Beautiful beach to take in the sunset - very picturesque with sailboats and kayaks in the bay and mountains across the way. Plenty of logs and benches to sit on. I think almost anywhere downtown you walk back from here requires a steep uphill - we ended up doing the steps near the bridge and got most of it over in 3.5 flights. read more

This beach is less congested than English Bay. I had no idea that this beach is by itself. It's great for BBQ and or just to come here to relax. I am guessing people don't know about this beach too much. When I think about visiting the beach downtown, the first thing comes to mind is English Bay. Surrounding this beach are mostly residential buildings. Best part here is that there are plenty of parking spots. Cheap parking spots too. The only downfall between Sunset and English Bay is that this beach gets less love and attention. Yes the grass is kind of ugly and the sand is not as nice as English Bay. Other than that, why deal with the crowds! read more

Duck yeah this beach is amazing. One of the best kept secrets for sure. Let the tourists go to English Bay. Sunset beach is a lot more low key and chill. For now. The sunsets are amazing. The bike path is amazing. The doggos that play in the grass are wonderful. The guy who flies RC airplnes everyday is pretty cool. The dude that feeds the crows in the morning is rad. Nice place to hang out and watch the sunset. Beach had a lot of random wood scattered around, a hearty smell of marijuana and the beach had a lot of shell pieces. Still a really cool place. Mostly locals, families and other groups of people. Definitely worth a visit! And if you park, make sure you pay. I didn't know I was supposed to pay and got a $40 ticket. read more

Sunset beach doesn't have the fine sand like in Southern California, but it has wonderful qualities. There is a large walking path you could follow and a bike path as well. I went during a weekday afternoon and there were plenty of people walking their dogs or exercising. There definitely weren't any people in their bathing suits or trying to get a tan. What you do get is a beautiful view of a bridge and the water. There's a bunch of logs on the sand if you want to sit and watch the water and plenty of grassy areas for picnics and whatever you want to do. It would be a dream to live across the street and have Sunset Beach as your view. Note: I saw some policemen waving people down catching them with their radar guns, so watch your speed driving through the area. read more

I've lived here in Vancouver now over 6 months and have walked the seawall from South False Creek all around the perimeter of Stanley Park and back at least 100 times. So I now, finally, feel confident writing about the four beaches that spot the west side of the city proper. And it's so interesting how they each are so distinctively different, despite all being on the west side, in close geographical proximity to each other, along the same body of water and along the same seawall. I'll start with Sunset Beach. This beach is the first one you'll encounter, walking northwards toward Stanley Park from Yaletown, as you pass under the Burrard Bridge. There is a ferry stop for the False Creek Ferry right here, and the cutest concession stand (the sign says it's the "Sunset Beach Cafe", but it's really a concession stand!). I must say, this beach has the best well-kept washrooms of them all (and the warmest, in winter months too. I notice these things!). There's also an adjacent parking lot and rolling fields between the seawall path and the street (this is where many city festivals are held, like the Gay Pride festival). This beach is most reminiscent of one in Southern California (to me, at least) due to the planted palm trees here and laid-back vibe. There's a large metal sculpture that resembles huge brontesaurus ribs, and in the summertime, I often see people lounging on hammocks strung on this sculpture, or male models posing for photos here. What steals the show here, of course, is the water, and the view, and the sandy shore where families play and couples walk, hand in hand, and those of need of some respite just rest and meditate on the many benches, or sit on the rocks or logs and watch the passing boats. I often see, in the wee hours of the summer mornings, a lone guitarist strumming away as he sits on a large rock by water's edge, and people writing and drawing in journals as the sun sets. There is an on-site open-air shower here on the beach, if you need to wash the sand off. The Vancouver Aquatic Center is just a few steps away, FYI. This is a glorious beach, with grassy fields for picnicking and right along the seawall path (walking and biking) for easy access to Stanley Park or Yaletown. The next beach further north on the seawall is English Beach. It is only a 10-15 minute walk away. read more

This is a much better beach than many people give it credit for. It is also less crowded. And the name is very fitting as watching the sun set over the horizon here is breathtaking. With plenty of green space as the backdrop to the beach this is a recreational paradise. Also the fact that it is not crowded. That is actually why I am giving it 5 stars. There are life guards on duty and the concession stand is not that bad. But for the views, the space, the public art and the concession stand this is a wonderful place to be. If I remember correctly I think this place even has a big pit to throw your charcoal ashes if you are BBQ'ing here. read more

What a great beach! It's clean and lots of parking around. The sea wall is right there and lots of active people riding bikes, roller blading, and jogging. Plenty of room to sun tan on the beach or hang out in the grass to suntan or activities like working out or frisbee. Along with that you can play volley ball all day in the sun. Based on the name, we opted to check this place out around sunset. It was about 6 blocks from our hotel, mostly downhill. There was a lot of activity on a Wednesday evening. A walking / bike path runs along the edge of the beach, providing easy access from various other parts of town. There were a lot of people taking advantage of decent weather to picnic, play in the sand, exercise, or just take photos. We wandered about 1/3 of a mile along the shore and enjoyed the views. There were numerous large ships further out, and some kayaks and paddle-boards close to shore. Since we walked, I can't comment about parking. You may be able to street-park in the adjacent neighborhoods, but that's purely a guess. This is a great place to unwind after dinner at the end of a day in Vancouver. read more

Truly enjoyed seeing the sunset at this beach but the people there make it unpleasant. People playing their loud music, smoking their weed, cigarettes and drinking their beer right in your face. I see nature as a place to relax and unwind from the world. Isnt clubs, bars and weed shops were you do those things. Leave nature and its beauty alone. read more

Ah, lay back, let the wind whip through your hair, smell the salty air, dip your toes in the ocean...ah Mexico. What I really mean is -- don't judge me. I only dunked myself up to my shoulders in False Creek water because it's so close to my house and it's so dang hot outside! Rules of Sunset Beach: Always, always wear footwear or have the broken-glass-wrath come down upon you. Those who cast the first cigarette butt and the millions who followed shall have the Karma police on you...eventually. Watch out for these people and give them the evil eye as you pass by. In a canoe, a kayak or a water vehicle of any kind- take note: do not cross into the buoyed area. The lifeguard will have your hide. Make use of the showers over by the concession stand. Wash the sand, dirt, cigarettes and the urban water off of you. (Even if there are "bros" doing chin ups on the shower bar...soldier on!) And above all else, if you are so inclined or just so dizzy from the heat that you need to enter the water DON'T LOOK DOWN. Whatever you do DON'T LOOK DOWN. This is not Mexico! read more

This is where the people who actually LIVE in the West End hang out. English Bay is for people watching and tourists, second beach is where the kiddy pool is - so there's lots of screaming children, third beach is the sexy beach where all the youngins ride their bikes and smoke and drink (also very good for people watching, or if you want some hunky stud to rub lotion on you, this is probably where you want to go, better make sure he's single first!) and sunset beach is for the lazy folk like me. There's usually families in this part of the beach as well as dudes playing frisbee or badminton, since there's lots of grassy areas and its not super crazy crowded like english bay. You may or may not find me drinking on the beach and playing frisbee with friends, or just doing log-rolls down the hill, or even doing silly photoshoots by the water. A 1.5 star rating on Sunset Beach... no way! A 1.5 star beach should be for something in Jersey with needles washing ashore or a beach right next to a coal fired power plant on Lake Erie where you can taste the fumes. I'd even be willing to stack up Sunset Beach against beaches much further south. Different of course, but still solid. It is worth the trip to head down to third beach if you are looking for something less urban and more pristine, otherwise enjoy! read more

Enough space you won't be lying on a towel trying to tab with someone lurking over you. Nice little concession stand is open in the summertime in the case you feel like having some French fries, a hot dog or forgot to pack water with you. There's a cement hockey rink nearby if you're into that sport....pretty great space to practice long boarding though. Parking lot adjacent to the beach if you feel like having one of those tail-gate parties and sit in launch chairs. There's quite a lot of grassy space to chill at also. And in the case you have a big roll of poly kicking around, there's a pretty great little hill you could potentially fashion a massive slip and slide to go down. The sea wall runs right past if you feel like stopping by and saying hi, although I am rarely at the homestead except for when I am sleeping. Haha. read more

The beach was beautiful. A lot of people just sat on the sand, looking over the water. Some were reading a book. The louder area was by the only restaurant on the beach, with groups of people dining out on the patio. There's a large inuksuk statue, which simply was just a perfect way to distinguish itself and remind us we're in Canada. Like most beaches you go to, you find a place to sit for hours and daydream. This is my local beach and I love it so much, less popular than English bay but just as much of a great place to spend a sunny afternoon

One area of the beach is a designated off-leash dog park. I always take my dog here to play with other dogs. The dogs can go swimming as well. I have noticed some people come to Sunset Beach to watch the dogs even if they are not presently dog owners. There can be some garbage on the beach. Dog owners should be aware of weird objects around including wine bottles and feminine hygiene products washed up ashore. This is a great place to watch the sunset as well! read more

Yes, it's sometimes dirty, but not always! I don't have a problem with cigarettes or other filth...maybe it's because I sit on a log or bring a blanket/towel, and not directly on the sand. But people, there are cigs on every beach in Vancouver! Anyways if you come to watch the sunset, and stay until dusk, or after...there aren't many, if any people here. If you're looking to enjoy the scenery, and don't want to be in congested English Bay...walk a little further south and enjoy Sunset Beach. read more

It's not the prettiest strip of the beach, however, it is not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. It is average in size and due to lack of scenary, however, what it does rock in is privacy. As mentioned before, wear footwear....this isn't the strip where it is comfortable to run your toes into the sand. read more
