Sunshine Caramels were the favor at our son and daughter-in-law's wedding. They were a huge hit!

It's one thing to close early, but to post a handwritten sign calling the event "stupid" was shockingly unprofessional. It's figuratively and literally more than a bike race, it's a fundraiser that supports cancer research and survivorship through the CancerFree KIDS Pediatric Cancer Research Alliance. It brings thousands of people together for a cause that matters deeply, while also creating one of the most electric, family-friendly atmospheres you'll find in Cincinnati. From a business perspective, this was a massive missed opportunity. The streets were filled with people eager to support local shops and enjoy the events which is exactly the kind of audience any small business would hope for. Instead of welcoming that energy, Patty's turned it away and insulted the very people walking by their storefront. I love supporting small, local businesses, but this kind of response shows a disconnect from the community that makes Hyde Park special. I hope they reconsider how they respond to events like this in the future.

The staff is welcoming and is generous with the tastings: four of us tried around ten flavors in all! It was a hot day, so this was our last stop by the market, so it would not melt on the way home. We got some bold Rüya dark 65% chocolate, flavored with Turkish espresso, with a touch of traditional cardamom expressing welcome. The cardamom flavoring is milder in this chocolate than it is in mideast coffee. That works for us. We got two with mild bourbon flavors: the somewhat-sweet Prohibition, and the lightly-orange seasonally-available Old Fashioned (reminiscent of the cocktail). We also got some seasonal slightly-fruity limited-edition Thailand 70% chocolate, one of our favorites. And we grabbed an assortment of lighter and darker sweet creams and truffles. We used to watch the bean-grinder in action here. Last year moved it to a new factory on the Licking River across the river in Lexington KY, a town where they also opened a second retail location in 2024 that includes gelato! The aroma here is lovely and chocolatey and roasty. The chocolate is divine.

But it works for them. First off, it's a clean, small, but tastefully decorated space; Secondly, most of one wall is a counter devoted to tasting samples, and you are welcome to have a taste of any or all of them, served by the store staff. Thirdly, they definitely know their chocolate, give good service, and patiently explain each sample, its origins, its level of darkness (in chocolate terms), and its subtle notes. and 4) the chocolate is amazing, and yes, I leave with at least one bar of chocolate, despite the high price. And, during Findlay Market's Fall Food Fest, their sample was hot chocolate -- which was probably the best hot chocolate I've had in my life. It wasn't overly sweetened: it was just the pure flavor of liquid chocolate made with care, good enough to savor slowly as I made my way through the rest of the festival, and to greatly regret when I finished the last of it.
