I'm obsessed with food. Primarily eating it, but I also enjoy cooking it. And due to the latter I'm always on the lookout for interesting spice blends. From Herban Farm in Pike Place, I got their Pike Place Herbs. When I was in Budapest, I went to the Great Market Hall and got two paprika tins and a taco seasoning blend from the spice shop there. So while doing a lap around Granville Island Public Market and seeing a spice stall with a huge variety of salts and spices, I had to stop by. And I had to restrain myself given how much bag space I had left. Jean-Pierre Coté will warmly greet you as you approach, giving you a rundown of what he has. All of the salts and spice blends are handmade, and the packaging is top notch, featuring the ingredients, a tasting note, and then recommendations on what to cook. They all come in a variety of sizes, from the small 28 gram tins, 50 gram sqaures, to 100 gram bags, 250 gram bags. It will take you some time to consider what you want, and I highly recommend you keep talking with Jean-Pierre about his selection. I was looking for blends I couldn't get anywhere else, and the ones he pointed out were: Turmeric saffron sea salt - hard to miss the bright yellow salt, which he points out you should add a pinch to your rice to really bring out a nice, Mediterranean flavor. I've done so, and it really does change up the flavor profile. English Garden salt seasoning - you most likely will pick up this mix of pink and purples and wonder what is in there. You really need to read this fascinating mix of ingredients featuring vanilla, potatoes, blueberries and a whole lot more, which he points out is amazing on everything from salads to tempura! Egyptian Style Seasoning - This spice blend really stole the show for me. I'm a big fan of cumin, but the hazelnut, coriander, mint and more really stands out. I was so exited by this once I made it home I found a great instant pot recipe for Egyptian lamb stew and I used this as the seasoning. WOW! I was eating it for 3 days (it was a big recipe), but the flavors did not disappoint. If you live in Vancouver or just visiting and love food, or know someone who does, I cannot recommend Maison Cote enough. I picked up some of the Maison Cote seasonings at the Granville Market in VAN. Used the Chermoula (Moroccan-inspired seasoning) on lamb. Outstanding! Their Cajun seasoning is spicy and on point too. I met the adorable and charming JP at the Home Show in Spring and I was so impressed with how knowledgeable he is about herbs and spices. He told me about how he travels the globe in search of outstanding products to bring back home. Lately I caught up with Maison Cote again at the Trout Lake Farmers Market and picked up some Hickory Smoked sea salt. (I never even knew such a thing existed). I was amazed at the variety of unique products he has now. Imagine the possibilities! Actually it's hard not to think of all the recipes you can do while you're looking over such an abundance. How about some Champagne Vinegar? It looks like he has over 30 kinds of oils and vinegar flavours. Mmm... fresh baguette dipped in Olive oil and Champagne vinegar. Very romantic. I must admit I am addicted to gourmet vinegars and olive oils. I just love how they enhance the flavors of the food. Our local VOOC is decent but I'd normally ask my friend from Edmonton to bring me some oils and vinegars from Evoolution there (try their Dark Chocolate vinegar when in Edmonton). Now I can add more to this addition - herbs and spices and sea salt. I've discovered Maison Cote at the West End Farmers market. 15 minutes of chat with JP and I've got Smoked Pecan Sea salt and Cowboy Rub - in love with both products. I went to the market again in a couple of weeks with agenda of checking Mason Cote stand. Came back with Tumeric and Saffron salt/Raspberries & Rosemary salt. And Olive Oil infused with Lime. Olive Oil came in a nice glass spray bottle - it doesn't spray too much and allows to use the product spot-on. without wasting precious oils. The quality of the spray bottle is high, I can see it being refilled and used again. JP is incredibly knowledgable about his products. He will ask you what you like and how you like to cook and then he'll make some suggestions for you. He was telling us how he was going to cook a dinner with some fresh ingredient from the market, and I was thinking "Man, I want to make that for dinner tonight too. It sounds so delish". He is passionate about food overall and his products but doesn't press you hard into buying. He has a very good variety and you can also place a special order in case of dietary restrictions. For example, all of the rubs have brown sugar in them. If you're on sugar-free diet, he can make them with half sugar or salt or with no sugar or salt under request. I love farmer's markets because I love to meet the people who handle and pick my food and Jean-Pierre is one of the nicest and funniest people i've ever met! He is so joyous and that happy energy goes right into the wonderful products he creates and you can taste it. My absolute fave is now his hibiscus sea salt which i add to all my vinegar and oil salad dressings. I am not afraid of salt and really we can't live without it as all our cells require it but it requires good quality sea salt like Jean-Pierre makes. Wet salt is even better for you. My new fave salt for cooking curries and stir-fry's is his ginger, garlic & cilantro! OMG yUm! I ran out and seriously my curries were lacking so i placed an order right away. It's really lovely dealing with such a friendly and personable soul...sure beats dealing with faceless companies. Also to try and savour is the champagne vinegar like meyer lemon which the other review mentioned. again use it with oil and another flavoured sea salt for an awesome salad dressing. It's the difference between good and fabulous! Oh and there was this great espresso sugar that transforms regular coffee...ok, i could go on and on. Maison Cote is not to be missed. My partner and I went up to Vancouver for the weekend and found this stand at the farmers marker on Granville island. I am a vinegar enthusiast and had to get some. I brought it home and WOW! It is so rich and thick, more so than any other vinegar I have bought before, and it is amazing. I had some more mailed to my home to try other types and have not been let down.
