For my son's birthday we decided to ordered some mini sandwiches and placed an order at Sunset Bakery. Located off 72 streets and 87 Ave you will find this family run bakery. They have all the classic Cuban pastries and sandwiches so we ordered the Cuban sandwich and the pork sandwich platter. Both sandwiches were very tasty, pork or pan con lechon as we say in Spanish was tender and bursting with flavor. I've been coming to Sunset Bakery for years, through multiple owners, and today was the first time I ever walked out without buying anything. The reason? A pizza pastel that has been around $3.25 for as long as I can remember is now suddenly $6.00. When I politely asked when the price changed, I was told "today." I was then told it was a completely different product. It's not. I've been eating the same pizza pastel here for years. What disappointed me even more than the price increase was the attitude. Customers aren't stupid, and longtime customers especially know the difference between a new product and the same product with a dramatically higher price tag. I'm a little in shock that someone can be so rude. I do understand that costs go up and businesses need to make money. What I don't understand is nearly doubling the price overnight and then acting rude and condescending. To begin, I have come here many times and every time I come you don't know if these employees will be in a good mood or not. Just one of thise places where you dread coming back and dealing with them. Most of the time these women are on edge and just treat you like a number in the line and you need to move it along. I understand that it is a busy place and they get stressed but it is every time. Recently, I simply walked in and asked about a pick up Uber order that the app said was ready and I was greeted by "well you need to wait, you're ordering a chicken breast at 8am". No problem, but you can keep the attitude. And I apologize I need to order lunch in the morning before work. Very unfortunate that this place has so much potential and has these kinds of employees. I usually come here for pastelitos and coffee which are pretty good...today I decided to grab a "completa" or a full plate. I ordered the masitas with rice, beans, and maduros. It was almost 11 so every was just put out. I took it with me and when I got home I tried the masitas. They were reheated from the day before. There is no way those masitas were fresh. They were reheated and pushed as fresh. If you're going to do that have a side of mojo and onions and add some at least to try to hide the fact that they weren't fresh. Thanks but no thanks. Meh, just okay. The completion is Miami is serious. There's a bakery in every little corner. I wasn't too impressed with this location. The empanadas and pasteles lacked a lot of the Spanish flavor that is usually present in these appetizers. The establishment it's self was super clean, and very modern. I didn't get to try any of the hearty meals during my time here but it smelled and looked delicious. When in Miami.. My wife walked into the empty bakery in the afternoon and the two employees were talking to each other across and over the counter/displays. Waited until they finished and asked one if they had guava pastries and she rudely turned around and said "no", then turned back around facing my back and continued cleaning the counters towards the wall. Unbelievable. We just happened in with my husband's grandparents for a bite between doctor's appointments in the area and this was one of our favorite stops this trip so far. The staff were incredibly patient and gracious with our party. Our grandparents are new to Cuban food and staff were very helpful answering questions and helping us all order. Reviews saying Spanish-language-only are outdated, the place was easily bilingual. The food and coffee were superb. My husband said he'd happily pay twice as much for the cubano sandwich (and he's been eating them all over the city all week). The empenadas got rave reviews and even the rice and beans were delicious. I rarely order cafeteria-style / from "by the pound" cases, and everything looked incredible. I had the all-day breakfast plate and it was delicious. The Cuban coffee was also the best we've had so far this trip. So grateful to find this gem of a spot. Some of the older reviews are outdated - the current owners took over in the Fall of 2017 and based on our visit have done an awesome job with the place. This was our usual place for years, until I had the most awful experience with one of the ladies from the back that cooks. Never have I been talked to so condescending and disrespectful, not to mention how she shouted in front of a very packed bakery. It saddens me that such a good bakery has such low quality of personnel. Furthermore, the entire staff has covered for this cook lady and refused to provide her name. This place is great. It is located at Sunset Corners area (87 Ave and SW 72 St. AKA Galloway & Sunset Drive) I've been going here for as long as it has been opened. I understand they have other locations but this is the one I frequent. The staff is great. The place is clean and they are constantly cleaning. The food is Tip Top. The ham Croquetas de la Casa were pale inside, a few miniature specs of ham could be seen in the filling. Didn't even taste like ham. Thought maybe they gave me chicken by mistake. Pastelitos were pretty good but I've tasted better. The Cuban Crackers were the only item which were very good. Thin, crispy, fresh tasting and not rancid smelling. For those believers, I respect your opinions but I must pass. Gave them 3 stars as their lunch combos looked very good but I didn't try them. Excellent local Cuban bakery and pastry shop (panadería/dulcería). Also on weekdays, they offer cafeteria style food by-the-pound (comida por libra). Delicious, classic Cuban pastries, sweets, and fresh-baked bread. Coffee that kicks Starbucks in the grounds for a fraction of the price. Things to try: the guava half-moons (medialuna de guayaba) are a sublime hybrid of pastry and cookie. The ham croquettes are particularly good as are the "little ham crabs" (cangrejitos de jamón). That's a reference to their shape--they contain ground up ham but no crab, in a multilayered glazed puff pastry. For the sweets, their sugar cookies are particularly good as well as their anisette swirl cookies with maraschino cherry. The place is very convenient to get in and out of. With so many places now popping up where you have to park blocks away or in some sort of controlled lot, this plaza is a pleasure. Plenty of ample parking. And even where there are four or five people in line, they move you in and out quick. The staff are stellar. They remember you, have all worked there for years, are highly efficient, and are really appreciative of what you put in their tip jar. I came here to get Cuban bread for my son after he was discharged with strict orders to stay on a bread and rice diet until a medical follow up. He specifically asked for Cuban toast, so I compromised and agreed to toast with no butter. I asked the person at the counter for a tostada with no butter. She grabbed a premade buttered toast and threw it on the press. I explained that I needed it without butter and she very rudely and loudly snapped back that it has very little butter - if anyone has ever had Cuban toast you understand they are loaded with butter, and these were premade. I started to explain that my son has a stomach condition and is on orders to eat bland bread and rice and can't have any grease when a second employee started yelling very embarrassingly from the other side of the counter that it barely has any butter and why would I even order without butter. I stayed very calm and never raised my voice or even acted annoyed, which i certainly felt, and I can't understand an employee yelling at a calm customer trying to explain that their son is sick and can't have butter. I ultimately asked her if I could just buy a bag of Cuban dinner rolls instead because I was humiliated and my kids were so anxious at this entire exchange. When I got in the car my young son was so anxious with the entire interaction that he wouldn't eat the roll, although he was starving, because he was scared it had butter on it. read more

They have small trays ready to go, but if you need more than 3 trays or for party size I suggest you order them, since they sell them fast. They finally opened their doors back up about 2 months ago and I am SO happy to be able to order takeout again. This was a to go spot for lunch as my office is down the street. The pricing is great, and the food is always fresh. The only thing that can be a bit frustrating is that they tend to run out of food early in the day so if I try to go for a late lunch I won't always be able to get what I want. read more

I place the pickup order the day before (special 1) good price too. $27.95 for croquettes, guava and cheese pastries as well as the bocaditos 25 count of each. While waiting for them to bring my order out I order a coffee. My oh my how I loveeeee Cuban coffee. The joint is not big but I love that you can sit at the counter to eat or take singing to go. As a resident of Miami for 20+ years, my Spanish has not gotten any better. With that said I utilized my limited Spanish vocabulary, gestures, and pointing to get some good food. ::Pats self on the back:: I basically used three words, "para llevar" and "si" during the ordering process. The lady helping me replied in rapid Spanish, i understood nothing, and my only reaction was to stare blankly back at her, while starting to nervously sweat. Despite the language barrier, I was able to order Pan Con Bistec ($5.75) and Pan Con Lechon ($5.50). The prices are comparable with other restaurants, and both tasted good. Both were pretty large portions and filling. What makes this place 5 stars is the tasty affordable treats. Shortorder's list inspired me to try #38, cheesecake flan at Sunset Bakery and is was soooo good. The cheesecake and flan married well creating a wonderful texture that melts in your mouth. It was creamy but wasn't overly rich, which surprised me. It wasn't overly sweet like many cheesecakes or flan I've eaten, which was good and bad. Good because I could eat more of it, bad because I could eat more of it. I also had the senoritas, custard filled flaky pastry with powdered sugar goodness. Both desserts are $1.50, Yes that is the price, its a sugar rush high waiting to happen. On a side note, I bought a pedal stopper for my car, which is a small white rubber stopper the size of a marble, and it cost more than the desserts i bought combined. The stopper was $3.50. The portions aren't small either. I wish I took a picture of their dessert display window because there were varieties of other delicious treat, like tiramisu, chocolate cake, and i think i saw a cannoli. This is another gem in a shopping plaza filled with other gems, Sushi Bar & Jamaican Kitchen. Sunset bakery is also a cafeteria serving Cuban food. In a city where there's a Cuban bakery every other block, Sunset Bakery stands out. I've been going here since I was in high school and it stays good! The bakery even changed hands a couple years ago (which I was worried about) but the food has remained consistent. This is always my go to. Their party trays are good prices and sizes, I always order from them. The ladies here are super helpful and always sweet. They make the best cafe con leche. I LOVE this place! read more

Only when my daughter has a class in the plaza) I always tip at least $1 or $2 just for coffee but not this time. I only tipped $.65 and I don't think I will be coming back here.
