When we pulled up to Sunset kayaks, they were more than helpful in loading and unloading. Locked my leg up in the office because I chose to go without. Helped me with my dog and launch. She was also new to salt water. Trip was great ( amputee take note, just wear the leg ). Luna ( my dog ) and I had a great time. Dude was instantly there waiting with leg and a chair on my return. This spot is still open as of 7/14 . Went today and was fairly busy on a Tuesday morning. Super nice weather to kayak today. We rented 3 singles at $18 each.but they also have doubles and triples. They only take check or cash . No card so make sure to take cash with u. During the week is unlimited time so it's nice to that u can take ur time or stop at Seabridge park to rest or use the restroom. They also have a portable restroom that u can use if you need to. Also recommend the burger shack across the street from them cause for sure you'll work up an appetite after all that arm work. This place sucks. I know you'll think I'm being a Karen but hear me out. The day started great, my friend and I walked up and asked if they took card. They didn't and we're nice about and even said I can pay them later in the day and to just come back. I decided to walk on over to 7/11 to get some cash. No big deal. They were nice at first and got us the paddle board and Kayak right away. Now I'm a big girl. Doesn't help that I'm 5'10 either. So we get onto our boards and kayak and start going. This wasn't my first rodeo. About half way from the beach I noticed water was getting in the boat pretty slowly. Before I got into the kayak I noticed that it has a white patch on it by the seat. I didn't think much about it. Water kept coming in and coming in to the point my whole bottom half was underwater. I threw all my stuff onto a random man's deck as my friend grabbed my bag before the whole thing capsized. Now I'm in the middle of the marina with a sunken kayak. I had to swim to this incredibly sweet man who helped me and my friend get back to shore. He tied the kayak to the boat and dropped me off at the shore. He tried to keep the kayak afloat but it kept sinking. I tried to get off at a dock so I can just jump in and swim to shore. The owner at OC paddle boarding began to scream at me and the man in the boat to not touch her dock. She started an argument with my friends and I had to jump in from the boat. Everyone was laughing and talking about it, like nothing happened. When I went up to the worker who was sweet before he basically said there was nothing he could do and that if I wasn't happy I shouldn't come back. What the hell kinda service is that. They sold me a shitty kayak and expected me to be fine with how it capsized and that it wasn't their fault because the patch was above the waterline. When I mentioned the owner, he simply said "he's a grumpy 70 year old man. Don't tell him next time you come because he'll refuse service and tell you you're not welcome anymore" for their faulty kayak? Even the sweet man told me that it had nothing to do with my weight that it was the shirty piece of trash they gave me as a kayak. They did give me mine and my friends money back but I suggest you avoid this place at all costs! read more

I have been coming here for around six years now. The folks who run this place are awesome! It's a great place to rent kayaks and SUP. I have rented both but prefer to bring my dog more recently so a kayak is the best way to go. If you are bringing your pooch please buy them a life vest and be sure to bring a cushion for them if they are smaller. Parking along PCH is tricky so the earlier you come the better. If you have a large group, a reservation is highly suggested since their prices are competitive they book up quickly. During the week days you have unlimited rental time. That's the best perk. You don't pay until you return. Cash or check. You could bring a picnic and stop at one of the numerous beaches and have lunch. There are also many lunch places close by. The views of Huntington Harbor are awesome. It's also very safe in the harbor. The wind is generally less that 5 knots in the am. By noon you can count on a head wind around 10 knots as you are coming back in. It's a great way to get some fresh air and exercise. The boats are well kept and the staff is helpful getting you in and out of your kayak. They have a hose so you can wash off before getting back in your car. There is also a porta-potty inside. This is hands down my go to spot for kayaking. I do wish they opened earlier in the morning. read more

Been here about 4 -6 times, and the Staff is a big reason I enjoy going back. They are all super helpful and chill people. The home views are insanely beautiful. They give you a great steady kayak or paddleboard. And a quick way to understand what you need to do. We did 2hrs for $25 great price! I'm writing a review on behalf of the two people who rented their kayaks from this location and showed up at my dock asking me if I could drive them back. I feel so bad for the experience these two people had. They did not want to get back into the kayak and I do not blame them. One of the kayaks was so water-logged I had a hard time lifting it onto my dock to drain it. I dropped it off the kayaks and explained the situation to the Sunset Rentals. Apparently both boys didn't even get their deposit back! Not cool.. Sunset Kayak Rentals is located off of PCH, with street parking (not a whole lot of street parking, but it is free). This place is located right next to a tattoo parlor. My husband and I came by with our little girl dog last Friday to rent a tandem kayak (2 person kayak) for a fun afternoon of water sport action. We arrived 10 minutes to 11 am (at this time, there was just a few parking spots left on the street) and let one of the guys know that we wanted to rent a kayak (this place also rents paddle boards too). He told us that it will only be $15 per person (CASH ONLY and doesn't matter if we got 2 single kayaks or a tandem kayak) and to bring back the kayak before 5 pm (when they close). We did not need to give a deposit or leave our driver's licence. The guy just wrote our name down to keep track of those who are renting. This price is honestly a very good deal and a better deal than some of the groupon and living social deals that I had seen on line. Anyways, we got into this orange colored tandem kayak and another male employee launched us off (please note that your rental comes with a life jacket and paddle per person. I didn't know how to put on the life jacket, so this employee helped me put it on). Once we hit the water, we kayaked in the Huntington Harbor (but you can always take the kayaks with you somewhere else if you do not want to kayak here, but again, be sure to bring it back before 5 pm). Huntington Harbor is a nice community, consist of rich folks who have a beautiful home off of the water, with their own private decks. It was nice to see all of these gorgeous homes and their yachts as we kayaked (definitely a large area that can keep you busy for a few hours as you explore this harbor). We had such a wonderful time kayaking and would highly recommend renting a kayak or paddle board to anyone looking to check out either water sport for the first time. I do want to mention that if you do bring your dog with you, I highly recommend that your pet have a life jacket. My husband did not think our little girl dog needed one. However, when we were only a few hundred feet from the sand to return our rental (after having our kayak for a few hours), our little girl fell in (my husband moved the kayak, which caused her to loose her balance). I panicked and she panicked.... it wasn't good. But my husband calmly moved our kayak over to her and scooped her up (so she is okay in case you are wondering). Life jackets for dogs are about $20 or less on line and at Petsmart/ Petco in case you need one (remember, safety first...even though dogs can naturally swim, it's better to be prepared). Also there is a porta potty at Sunset Kayak Rentals, but I did not use it (most likely dirty... do yourself a favor and use a restroom at a restaurant before coming... plenty of places along PCH when you drive here). There is also a water hose so you can wash off your sandals and legs if you want to get rid of the sand before trekking back to your car. read more

I wasn't planning on going to the Winter Kayaking UYE hosted by "JT", but then hubby wanted to go so off we went. I'd never kayaked before, never had a desire to do so. So there we were, in a kayak built for 3, lil guy in the middle as we got seated. I got wet immediately and then whined for the next 5 minutes. As we paddled, I realized I was going in the wrong direction -- my bad as I had to learn how to paddle straight. It was kinda cold in the beginning, but soon, the warmth from the sun with the blue skies as backdrop made for a seriously fun time (yes, I admit, it was fun). We stayed on the water for an hour and a half and I got very wet. In fact, my butt was really wet when we docked and got out of the kayak. For $25 (3 person kayak) for an hour and a half was seriously worth it. A great family outing if I do say so myself. read more

A kind, friendly and great area in sunset beach to paddle board and kayak!! $15 will get you a kayak all day in the bay and $20 will get you paddle boarding all day. They have cute little shores on the bay to take breaks and sometimes you can even see fishies. It's safe for all ages and even has a police boat circling the waters. When I cut my foot on some coral, the staff helped me clean my cut and get me back to enjoying my day! They will keep your valuables locked up in a safe box as long as you need them too. Our experience with this rental shop has ruined kayaks for our group forever. None of the workers had masks on and acted in a rather insolent and curt manner. The establishment itself was decrepit and there was little to no organization. Children ran amok without any supervision and most of the people present in the body of water were vile individuals who made sneering remarks and laughed when one of the members of our party was rammed into by a boat, causing her kayak to capsize. Two phones ended up falling into the water as a result of the dolts aboard that vessel, and after two hours of intense search, without any help from the workers who brusquely cast us aside and refused to offer any aid, we managed to retrieve one due to the kindness of four strangers. The service was egregious and the whole event blighted our trip and traumatized us. It showcased human nature's odious character as out of the 20+ who had passed us, half had turned a blind eye, and the other half had gone out of their way to mock us. I hope my lost phone will result in the affliction of all that had crossed us on November 15, 2020. read more

My #1 spot to go for paddleboarding & kayaking. When I go, I usually come with a large group of 10+ people, and they've always been good in coordinating with us to make sure we all have our rentals ready by the time we get there. There's a group discount if you have over a certain amount (I think 10?), and it turns out to be about $12pp for 3 hours. Steal! Admittedly, most of our group was tired in about half that time, so 3 hours is plenty. There's a hose to wash off afterwards. Parking can be a bit difficult to find, but try finding street parking first; and if that fails, there is some parking along the street parallel to the PCH. Pro tip: use the restroom and change prior to going, because their porta-potty is pretty stanky. read more

Wow. I am disgusted. I've genuinely never had a worse experience ever in customer service. He had told me and my friend, (both of us 16 year old girls), that there was no time limit to when we had to bring back the paddle boards we rented. We came back at 5:30 where he greeted us yelling and said that we "can't read time for sh*t" and he kicked the boards and said "get your sh*t off my boards". He was saying that we stayed past our time when he specifically had told us there was no time limit and it was $15 for the WHOLE DAY but he said that we had to have been back by 5:00 as a justification for yelling at me and my friend. He also said that I "did not look very bright" (mind you I'm clearly a teenage girl and he's clearly an adult man) and that we were never welcomed back. (Not a problem from me I'm happy to never give them my money) He took a step towards me making me extremely uncomfortable and I even told him he needs to step back. I definitely recommend going to the place right next door called OC rentals because they were so kind to me and my friend. To summarize, the man named KENNY was extremely rude and unprofessional. I love coming here. I currently live in Colorado and go to LA for business all the time. I usually try to catch the 730am flight from Colorado which gets me into LAX around 1100am. After getting my rental, I head down the 405 until I get to Sunset Beach. I park my rental on the east side of the road and get a single kayak for an hour. Bring friends too. Hint #1: Bring a change of clothing, wear swim trunks, sunglasses, sunscreen and bring a camera (put it in a ziplock bag for protection). Hint #2: You can do a tandem kayak with another friend to save money, however, it seems to take way too much work and isn't as efficient as a single kayak...maybe because my buddy was sitting behind me that one time and was being lazy. read more

I've been here numerous times. $15 for 2 hr rental of SUP or single kayaks on the weekends and $15 for all day rental on weekdays. Street parking. They have a porta potty and rooms if you need to change your clothes. They ask for an ID or some sort of deposit. Pay cash only when you get back. No instruction. Awesome experience with Sunset Kayak Rentals. (I called ahead but never got a reply. No biggie because we live in HB so we just cruised over) We showed up, parked right in front of the place, and they asked us what we wanted to rent. We were there for stand up paddle boards. But u can rent whatever, kayaks or paddle boards. You pay after you're done and it's 18$ all day as long as you're back by 5pm, so get there early for a full day of fun. They provide a box to store your car keys in if you want as well. It's beautiful out in Sunset and way bigger than NB. We will be going again soon and using SKR.. read more

Been coming here on and off for the past three years after discovering this place during a company "team build". At the time I was instantly hooked on kayaking and been dragging whoever I can to this place ever since. Sunset Kayak is a fun inexpensive outing, $12-$25 for 2 hours, depending on size of kayak (single seat, double or triple). They also offer all day rentals which I don't remember how much they were because two hours was enough for me :) Every time I've been there the staff has been fine. They also have free maps of the canals so that you can more easily navigate around (bring a zip lock bag to keep the map dry, trust me). I recommend you get here early (before noon) since it is a popular place for kayaking and as the day goes by the crowds get bigger (more floating targets & obstacles in the water). The Huntington Beach Harbor area here is great to bring people new to kayaking due to its calm waters, usually tranquil surroundings and a great place to see some beautiful multi millon dollar houses. There are also several small beaches which you can stop and take a rest from paddling. *Tip: Watch out for all of the kayakers on your reentry to the Sunset Kayak rental area as many of these kayakers are beginners and are heading out (towards YOU!)...I've had a few close calls, but nothing serious. Also don't be too eager and paddle out too far out. Remember you still need to paddle back! And of course don't take anything with you that you don't want to get wet. read more
