Sunset Ridge has large concrete sites with the lushiest grass I have ever seen. The cost of this lush grass is that it seemed to require daily upkeep. During our 9 week stay, we found that we were unable to relax outside of our rig during the day without being interrupted by the lawn maintenance activities on a nearly daily basis. The lawn mower would pass by the back of our RV several times to cut that area and then return either the next day or several hours later to cut the grass between our sites. Another day the person would come with a powered trimmer to trim the grass around the sites in our section. Then he would come by another day to do the edging around our site. He would come by with a powered leaf blower later on one of those days, or would come the following day. This activity went on during the week days and at least on Saturdays. We never got relief from the constant lawn maintenance as it took place nearly every day of the week, and then repeated the following week, and on and on. It was non-stop lawn cutting.
We did like how convenient the RV park was located to the major shopping and dining in the area, as well as the close proximity to the South Padre Island beaches. We also enjoyed how close we were to the tidal basin bay that often had wind surfers buzzing around. The downside to being close to the tidal basin is how stinky it can be during low tide, which often smelled like sewer gas when we stepped outside.
There is only one building on site which contains 4 showers and toilets, as well as a modern laundry facility, and fitness room.
The showers and toilets did not seem to be taken care of on a daily basis. The toilet paper was not restocked and several time I found no toilet paper when going to use the toilet. The showers did not drain properly. Not sure if this was a drainage issue OR if people were giving their dogs baths in the showers. There was always hair in the drains.
The lack of a club house meant that gatherings for activities, such as pot luck dinners were held in the fitness room which is not very big or inviting for this purpose. In the past they had put up a tent for gatherings but in talking to people it was not the best solution. Since it is windy in Corpus Christi the tent did not hold up in the past and it was hard to have a conversation.
If you visit the website you will notice several amenities that are "coming soon". The office is run out of a shipping container. When we booked our stay the year before, they told us that the office/clubhouse building would be coming soon, along with dog park, catch and release fish ponds. The site also shows a playground and gaming room.
The park is not well lit at night. If you go out for a walk up to the building during the late night or early morning hours, you'd be advised to carry a flashlight in order to see your path and to operate the shower/restroom doors.
When we first arrived, we were really impressed by our first impressions of the sites and the pool facility. But over time we learned that things were less impressive on the Sunset Ridge property itself, and the lack of the clubhouse was a major missing factor for us to be able to socialize and gather with fellow RV'ers. Maybe having over half of the park filled with full-time residents makes such amenities less important. But as Winter Texans, we felt it was an important omission and something they don't have any plans to resolve any time soon. read more
