Karni is the best! Her experience helped support us and gave me confidence I was in the right hands to carry through my home birth without once being worried. At 41 with my first pregnancy, overdue by 10 days, Karni always installed confidence in me, moving away from traditional thoughts of big babies. We discussed plans for not tearing and plans of action for various scenarios. Her team monitored the baby constantly and had various tricks to help me cope. I think if I had gone to the hospital the experience would have been completely different for everyone in the family.

The morning my second daughter was born.

They are kind, knowledgeable, and supportive, but the front office and administrative side has been consistently frustrating. The administrative staff is disorganized and unprofessional. They frequently mix up appointment times, give conflicting information, and make even simple tasks feel unnecessarily difficult. They don't use email or an online portal to send updates, test results, or appointment confirmations, which makes it almost impossible to keep track of anything. Everything has to be done by phone, and the communication is often curt or dismissive. Another major frustration is that any time I need bloodwork, I have to schedule a completely separate appointment with a third-party lab instead of being able to do it in-office. This makes routine prenatal care far more inconvenient than it needs to be. I really wanted to have a good experience here, especially since the clinical care from the midwives has been positive, but the front-office management has caused so much stress and confusion that I'm choosing to switch practices. I hope they improve their administrative processes and communication in the future.

We toured the office and both decided before we even left we wanted Sue to be my midwife. I always felt so cared for each & every visit. I never felt like I was supposed to be doing better than I was, Sue always assured me I'm doing exactly what I need to be doing. Even when some issues arose as they do, Sue was always quick to handle things and again make me feel so cared for and that she was always on my team. My birth didn't even go remotely as planned as the baby had other ideas and once again Sue was there by my side. She was with me through my 17 hour labor, 5 hours of pushing and 2 hour c section. She was in the room when my son met his father for the first time and she was the second person to hold him - she sang him happy birthday . I would not have wanted anyone else to be my care provider, she spoke up to the staff at VCMC & constantly pushed for my birth plan even if at the end it didn't work out that way. But again Sue made me feel that all was ok and exactly how it needed to happen and that I did everything I could have. Sue we love you so much!

She thinks outside of the box, listens and respects your ideas and opinions, makes you feel loved and safe throughout your entire pregnancy and most importantly during your delivery. When COVID happened I knew I did not want to deliver in a hospital and after delivering my 3rd child unmediated but in a hospital I knew a birth center birth was what I wanted. I have been fortunate to labor through my last two pregnancies with Sue and most recently delivered my 5th baby at the birth center. Sue never made me feel like a nuisance even when I text her about a million times with questions throughout my pregnancy. She welcomed my entire family to our prenatal appointments and all my kids loved going because the environment was so warm and family friendly. She connected me with the most amazing specialists when needed and make recommendations based on my needs. She encouraged me on the days I felt terrible and checked in on me and my family even after the birth. My birth was the most amazing and beautiful and redeeming experience thanks to Sue and her staff. If you have ever even slightly considered midwifery care or a birth center birth; Sue is your gal! Myself and my family consider Sue a part of our own family now and we will never be able to thank her enough for all that she has done for us!

During my care, another baby was being born when I had prenatal visit. I'm assuming the same thing happened and she was able to see me the following day. Babies are on their own timelines and you must have grace since she is one person and babies being born wait for no one and I can't imagine she had the time to check her phone while she's trying to catch a baby! Though initially going for a Hospital Birth since I was 43 I was immediately put in the 'High Risk' category and all the shenanigans that come with that. So, at the encouragement of a friend of ours (Natural Birth Instructor) and with my husband fully on board, we decided to take control and started interviewing Birth Centers and Midwives. What attracted us to LA Midwife Collective was that we were getting 2 licensed midwives with years of experience. The moment we met Monica and later Jennifer, we were drawn to their professionalism, knowledge, and comforting approach. They made us feel so comfortable and empowered that we knew were in capable hands for the birth of our daughter. I loved that each visit was not rushed and not just about our baby but me...what was I eating? How was I feeling? Emotionally, physically? Exercises to do and foods to add. When decisions had to be made, they made sure we had all the information needed (pros/cons) so we could make an informed decision. Jennifer & Monica quickly went from strangers to family. The birth of our baby couldn't have gone better. Though Jennifer was off that weekend our doula, Johanna who also was their birth assistant, helped with the delivery of our baby. There were moments during the pushing stage where I started to panic and doubt myself, but Monica was right there saying exactly what I needed to hear. And after the birth as my husband and I were getting acquainted with our daughter Monica was in our kitchen making us something to eat. The care didn't end at the birth when issues came up with breastfeeding Monica was extremely quick to respond to our concerns. We loved the visits made to our home 1 day and 1 week after along with the office visit at week 3 and 6. The level of care we experienced exceeded anything we could have imagined. After this experience I now believe that regardless of one's birth plan every woman should have access to this type midwifery care.

The way this office dealt with something so common for so many women has made me rethink using this office again for any future pregnancies. The front office staff was rude, impatient and used condescending language as I navigated making follow up appointments for my miscarriage. When I finally saw Dr. Pattamakom to discuss my follow-up ultrasound results, it was via a Zoom appointment. She didn't have her camera on, was unaware of what the appointment was for before logging on and hadn't looked at any of my ultrasound results prior to the meeting. It ended with "Yeah, it looks like this was a miscarriage. Were you trying?" I was stunned to say the least. I am naturally a pretty emotionally stable person. However, I was shocked, frustrated and just so disappointed by the lack of empathy, guidance and professionalism I experienced. I assumed that an OB's office would have protocol in place to make the common, confusing and delicate situation that miscarriage is easier and less painful for their patients. This is not the case. On a very positive note, I do have to say that Cedar Wilkening is one of the best care providers I've ever had and is the only reason I am considering seeing this office again in the future.
