Something very unique and rooted in the rich history of Long Beach, and also, free! We went in on a Saturday, parked under a tree, and was able to walk around undisturbed for over an hour. The grounds are in good condition and the place is very safe. The only drawback is that there is no bathroom so go before you arrive or hold it until you leave. Sometimes during Halloween and other holidays they do tours, ghost stories or even live movie events. Historic landmark-- the second oldest burial ground in Long Beach We attempted to visit the cemetery one evening around 8:00p but the gates were locked. We returned the next day in broad daylight around 3:00p. Sunnyside is an old cemetery and has lawn burials only; it does not have mausoleum or columbarium space of any kind. Sunnyside is adjacent to the separate Long Beach Municipal Cemetery. The gate for Municipal Cemetery was actually open that evening we went. Yes, we stopped by. Usually, we search for famous people or husband tells me that the cemetery may be haunted by angry souls whose final resting place did not allow them to "rest in peace." We learned of The Ghostly Bride of Sunnyside Cemetery. A bride was killed on the way to her wedding and was buried in her wedding dress. Her ghost is said to be seen at the cemetery itself wandering the cemetery grounds at night. The bride's name is Bessie McKensie Baxter. We found her gravestone. Now my hubby likes to turn on his Ghost SLS app when visiting cemeteries. I don't know how accurate this app is but there was no activity on the ghost bride but not too far away there generated some activity. A few feet away was the grave marker for a gentleman named William J Kingdon. The app detected stick entity on his grave and is often erratic. This review is for the annual Cemetery Tour, held by the Historical Society of Long Beach on the Saturday on or before Halloween. Research is done, scripts written, actors hired and costumed, each portraying a person with connections to Long Beach, most of whom are buried there. There are also specialist exhibits and books are for sale. It's an enjoyable day, fun and suitable for all ages. read more

Sunnyside is within walking distance from my work, so I spent many lunch breaks walking on the ground, contemplating about the past and my future. This cemetery is truly historic, with most of the graves dating back to the 20's and 30's. I try to imagine the lives of the residents and the historical context. It's unfortunate that the environment is not being maintained due to the lack of funding. The grass is already dead, and the trees are dying one by one too. I guess they'll join the ranks of the ones who are already underground. Maybe I'll join them one day. I have already spent the majority of my life living in Long Beach, and I might as well be interred here. read more

This place has turned into a joke! My sister has been resting here since 1991 and the place looks dead! I talked to one of the guys they and he said they have no water to keep the place up other then doing basic gardening around the area. Such a shame and disrespectful to the people. I enjoy going here. Sounds morbid but I find in interesting to see the headstones of the founders of Long Beach. A lot of civil war vets. Some of the headstones are beautifully carved. read more

Sunny side cemetery no longer has plots there from my understanding but great grandparents and great great grandparents are buried there and the 80's horror movie Phantasm was filmed there. If you're a weirdo and love walking around old cemeteries this is the oldest one in Long Beach with lots of history. read more

Always admired this Cemetery, its a historical landmark and quite "Edgar Allan Poe-ish" lol. So when I found out that they are showing summer night movies here, you better believe I jumped on that opporunity. Very much well worth it. Watched Hitchcock's Psycho! It was awesome. The night was fresh and it was quite an experience. Going for "The Shining" in September :) Also, come by earlier than the movie start time, you can walk around and gawk at the 100plus year old graves...makes you kind of nostalgic... Tips: Try to car pool if you can; the parking is back to back so you have to be patient in leaving. They have a "food truck from Lola's Mexican cuisine" but you can plan a picnic too, you're even allowed to bring your own alcohol and food of course (with the alcohol done in moderation of course, who needs the drama) and if you bring high back chairs, be considerate of others and sit to the side or back....many bring blankets and pop-a-squat...or even lay out :-) All in all, an A+! read more

I love this cemetery. It's nice to roam around for hours while glancing at the century-old graves surrounding you. Plus, their movie nights are awesome. They've played classic horror films like Halloween, The Shining, The Birds & Psycho. I come here whenever I can because it's very peaceful. read more

I'm so disgusted with the lack of upkeep here. The fact that they don't water the lawn, DESPITE any perceived "rules" is just as good as vandalism; dusty, dirty, trees dying, being uprooted and falling; what is Green Hills, Rose Hills, Pacific View, All Souls, Westminster Memorial, and every OTHER cemetery I've been to in Southern California doing that this place isn't? No, I haven't been obsessed with The Cure, painting my toenails black... lately. You don't need to be a 90's goth burnout to visit this historic Long beach landmark. Did you know this cemetery is the resting place of 200 Union soldiers. Yes, and they're buried on top of 2000 Tongva indians and 2 mestizos. Stick that in your corn pipe All Souls' Cemetery! (the soldiers are legit but the final resting place of my 2002 brown brothers have yet to be confirmed) So get on the blue bus gus and dedicate a sunny saturday to carbon copying some cool masonic headstones. Just don't venture in too late. i've heard sightings of Bela Lugosi in a RobertSmith blouse after dark. read more

You don't have to be goth or morbid to enjoy a beautiful cemetery. This particular cemetery is rich in the history of Long Beach and California. Many of those buried here passed on in the 1800s and early 1900s. However, there are some more recently guests as well, stemming as late as the early 2000s (though these are few and far between). Check out the beautiful statuary on top of many of the tombstones or in honor of entire families, they're gorgeous. Find the small tombstones and you'll see the vulnerability of children to various diseases, with many tombstones showing only one full day of life. If facing the cemetery from Willow St. you want to be sure to go in the main entrance, which is slightly closer to Orange St. than Cherry St. The entrance on the right is always open, but there is very little to see. I know they were trying to do something similar to Cinespia here awhile back, but it doesn't seem to have worked out, unfortunately. The property is recovering from the long period of neglect since its endowment was embezzled in 1994, and again reflects the respect our friends and family deserve. The Sunnyside Cemetery is a wonderful historical location. Yes, it is in disrepair because the annuity set up for it was embezzled. The man was put in jail. There are only two people that work there and paid very little. Because the cemetery is FULL and it's not possible to sell more burial plots, there is no income to maintain it. There are organizations that are trying to bring in money for the cemetery. All proceeds are donated for upkeep and maintenance. There is a small band of volunteers that recognize the need to help maintain it. We will be meeting on Fridays and give it our best. If you care about the cemetery, please come join us and bring a hoe, a shovel, a garden hose, garden gloves and be ready to pitch in. Very cool cemetery. Came upon it by accident one day and had to stop to check it out. There seems to be two sections here, and at the time I visited, the other fenced section was off limits. It is in the middle of what looks like an industrial area, oil derricks are around it but it doesn't take away the antiquity it has. A very old cemetery that probably doesn't (but not sure) sell plots anymore. read more
