Had a very bad experience here. It was my first time kayaking and I was really excited, but it turned out extremely disappointing. The staff were not helpful at all. They didn't give us any instructions on how to use the kayak, which is especially important for beginners. There was one staff member at the launch area, and when we were trying to get into the water, no one helped us push the kayak. What made it worse was that one staff member inside the shop pointed at us and laughed, and the staff by the shore joined in. It felt very disrespectful and unprofessional. There was a competitor right next door three years ago when I was here called Sunset Kayak, but the building has since become a completely different business. Luckily, OC Paddlesports was and still is around to rent out kayaks, standup paddleboards, and more. Previously I kayaked Huntington Harbor, but this time I went with the SUP. For $25 it came with the board, PFD, and adjustable paddle. As a deposit, you'll leave car keys with them along with your shoes. The waterway is surrounded by private boats, docks, and houses, and along the loop there are small parks and beaches for folks to gather. Fellow kayakers and paddlers have to watch out for fast moving motorboats and their wake. In addition, there were a few bridges that you'll have to travel under by crouching or squatting to get past which wasn't too difficult. My paddleboard was in great condition, and I was able to adjust the length of my paddle as needed in case I wanted to sit down for a breather. After returning to shore, you can wash up with their hose. Highly recommend! read more

First time rider alert! I wanted to leave a review regarding OC Paddlesports. I couldn't have been happier with my experience. Mind you my experience was toward the end of paddle season as mornings were colder (early Oct); I also paddled out on a Friday Morning so the crowds were minimal. Here are some key takeaways: Parking 7/10: This is probably the only downside to PCH in general, but parking is always limited near beaches. However, I was able to find free parking within 20 feet from PC Paddlesports (thank God). During busy season, be prepared to walk about a block to the nearest parking area; no more than 3 minutes walking... but Go early! Check-In 10/10: Well greeting from the owner as he quickly processed my request for a kayak. I'd say no more than 5 minutes tops. Payment and Collateral 8/10: Surprisingly, the rate for the kayak was an all-day $25 charge. This was cheaper than I expected. Some places I searched had a per hour rate of $35+. Respectfully I was asked to leave my keys as collateral which seemed fair. This was probably to deter any theft of his kayaks. I wasn't aware of this, but thankful I brought a dry sack for important belongings. Kayak 10/10: My kayak was great, and the seat was comfortable. The buoyancy was my concern, but it handled well. The kayak also came with room to fasten down belongings. Each kayak has a standard life vest and sturdy double sided paddle. Area 10/10: The Huntington harbor was amazing, and probably the best part of the excursion. There are many waterways to choose from, but remember you have to paddle back. Be sure to have your phone near incase you get lost dreaming.. lol. This is definitely a great place to visit if you're free for a kayak excursion. Summary: 4 stars for great price and equipment; friendly employees but inconsistent service could confuse first-time visitors; still highly recommend this place for paddle board and kayak rentals *** HOW IT WORKS We booked reservations over the phone without issue. You can walk in, but you might have to wait depending on how busy they are. Summer rates were $20 per person for 3 hours, which was more affordable than other locations from what I've seen. My first visit to OC Paddlesports was with a group of 6 on a Saturday at 1pm last year. We rented a combination of stand up paddle boards (SUP) and double kayaks. My second time was yesterday with a group of 3, all SUP, on a Saturday at 12pm. All of the equipment (SUP, kayaks, vests, oars/paddles) were clean and well maintained. Note that the SUP do not come with ankle straps, but we did not have issues with retrieving the board. Parking was free across the street in the areas behind businesses and beach homes. It seemed much easier to find an open spot at 12pm (circled for 5 mins) than at 1pm (circled 20 mins), but we also parked father on the 7th St block. The shop is closer to 11th St. There should also be paid beach parking on 2nd St, about half a mile away. For your personal belongings, you get one locker per group. Transfer your group's essentials (towels, change of clothes, sunblock, water, payment method) into one of your backpacks. Do not leave without verbally confirming your locker number! You need to remember it upon return. Since there is only 1 restroom for customers, I recommend arriving in your swimsuit and desired outerwear (the water temp averages 62F - 72F). Physical waivers will be available at the counter when you check in and pay. If you print and prefill your own waiver, do not sign until you arrive. The employee must witness your signature in person. Shoes go on black racks to the left of the storefront before you head over to the water. Employees help you board the equipment on the water and push you out. They can provide some tips if requested, but first-timers should educate themselves on sports basics beforehand. SERVICE Due to the extremely chill beach town vibes, service was inconsistent between visits. On my first visit, all guests were fitted with life vests before they were directed to the shore. This step did not seem optional. Yesterday, I was getting on the SUP before it occurred to me to request a life vest. My bf actually wanted one too, but didn't ask the employee. He put on the small vest tied to the SUP. Everything worked out. I was just surprised by this relaxed attitude regarding safety in comparison to other rental shops. When we returned, there was no one on the shore receiving the equipment. We "parked" on the sand, laid down our paddles, and looked around for assistance. This was simply resolved with eye contact and a hand wave. In contrast, we received more guidance on my first visit. Employees called us over more systematically from the docking of equipment to hosing the sand off our legs. LOCATION I like that the watersport activities take place on residential canals. You get to admire beautiful waterfront houses lined with uniquely designed boats. Despite being green and murky, the water does not smell. According to my friend who capsized and got a mouthful of it, it's salty. In terms of wildlife, I've seen seagulls, a pelican, and a flying fish. Since the canals were essentially neighborhood "streets", the water and atmosphere were calm. Still, be careful of your surroundings. You're sharing the "road" with other people and yachts of all sizes. The boats leave choppy waves in their wake. For a light to moderate active person, 2 hours is a tiring core workout. It's good to pay attention to your energy reserves as the hours pass. The starting point at OC Paddlesports flows with the current, so you're pushing against it on your way back. On my first visit, the current from 3-4pm easily carried me away when I stopped paddling. I was also using the wrong side of the paddle... my arms felt like they were falling off LOL. read more

Visited for the first time this past holiday weekend. Very impressed with the friendly service and new equipment. Car keys were held for collateral so it's nice not to worry about getting them wet. We came to rent SUPs. I love that the equipment is new and kept clean. The service was prompt and friendly. There was an indoor bathroom for use, a place to store your shoes, and in case you forgot drinks or supplies they sell these as well. When I got to the water, I was helped by a young gentleman to get up on my board. He asked me if I needed pointers or any other help. The rental fees for 3 hours are decent. I do miss having unlimited time since it's fun to catch brunch locally. They also take credit cards. When you get out of the water, they help you wash the sand off your feet. Dog friendly too. Win-win. Glad to see they made the effort to have a beautiful storefront, nice equipment, and excellent service to match. read more

Had the whole family out paddle boarding and kayaking to celebrate my son and niece's birthday. It was a GREAT time making super fun and AMAZING memories. I have to give a special thanks to OC Paddlesports for their GREAT customer service, equipment, rental rates and paddle board tutorial. I called to make a reservation and ended up calling twice more to adjust my reservation, adding a total of 10 in my group. Each time I called it was no worries. Once I called because I have a tall big guy that I wanted to add to my reservation. He was concerned that there was a weight limit for kayaking and OC Paddlesports was great to hook us up with "Big Red" and it was perfect!! And..... there were several people in my group, including a 10 year old, that had never paddle boarded. They received a tutorial that was easy to understand and got on their way to a fun time on the water. I've rented from OC Paddlesports a few times and I would definitely, and have already, recommend them. And... this location is perfect for 1st time paddle boarders. The water is calm and minimal boat traffic to navigate around (WAY better than Newport, just saying.... ). Went on a weekend and it was $20 cash for 3 hours. The ladies and one gent were helpful and friendly. The equipment is new. The kayaks were lightweight which means easy to maneuver and that's comparing them to the old, heavy, and beat up kayaks I usually rent out of Long Beach. No need to grab a life vest from the rack at check in as the kayaks are equipped with new orange ones. This area to kayak around was a nice change of scenery for me as mentioned I'm usually kayaking around the Naples area of LB. We stopped over at Seabridge Park to use the restroom. There's designated areas to leave your kayaks on the very right and very left of the beach there. It may take some effort to find street parking in the area on a weekend. Great little local spot! Parked quickly in front of OC Paddlesports on an August Monday morning at 11am. We rented 3 SUPs and were greeted immediately by two gentlemen! OC Paddlesports has everything you need to get you started, I was even able to buy a wet pack for my phone. I suggest just bringing a water bottle and hat. They provide an area for you to place your belongings if you don't want to leave them in your car. They hold your keys and/or CC as well -- im sure more for collateral purposes -- but it worked out great for me. There was even a hose to rinse off our sandy feet, lol, although im pretty sure I used it without asking:) The young man that helped get us situated into the water was informative and attentive...it was like having my own son out there with me! All went smoothly and my daughters and I had a great time exploring the MANY nooks that Sunset had to offer. We rented 2 double kayaks on a weekday. The price is reasonable and we could rent for all day and come back if we wanted to. Credit card accepted. We Kayaked in a safe canal waterway neighborhood for about 1.5hr . Since we were with kids, the 1.5hr was enough for us, but for those with more stamina, you can return after a meal break and continue to kayak.
