Let me just get this out of the way: As a native Southerner, Sunrise Bistro did a fine job of getting everything right most restaurants do not. The DIY coffee bar? Genius idea with the aroma of fresh brewed coffee immediately upon entering. The staff weren't just friendly, they were almost TOO friendly first thing in the morning. The "feel" of the restaurant was very clean, despite clearly being a locals favorite and packed. But the food? Cooked to order, yes, but without delay and absolutely marvelous. Y'all, they have REAL gravy and not the "just add water" nasty mess too many other places serve. My country fried steak was true to its name and the eggs were great. But the grits? Those are the best I've had in any restaurant in years. Breakfast for two set us back right at $30 and when back in the area, I will return. Here's the kicker: The dark roast coffee I found to be only slightly above average diner coffee. We had breakfast here this morning. Since they live here, they come a lot but this was my first timing eating breakfast here. Cute place conveniently located. They had a variety of flavored coffee so I opted for the Charleston Praline and it was so yummy. The waitress was friendly and helpful. I ate the French toast with bacon, he had the waffles and breakfast burrito and she ate the tomato melt on a bagel. The food was so full of flavor and filling. Love this place for breakfast! A Johns Island staple, expect a wait if you arrive on the weekend anytime before 12. I usually order staples like the Hungry Howie - eggs, bacon, grits, French toast. Always done well. I really enjoy the self serve coffee bar - all you can drink. I like the layout inside, many tabletops but not jammed together. Quite a relaxed environment, people do tend to start conversations with each other. One thing that bugs me, I notice the taste of the grits changes every time I order it. I went diner style for my brunch with a Benedict. A country fried steak Benedict sitting atop a homemade waffle which covered collard greens and smothered in a gravy and two eggs over medium. It has bed areas 4 years since we have visited! Portion size is smaller and prices are a little higher! This place is best deal on the isle! I had the chicken fried steak benne! A great little "locals" bistro offering comfort food. Sunrise Bistro is a good meal stop on your way to "the islands" and/or Wadmalaw Island/Rockville ~ as the cafe serves breakfast all day and lunch daily. The service is swift and attentive and the staff is always in constant motion making sure everyone is happy. Portions are large so you will leave very satisfied and happy! This morning I ordered the yogurt parfait - "deconstructed" with an additional bowl of fruit. The melba sauce that accompanies the yogurt parfait is delicious - rich texture and tart and not too sweet. ....and is a nice added touch. You can't go wrong with the open-face omelets ~ and many choices ~ which was the additional dish at our table. The self serve coffee bar is a great feature here. The coffee carafes are continuously replaced when empty so the three selections of coffee are guaranteed to be fresh and hot. There is plenty of parking in front of the restaurant. 4.5 stars From the outside it doesn't have much curb appeal. Inside was a very cleam with diner style deco, plain and simple. That's where the mundane stops. The service was impeccable. The young ladies who work and seem to run the place are top-notch. Extremely friendly and polite, our server was at our table every few minutes making sure we were doing good. I'm sure people go back just to see her. She was awesome (wish I got her name but I will next time) The food selection is excellent and prices are very reasonable. With all the great breakfast spots, please avoid this one. My utensils were filthy, the food was super greasy and came out 20 minutes later than a couple who sat down and ordered after us. The only good thing that I could say about my experience was the bill was cheap. With cheap comes a certain caliber of people. Stopped by on Sunday afternoon for brunch. This place was full, but we were able to get a table quickly. Charming, laid- back vibe. Families, friends, couples...everyone was here. Sunrise Bistro is a lovely brunch spot on Johns Island. There are so many breakfast options that come with the addition of seafood - what more could you ask for? At my last visit, I tried the crab omelette and the crab Benedict. Both were a great lighter brunch option - sometimes a seafood brunch can sit heavy in the stomach but the amount of veggies in both made it feel quite light and made a comfortable fullness in the belly instead of a overstuffed feeling. Sunrise Bistro also has a great coffee station where you can grab your own coffee. I'm not sure how they've handled this during covid, but pre-covid it was a great touch. Don't pass by this little gem of a restaurant because it's in a 'strip mall' because it was a super place to eat! If you're from out of town, it's very close to the Angel Oak tree. We had both breakfast and lunch items off the menu and neither disappointed. I'm a bit of a French Fry Snob, and these babies were perfectly seasoned and crispy. It started off as serve-yourself coffee which was actually really good. Unexpected from a hole in the wall diner! I had a biscuit just to try -- big, fluffy, delicious and couldn't finish. It had the crusty, salty top and the soft, dense interior. I had a breakfast burrito because I couldn't make up my mind. Chorizo was a surprise option that I'm glad I went with. Really good. Along with that, I had the grits which were also really good. You wouldn't have expected it, but they carried this hot sauce made from some local which raised the flavor profile even more. Wasn't loving the menu so I ordered the French toast. It was absolutely tasteless. No yummy smell, no flavor. The syrup was as runny as water and had no flavor either. Had the other person taste it and he agreed, no flavor. I will give them credit for serving with butter, not the fake stuff. He had chicken fried steak and it was good. Eggs were cooked fine. Grits were tasteless. Toast was plain, not buttered, no butter or jam offered. They have a coffee bar set up nicely with several flavors of coffee, half and half, milk, etc. Of course, that means get up and get your own coffee too. I found the place pretty tacky. Was always the best place to go for good breakfast but I just went and got a big surprise an $11 dollar breakfast cost me $15.99 with up charge for eggs and instead 3 slices of bacon you get2 and instead 2 sausage patties you only get one. Sunrise Bistro is the classic type of spot you'd wander into and immediately feel at home, even if it's your first time, which was exactly the case for me. I went at breakfast time on a Saturday and was able to get a table immediately despite the amount of patrons. All the servers seemed to know the regulars on a first name basis which is such a good sign at a place like this. Speaking of the staff, the servers were incredibly nice without being annoying or fake and very prompt. Coffee is a self serve situation ($3) and you can get as much as you'd like. The menu is a great array of standard diner breakfast and lunch options with a low country twist. Great pieces and serving sizes too. I had the burrito with Tasso ham and a side of potatoes. Incredible, but a little on the spicy side if you're sensitive to that sort of thing. This place is conveniently located next to Angels Oak, which is why we checked it out! The atmosphere is super chill, friendly, and welcoming. They have a full self service coffee bar, which my boyfriend really enjoyed and beelined for when we got inside. I ordered the grits bowl. It was good!
