You have the choice of attempting to find a place on the street in front of the building in which the doctor is located, or in one of the two parking structures loacted behind the building. The waiting room in the doctor's office is fairly small. Please note that it is always crowded with patients. Accordingly, you may have to stand while you wait to be called by one of the nurses into one of the examination rooms in the back. I noted even at 9:00 a.m., which is their first appointment of the day, and the time I arrived for my second appointment, it remained as crowded as ever. The nerve conduction studies are done in two parts. The first part is performed by an assistant. The accupuncture testing thereafter will be performed by the doctor.

We were shown into a room and met with the physician's assistant (who was lovely and kind by the way). She did preliminary tests and talked with my mother, who suffers from dementia. The doctor finally came in and was incredibly rude. He didn't introduce himself or even say "hello". He didn't really listen to us, just said "I don't know why you are here. She has dementia. it will get worse. There isn't anything to be done." He told my dad to stop giving her an anti-nausea medication, but had no suggestions on how to keep her from being sick. He finally ordered an EEG for her. I made a follow up appointment for her when we were getting the test. When we showed up for the follow-up, there was no record of the appointment on their books (even though I had an appointment card). They made it seem like I was the one who made a mistake. After I booked a new appointment, we went back to get the EEG results, we once again were met by the PA. We asked about the EEG results and she said the doctor was reviewing them. A few minutes later, the door opened, an arm shot into the room with a piece of paper that was thrust at the PA, and the door closed again - the EEG results. The doctor never even came into the room!!!! I could go on about his flip attitude during our initial meeting - "oh, she is falling? She has a vitamin B12 deficiency" - "This isn't even my specialty, I don't know why you are here" "If you are looking to get me to write a letter for Power of Attorney, I can't do that" (not at all why we were there). I have never been around such an uncaring and dismissive physician. I have never had this experience with a Sharp doctor before. I hope to never again.

I recently received a prescription for diabetic foot orthotics (a very common medical device for a place like Hanger), but learned that the entire Hanger chain had lost both of its only two technicians for such orthotics, and could only offer me an appointment for 4.5 months from now (when they apparently hoped that they might have managed to hire someone). The person answering the phones was also incorrect in her assertions about what Medicare covers (for long-term, Type-I diabetics, Medicare pays for one pare of diabetic petitions per year--Don't be cheated). This would leave my recently surgically reconstructed foot without protection during a critical healing period. This place is highly unprofessional and conducts itself with questionable business ethics. I strongly advise against using Hanger in La Mesa for any services.

I'm not sure which was more frustrating: waiting over **2 1/2 hours** past my scheduled appointment to be seen, or scheduling a virtual follow-up to review my MRI only to never receive the call. Instead, I received a voicemail summarizing the MRI findings. MRI results can be complex, and I had questions about what they meant, my diagnosis, and the next steps. That's a conversation that should happen directly with a patient--not through a voicemail. I understand that medical offices can run behind and that physicians have demanding schedules. However, patients' time is valuable too, and timely communication is an important part of quality care. I'm going to write a short book here, because it seems to be the only way to communicate how much I appreciate Dr. Hanson, and why. Over the years, I had met with nearly a dozen orthopaedists, gotten relief from various injections, looked at all manner of edge-therapies, had three conservative surgeries on the knee, lived with the outcomes, and eventually was advised to go ahead and get the replacement. Along the way, I observed the bedside manner of all of these doctors, noting that joint-replacement specialists, like many specialists, are, perhaps because of their training and lofty intellect, not as interested in patient communication as are most GP's. Some of them, I think, interact best with patients who are... unconscious. After doing a good deal of asking around, I was lucky to be referred to Dr. Peter Hanson at Grossmont Orthopaedic. His credentials were unbeatable, and his ratings on Yelp and elsewhere were remarkable. So, I timed my appointment with him to also satisfy my desire for a second opinion. My experience with Dr. Hanson at that appointment was so excellent that, although he truly intended only to offer a second opinion, I was nearly ready to ask him to perform the procedure himself. For a leading medical specialist, Dr. Hanson is astonishingly low-key and patient. Very approachable yes, but it's more than that. He's more like my trusted old friend taking care of me. Anyway, after yet another rushed, slightly contentious session with my other (busy, up-and-coming rockstar) specialist, I had had enough and scheduled my surgery instead with Dr. Hanson in January. On surgery day, he was a comfort both before and after the procedure. Now in my 6th week of recovery, I am delighted that I chose Dr. Hanson to perform my surgery. Although the recovery requires substantial effort, physical therapy, and some pain tolerance, my knee gets better each day. In closing, if you are lucky enough to get Peter Hanson as your joint replacement surgeon, you are in exceptionally fine hands. I cannot recommend him to you highly enough.
