Picked up some grapes there, they were delicious and I liked being able to get many types of tofu there too.

Lots of variety, very good prices. I have been introduced to new fruits and vegetables that I haven't seen anywhere else.

Harvests happen in the early morning and are brought to clients within hours after being picked. It's a really special place - I love coming here to water their corn, kale, raspberries, quinoa, grape vines, apples... There are so many things to see in the garden - different beds are dedicated to certain areas - there are the Americas, Europe, Asian greens... A water garden (a pot with water-loving plants) is set up for birds, bees, and insects to drink from. If you live close by or have some free time, you can come and help dig around, harvest the crops and meet the people running this garden. They also host workshops for the community - local experts come to teach the workshops. It's interesting how few of the plants we eat are actually grown around Canada! Their blog has the volunteering opp's and workshops updated regularly. If you want to volunteer, contact Tricia. Volunteer orientations happen every month - after that, you can come and help according to your own schedule. Check their facebook for regular updates: http://www.facebook.com/TheWorldInAGarden Bonus: watch for the hairy kiwi plants tangled along the fence!

Feels like it's more for campus students. It's a lovely location that's near the campus farm. Seems the market could benefit at a more public location to attract more customers.

My original plan for the day was to checkout the Shipyards in North Van., until I saw a post on instagram for the market. So glad I went. The setup was very similar to many of the markets in the Lower Mainland with many of the usual vendors like A Bread Affair, Gingeraki, and Mukasi Coffee; all very good vendors. I even bought a cold brew ($4) from Mukasi. The only vendor that was new to me were the people selling Tamales, wish I took a pic. They had a huge line and it looked as though people were really into the fresh juice they sell. Tough to really "grade" farmers markets since the vendors tend to change every week. I'm giving it 5 stars because I just love farmers markets and there were enough vendors to make the drive to UBC worth it. It's also a very good alternative to the Trout Lake market which is awesome as well, but finding parking there is a chore. Assuming it's nice next week, I'll probably be back.

Growing organically helps to protect biodiversity by encouraging growth of lesser known varieties, which can often be more delicious if only for their rarity! ie. tomatoes - heirloom anyone!? And yes, there's a plethora of other amazing local options: fruits, veggies, beautiful Little Qualicum Cheeseworks samples and goods, jams, breads, food carts, meats -- oh my! I love this particular farmers market more than any other in the city, not only because it's s'damn convenient, but it (out of all of 'em) feels the most urban. It's not trying to be a tra-la-la oasis in the city; rather, is straight-up located in the hub of a busy commuter zone in the middle of the workweek. Genius. There's something so very special about this one. It could be that I run into someone I know each time I go, but everything just tastes a little bit better when I buy it from here. Buying local just feels s'damn good.

From Herban Farm in Pike Place, I got their Pike Place Herbs. When I was in Budapest, I went to the Great Market Hall and got two paprika tins and a taco seasoning blend from the spice shop there. So while doing a lap around Granville Island Public Market and seeing a spice stall with a huge variety of salts and spices, I had to stop by. And I had to restrain myself given how much bag space I had left. Jean-Pierre Coté will warmly greet you as you approach, giving you a rundown of what he has. All of the salts and spice blends are handmade, and the packaging is top notch, featuring the ingredients, a tasting note, and then recommendations on what to cook. They all come in a variety of sizes, from the small 28 gram tins, 50 gram sqaures, to 100 gram bags, 250 gram bags. It will take you some time to consider what you want, and I highly recommend you keep talking with Jean-Pierre about his selection. I was looking for blends I couldn't get anywhere else, and the ones he pointed out were: Turmeric saffron sea salt - hard to miss the bright yellow salt, which he points out you should add a pinch to your rice to really bring out a nice, Mediterranean flavor. I've done so, and it really does change up the flavor profile. English Garden salt seasoning - you most likely will pick up this mix of pink and purples and wonder what is in there. You really need to read this fascinating mix of ingredients featuring vanilla, potatoes, blueberries and a whole lot more, which he points out is amazing on everything from salads to tempura! Egyptian Style Seasoning - This spice blend really stole the show for me. I'm a big fan of cumin, but the hazelnut, coriander, mint and more really stands out. I was so exited by this once I made it home I found a great instant pot recipe for Egyptian lamb stew and I used this as the seasoning. WOW! I was eating it for 3 days (it was a big recipe), but the flavors did not disappoint. If you live in Vancouver or just visiting and love food, or know someone who does, I cannot recommend Maison Cote enough. You are sure to wow yourself or a loved one with one of his blends.
