This place has a huge selection of seasonal vegetables, sauces, noodles, buns, dumplings, meat and seafood! I come here every week to get my groceries and everything is very cheap. There's also plenty of parking! This grocery store carries Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Indian, Thai, and Korean ingredients. If you're into Asian cooking, check this place out!

Very good supermarket in the Outer Sunset

I'd shopped Sunset Super awhile ago. It's an affordable Asian supermarket where you can buy things that aren't readily available elsewhere or all in one store. Produce offered beautiful Napa cabbage, two kinds of baby bok choy, daikon, seaweed, big bunches of herbs, cooking sauces plus lots of variety in their fresh meat and seafood department. Signage and flooring look like the store hasn't been upgraded in years but the store is very clean and well-stocked. The staff is kind and helped me find items while I shopped and menu planned so I wouldn't have to go out in this bad storm anytime soon. Ambiance feels like the land that time forgot from the 50s and 60s: Some goods were priced to that era like double honey oranges & cocktail grapefruits, not complaining! Sunset Super is a reliable store when on the west side of town. There's a small private parking lot and easy street parking outside.

I usually come here to buy the Vietnamese desserts, fresh soy milk and tofu desserts but I guess they don't carry it anymore. This time I bought a bottle of new version condensed milk, usually in a can. Also get a pack of dried leaweed for soup. I like to go to different grocery stores because they usually carry a different stuff/items, food or snacks. :)

Sunset Super, a great biocontamination establishment. Not recommended for those who value hygiene and food safety.

Okay for vegetables and packaged foods. Yet the meat and fish department practice poor hygiene. And they toss their trimmings into single ply garbage bags that leak blood and then wheel it through store and across street to parking lot, where blood pools into the sidewalk. Really sticks. No hospital or butcher would tolerate this. Why the health department allows this to happen, is another failure of the city. Really, be careful of getting food poisoning here, as there is a huge about of biocontamination on the floors.

    5/19 nicely packaged small items

Don't come in here expecting this place to be H-Mart. This is a typical old school Asian supermart like Pacific Super, or to a lesser degree 99 Ranch. With that in mind, it's a good place to have close by in this neighborhood. Pick your food or canned goods carefully, check the expiry dates and eyeball the meats to see if it pass the fresh test. Wash and cook them thoroughly and you should be fine. Don't expect sashimi grade fish here, but shabu shabu stuff should pass. At checkout, trust but verify the items in your receipt. If there is a discrepancy, complain about it and get it resolved. Then get out so others can park in the spot you've taken.

    They have these. Nuff said.

There's something about their food that immediately gives me that cozy, Filipino feeling, like a little taste of home! Of course, with Filipino cooking, nothing ever beats the flavor of what my mom makes, so it's always hard to call anything "perfect," but this was still really good, rich, and super tender. Definitely not an everyday meal because it's so hearty, but it hits the spot when you're craving something warm and comforting. My boyfriend really enjoyed his bowl too, the broth had a lot of flavor, the wontons were soft, and everything was served hot and fresh. Seating is also super easy, and parking is never a problem, which makes the whole experience even better. Always happy to come back!

Their sashimi selection is incredibly fresh, beautifully cut, and perfectly packaged to-go. I'm a huge fan of their tuna--especially the otoro, chutoro, and akami--but you honestly can't go wrong with their salmon, uni, or any of their other fresh fish selections. Their hot food section is just as impressive and made fresh daily. Whether it's chicken teriyaki, beef teriyaki, salmon teriyaki, sushi bowls, nigiri, chicken karaage, or grilled salmon, everything hits the spot and tastes homemade. What really makes this place special is the family behind it. You'll almost always see Ken, Shu, Misako, or their mother Ryuko, and they make the whole experience feel welcoming and authentic. And if you're into whiskey or just a casual drinker, keep an eye out for their selection--they occasionally carry rare bottles like Yamazaki and Hakushu, which are getting harder to find these days. Overall, Suruki is a gem in San Mateo. Quality, freshness, and great people--what more can you ask for?

Being a member also doesn't get you any additional discounts vs non-members. But hey it's free so it doesn't hurt. I'll always support there being more Asian grocery stores in the West Side of the South Bay. H-Mart always had that spot for me, but now it's shared. Mega Mart's marketed as a more premium store, but it does its best when they're running sales. Price between the two are pretty neck and neck. You'll spend anywhere from $70-$200 per trip cuz the small things do add up. They used to have prepped food marked off anywhere from 30-70% off in the final and early hours of the day. Now, it's an inconsistent luck of the draw. However, I've never had an issue with food quality with anything I've purchased whether it be prepped food or raw ingredients. 4/5, solid store.
