I booked a small group surf lesson through Vimbly.com for myself and my two kids. I checked in with Suzy the night before our lesson and talked over the details with Chris. They arrived right on time and brought everything we would need including rashguards. We started with some safety instruction and practiced standing on our boards. Then, we were off in the water! Because my son was a little apprehensive, one of the instructors took him tandem surfing so he could get the hang of it. While at times he did hold onto the board for dear life, he also had the courage to stand too! My daughter on the other hand, loved it and stood up on her board her very first try. I was so impressed! My tries were not as successful, but I did manage to get up for a few seconds. I was surprised that I really enjoyed it and it was wonderful to experience something new together. Both instructors were awesome. Very friendly, helpful and always in the water with us which made my kids feel safe. The look of concentration on my daughter's face was priceless and seeing my son stand on the surfboard will be locked in my happy memories forever. Booked a group lesson but was lucky to have a 2-on-1...Just me, my friend, and our instructor Chad. Arrived to beach early and was able to watch some of the lessons take place. First impression: scary! The surfers were way far out, the waves looked big, and I hadn't legit swam in the ocean for over a decade. Seemed like a recipe for disaster. Chad gave me the lowdown and taught us the 4 steps to getting up on the board. Arch, crawl, knee up, and stand. Me being me, I asked a whole lot of questions. How does it feel when the waves hit you? Is it easy to flip over? Are there sharks??! (cuz it's shark week on Discovery channel). He kept it real and didn't sugarcoat anything. Once I was in the water, it was game time. Luckily the instructor took us cruising all the way out into the deep sea. So insane he was able to tow us with his feet. I was the first to go and I was able to stand up!!! Gave me the confidence I needed and I continued to stand up almost every time after that. I say all this to say, Hawaii is the place to try surfing for the first time. Water is warm. The waves, though they seemed big to me, were actually pretty small. Good for beginners. I would also suggest going in a small group. You get more attention. More opportunities to catch the waves. And if you're lucky your instructor will help tow you along so you don't get as tired quickly! Highly recommend Suzy's surf school on the North Shore. It's on a quiet beach and at times you feel like you have the ocean to yourself. Look forward, paddle hard, mahalo. read more

This lesson was the one of the best parts of our trip to O'ahu! We've never surfed in our lives, but Jason and Lucho were so easy to learn from that we were able to get up and surf for the whole time! The beach has very small waves so they're great for beginners. The north shore is definitely worth the trip and much less crowded, plus you get to see sea turtles as you surf by! 110% recommend! read more

My two kids and hubby took a two hour lesson Wednesday 8/1/12. I found Sunset Suzy because groupon offered a deal from a Waikiki group that almost pulled us in. But thankfully I checked yelp reviews and they were bad news.... I had gotten SUnset SUzy's info from another Waikiki surf guy since we were staying up here on the North Shore. He highly recommended her. I emailed her late on Tuesday and called her Wednesday morning to see when we could get in a class. She got us in with Matt and Stephanie at noon that very same day 3miles away. She was very friendly on the phone and texted me directions to the beach. We didn't have to meet at a shop or sign any ridiculous waivers or carry boards for blocks and blocks. The boards are right there on the beach. Matt met us with a smile, gave some brief overview instructions and 15min of concise beach instruction. Then they hit the water. Stephanie came in to help so the teacher to student ratio in our class was 1:2 !!! My kids age 10 and 12 and my 40+ hubby all learned to surf today! They were thrilled! Matt and Stephanie are SUPER patient and nice and helped my 10yr old daughter when she was struggling. We couldn't have had a better experience! Don't bother going ANYWHERE else. Booked this for my wife as a Mother's Day present. It was last minute but Suzy worked with me personally and had the instructor meet us for a semi private session. It was such a good experience and it was very easy making contact with her and the instructor. Our instructor Kenny called us and re confirmed where to meet him at we all got there early and we went right out. He was very nice and professional. One goal of this trip was to take a surfing lesson and stand up on the board. Done and done. Chris and JC made it so easy! Partly because they spent most of the lesson kindly towing us back out--it's definitely a workout even with the help. Booked a group of five early on Labor Day with Chris who was super helpful on the phone. The beach is great for beginners and they get you in the water quick after a short on-the-sand lesson--it's honestly a much better way to learn. Be careful of the shallow part of the beach because it is rocky and there are urchins, but other than that, we all had a blast. Our teachers definitely understood how to approach each student--we all were standing on our boards by lesson's end. Even though I was so tired from paddling back out, it was so thrilling to get back on a wave. If you've been thinking of surfing, doing it on the North Shore with Sunset Suzy's is the perfect time. My wife, myself and my two children (8 and 4yrs old) had private lessons with Suzy today. It was amazing. All of us got to stand up a few times on the boards. They made it seem so easy. My son, due to his age, was taken on tandem surfing with Connor and Connor was wonderful. He was patient, encouraging and we felt our son was very safe with him. Suzy and her brother Matt took car of my daughter and us. Our daughter was initially a little apprehensive but by the end of the lesson, she could not stop talking about surfing. Suzy was super friendly and so easy to work with. There is a public facility next to the beach where we could change and shower. You could also see many turtles in this area also. In fact, there was a turtle that popped up near my wife and daughter during their surf lessons. Surfing is not easy, and I am sure teaching people how to surf is even tougher but Suzy and her friends were ALWAYS smiling and encouraging and made us feel comfortable. We would highly recommend Sunset Suzy for surf lessons. There is a photographer, called Greg, who tagged along to take pictures of us. His pictures made us look like we were extras in Point Break! My girlfriend took surfing lessons through Suzy's school, and she had a blast. By the end of the lesson, she was able to stand through an entire wave. Suzy is very friendly, positive, and she'll teach you everything you need to know to get the hang of things. When we got back to our place of lodging (all the way on the other side of the island), we realized that my girlfriend was missing her wallet. We had visited a couple places on this particular outing, including the surfing lesson, so we tried calling Suzy. Suzy didn't have the wallet in her possession, but in order to save us a long trip, she went to the beach on her day off to ask the other instructors if they had seen it. Hunter was the man! He is a great instructor and helped me get up on almost every wave that he pushed me into. I scheduled a group lesson with 6+ at 10am, but Suzy didn't have a large group. So she had me join in with a smaller group. I got lucky! It was just me and two others. The waves were a good (small) size and I felt safe the whole time, and had a blast.
