Also has a pretty solid amount of health-conscious and natural food, local bread suppliers, and a few packaged, marinated meats. It's like a very small Safeway (in a good way). Great produce selection outside that's very fresh. The checkout clerks are always very friendly and SUPER fast on the till! And, as with every business I enter, needs more pie. ;-) read more

I like that I can rely on the same products being there when I want more. The family that runs the place are calm, industrious and friendly. Fruits and veggies are good! Besides that this is by far the most overpriced market I've ever come across... almost double the price for some things! And my personal favorite is the 25 cent charge they ding you on if you need to buy just an item or two. Credit cards are a part of doing business it's a huge pet peeve when companies do this. read more

Love Sunshine Market! My boyfriend and I affectionately call it The Sunny. They have some of the best prices on cheese in the city. Saltspring Island Goat Cheese for $8.99, while Meinhardt's sells it for $12.99! 200g of Dubliner for $5.49 which is the same price per 100g as Les Amis du Fromage - dealio. They also have the best price on brown (crimini) mushrooms in town - $2.99 per pound, and this price has been the same for the past year. They sell many of my favourite staples; Uprisings Bread, Mutti Passata, Best Gourmet Organic Espresso beans, Olympic Organic Yoghurt, local veg, Kuhne mustard, Kettle Chips, avocadoes (always 2 for $2.50). They rock and they're open until midnight! read more

the best "corner store" in the city. You want it?..they got it. Some of their prices are usual corner store mark up but some stuff is cheaper than your big box stores. Lots of great produce and tons of selection in the store. Not your usual corner store processed foods but lots of fresh meats and dairy too. They started to carry Uprising Bakeries bread after I requested it and are open to any requests. Support a local business.It's convenient in the Oak St hood. These guys have a great selection of gourmet food, though the prices are definitely a little higher than average. I definitely attribute that to being smaller grocery store. The fact that this grocery store is open so late totally outweighs the price factor for me. If I'm coming home just before midnight and have a hankering, I'm totally going to Sunshine Market. It's not the friendliest store, but I really like Sunshine Market for its fresh and beautiful looking produce and its Asian and organic groceries. They stock plenty of items for the health-conscious shopper; there are plenty of tofu items alongside whole wheat pastas and organic cereals. The prices for produce range from moderate to slightly more than average, while the rest of the groceries are probably a bit more than you'd pay in a larger store. But, it is a pleasant experience to shop here in that it's clean and small and tidy. Another thing I like about this store is that it stays open late, until 11 most nights, so if you need a late night snack, this place is great. read more

Nice place. Cheap and good produce, but regular groceries are more expensive. Lots of choice for a small market, and nice because it leans more towards Choices/Capers type stuff rather than Safeway/Buy-Low. My organic/vegetarian girlfriend can always find what she needs here. Open til midnight every night which is nice, but doesn't open until 10:30am. read more

Granted, this market is right next door to my apartment, so I have good reason to like it so much. But if you shop the sales, you will find some pretty darn cheap produce, especially for this neck of the woods. I moved from Vancouver in 1989, we lived on w13th and Oak. The fruits/vegs were always fresh and the staff were very friendly and helpful.

A wonderful neighborhood market that I end up visiting at least once a week. More than just a corner store, this place has a selection of produce superior to that of many big grocery stores. They have a pretty good selection of gluten-free items and organic items that you wouldn't expect at a small market. I have been going to Sunshine Market for about 40 years whenever I am in need of something quickly. They keep their produce fresh, and it is priced comparatively with big stores like Safeway. Some non-produce items are very well priced, and certainly comparable. Good place for eggs, chocolate bars, candy, fruit popsicles, ice cream, Coconut Bliss (!!!), club soda, sodas in general, cheese, pasta--everything you might need without having to drive somewhere! It's a great neighbourhood store, and I am thankful it still exists, given the price of property in Vancouver! read more

This place is usually packed and they have a large selection of vegetables and really cheap prices too. The butcher there is really helpful with custom orders for bones and meat for my dogs. They have a chubby long haired blonde guy with a short beard and blue eyes that is extremely annoying. Constantly asking me to be his girlfriend when I repeatedly tell him no and avoid him. He's supposed to be their security guy who catches shoplifters and I find it extremely unprofessional how he comes into women as soon as they walk in the door. I'm surprised if nobody ever complained and even more surprised if they haven't done something about it. I bought some rotten food there but they did give me a credit tho. So make sure you double check your food to make sure it's not outdated before you buy it! read more

For the size of this market, they sure have a huge selection of goods! We shop there all the time, as they are right on my way home from work.
